First I'd just like to congratulate you Aussies on the record & the way u destroyed the Windies 5-0,I for one was cheering your blokes on every inch of the way.But can anyone tell me why the most attcking opening batsman in Test cricket & arguably the best is deemed not good enough for the 1 day side?I know Slater's 1 day record isn't great but they haven't given him a go for ages & a player who attacks like he does from the off in Tests must surely have the abilty to be a great 1 day opener.Who is it that has decided that he isn't a 1 day player?

I think he pretty much answered that question today. 19, caught at cover trying to lift Williams. In tests, his approach of blocking or leaving most, belting the odd bad ball, works well with the field up. In one dayers, he tends to hit them in the air to the fielders. His record, by the way, is an average of 24 at a strike rate of sixty.

Slats is a awesome batsmen. However, he normally gets out early in the innings by trying to go over a fieldsman and getting caught. But i hope he can return to the one day team one day.

Tom you said it very succinctly. Shit average, shit strike rate, gets out to stupid shots.
Slater is probably also lucky that Hayden hasn't been the greatest success as a test opener so far, otherwise Slater's test place would be under scrutiny too. Got himself out to some very stupid shots throughout the series vs the West Indies, and ran Hayden out twice as well.
Slater averaged 28 for the calendar year 2000, Hayden averaged 33 and Blewett averaged 13.8 . The only thing keeping Hayden and Slater in their places is that if the selectors sack one of them for being ordinary, they'd have to be consistent and sack both of them! Elliott isn't a viable replacement as yet, having shown scratchy form (one or two knocks aside) since returning from injury, while Hussey is similarly out of sorts, so no-one is really ready to fill the breach. Blewett has been tried over and over again but keeps getting found out against spin and shouldn't be a consideration unless the side is desperate. Next cab off the rank might be David Fitzgerald who has been a solid run-maker for SA for about three years now.

I do like watching Slater bat so I suppose I would call myself a bit of a fan, but he is very lucky to have his test spot, let alone come under consideration for the one-day team.

Because he has trouble 'accumulating' runs at a decent rate.

Also his running between the wickets is woeful.

cheers

Dodongo thinks Slater should stay as a test player. Dodongo doesn't think Slater will be good in the one day team.

I do think Slater still has something to offer the Australian One Day Team. He's an aggressive batter and can score his runs quickly - I think that when Mark Waugh retires, Slater is a big chance to fill in his opening spot.

check Jimmy Maher out guys, his domestic record is great and was not ready last time he represented australia, much better player and brilliant fieldsman, unbelievably and criminally overlooked by selectors for the a squad, also check out haydens record, all u people that think he is a flat track bully well one day wickets are normally flat tracks, he is also a brilliant fieldsman

Stuff Slater - he's blown every chance he's had at one-day level. What about Martyn as an opener when M. Waugh retires? Leaves a middle order spot open for Hodge/Katich etc. Slater simply hasn't got the temperament for the One-Day cricket.

ThankYOU! I reckon Slater is a champion and should be given a go in the ODI's. The nineties are a problem for him but they can only be passed if he get's a go http://www.bigfooty.com/ubb/wink.gif.
