YYYYYYYYYEEEEEEEEEEEEESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!
GOOOOOOOOOOO YOOOOOUUUU PPPIIIIEEEESSSSSS!!
To anyone that wasnt at Woodvile Oval today, I just witnessed the greatest Port Magpies victory of the last 5 years. Deadset pumped up after that I am!!! That was without doubt the sweetest Port Magpies victory ive seen since our last premiership. Absolutely awesome.
We ended up winning by 8 points with a Justin Plapp kick after the siren sealing the win. Geez what a match tho.
Id like to start by saying that that was the most one sided umpiring performance you would ever wish to see. Some of the decisions they paid and didnt pay were baffling. In the last half even Eagles supporters around us were shaking their head every 2 minutes at the one sided affair that was going on. I wont go into detail about all the free kicks the Eagles recieved and the ones Port missed, but Port recieved 4 free kicks in the last 3 quarters compared to about 25 to the Eagles. Tim Pfieffer (hardly a surprise is it) and Peter Williams are absolute jokes.
5 free kicks the Eagles recieved thru goals in the first 3 quarters. Compare this to the fact that Port only got about 6 frees for the entire match
Anyway...enough about the White scum...onto the match.
We were lucky in a way that the rain stayed away for the majority of the match. Looking down South-East the rain looked very threatening. HUUGGEE Black clouds...but thankfully they missed the oval and we only had a 15 minute sun shower like sprinke in the 2nd quarter.
The 5-6 goal breeze going to the Northern end meant that it would be hard to judge how the sides were going until half time.
The Eagles kicked with the breeze in the first term which resulted in a 16 point lead. Passador kicked the opener while Stokes got one a few minutes later from a dubious in teh back call. Port worked reasonably well into the wind and kicked 2 goals. The first, and oppurtunistic snap from about 25 metres out by Hotrod Harry Miller...the second was a goal on the run by Fiegert from about 40 metres out. He had missed a similar shot from almost the same point about 2 minutes earlier.
The second quarter came and the light sprinkling of rain started to fall.
Port looked great in the second quarter, the teamwork was supurb. The Eagles kicked the first goal of the 2nd quarter (from memory) and it looked like they might go on with it, but then came the turning point:
ENTER DARRYL POOLE!!!!!
The big man was simply brilliant in the 2nd quarter. Of Ports 6 goals, Pooley played a direct role in 5 of them, and was robbed of one himself after the White scum decided not to pay him an obvious chest mark in the square. He chased, he bumped, he niggled, he tackled, he had the Scragger Stevan Hall threatening to deck him all quarter...but that was left to the scum Paul Lindsay who clocked Pooley in the face behind the play which started a melee between 6-7 players for the last 4 minutes of the quarter. That little f*cking rodent Justin Sh*tolella also connected with a punch to the face of Poole with the umpire right there, but of course...nothing will come of it. Pooley got his own back by being the main reason Port had turned a 20 point deficit into a 13 point lead at 3/4 time.
The first goal of the quarter came to Richmond-recruit Matthew King who goaled from a mark about 30 metres out. Pooley had chased down an opponent who mis-kicked straight down Kings throat. Then Ricky O'Loughlin snapped a high goal from straight in front after Pooley handballed to him. The third goal another 2 minutes later was by Nigel Fiegert who used the breeze well to guide thru a kick from 60 metres out.
Then Justin Plapp got into the play, and marked and goaled and then recieved a tap on by Pooley for his second in a few minutes. Plapp also played a part in Mcdowalls goal a few minutes from the half time siren.
Port looked fantastic. Pooley had burst into the play. Plapp was getting the ball. Ricky was his dominant self in the middle and Parry was getting on top in the ruck.
The third quarter saw the Eagles use the breeze to their advanage to wrestle back a 7 point lead at 3/4 time. Port kicked two of the first 3 goals of the third quarter thru Matty Sinkunas, who again was one of the best on the ground, and Hotrod Harry, before the Eagles took control.
A goal to the Squealer and two great goals by Matty Stokes lifted the Eagles spirits. The umpire gifted the Eagles the next two goals - to Treeby and i think Skipworth, after the White Scum had somehow missed teh Squealer dragging and throwing Poulton out of the contest twice in two minutes.
The Eagles had the lead at the last change but their were questions of whether it would be enough with Port kicking with the now 3-4 goal breeze in the last term.
Port had most of the play in the last term but struggled to use it to their advantage most of the time. Brett Eberts last half was simply mind blowing, and he kicked the first goal of the last quarter to put the Magpies within a point of the Eagles.
The play then see sawed with the Eagles unable to penetrate half back and the Magpies wasting a few oppurtunities at goal. Dropped chest marks inside 50s and missing easy shots on goal meant put had a 1 point lead halfway thru the quarter.
Then Mcdowall marked 35 metres out dead in front and put the Magpies up by 7 points at the 20 minute mark.
An oppurtunists snap by the Eagles (Skipworth i believe) put the scores back to 1 point.
Port then had control of the play for 95% of the rest of the quarter. Fiegert missed a long kick on goal to put the Pies 2 points up. From that point on the play stayed in Ports attacking 50-60 metres for most of the last 10 minutes. Plapp ended up marking the ball 25 metres out on the boundary line and then the siren went to give Port one of its most inspirational wins ive seen. Plapp kicked almost the impossible goal to really ram it into the Eagles.
A huge win for the Magpies and it means that next weeks match against Norwood will be massive. A win there and Port will be right back in the race for the final 4.
A lot of Port players played great today. Ebert probably played his best game and did some amazing things with the leather, Pooley was great, Sinkunas was great, Fiegert and AhChee were great, Ricky was great (yet again) and first gamer King showed promise.
The Funcke-o-meter was low. He made his customary 4-5 errors but wasnt as bad as past games.
Player Reviews:
Poole - a fantastic captains game from the big fella. Hes lost about 17 kilos since he last played, gained a yard of pace and was inspirational in the 2nd quarter gifting out 5 goals to teammates. Got punched in the face twice by Eagles scum but it didnt fuss him. Welcome back big fella!!!
Plapp - Came into the game in the 2nd quarter with 2 goals and dishing out another to Buzz. Provided a contest always, and kicked the sealer after the siren. Has really started to settle in here now.
Funcke - was poor, but at least he wasnt useless. A fair few of his kicks actually reached teammates today for the first time this year. He did cost Port 2 goals thru errors however.
Lyle - Started off well, and did a lot of the hard stuff. Found space on quite a few occasions and vital times.
Ebert - magnificent game. His last half pretty much won us the game. He had a heap of the ball, did some things that you could only marvel at, and found a lot of space at vital times in the last quarter. I dont think he had an opponent in the last quarter.
Poulton - Played on the squealer and probably broke even. Burton kicked two goals, and luckily gave out another 2 in the third quarter after throwing Poulton out of the contest twice. Last time i checked you cant grab hold of a player from behind, and throw him out the way. Poulton rebounded well for most of the game.
Clayton - Played a better game than last time i saw him. Generally won a fair bit of the ball and used it quite well.
Fiegert - one of the best players on teh ground. Kicked 2 goals and played well across half forward, and then down back.
Evans - Once again, Evans was hardly sighted today.
King - Looked impressive. Definately has some raw talent. Played in the backlines and did some good things to win the ball. He also kicked a goal in the 2nd quarter.
Mcdowall - wasnt happy with his game today, despite two goals. He tried to break thru too many tackles too many times and it was annoying to watch. Wasnt given much space but just boot the thing instead of trying to break clear all the time.
Ilett - Started off well but didnt see much of him in the last half. Played on Stokes who hurt us a bit.
Sinkunas - another impressive performance by the 19 year old. Kicked a goal, and laid a number of nice tackles. Probably in our best 5-6 players on the ground.
Beinke - was next to useless today. Everytime he went near the ball he dropped it. Dropped about 10 chest marks today.
Peucker - back to the reserves mate. Useless. Deadset horrid today. Seems to be hit and miss this year with him. He won ONE marking contest out of about 30 against 4 different opponents. Was led to the ball everytime.
Wilson - spent most of the match off the ground, but played a part in our last goal to seal the win.
Ricky O - just another close to BOG performance by Ricky. Superstar he is.
Parry - performed well in the ruck, and flew the flag for the team by decking Lindsay after he hit Poole in the face. Its good to see he is never intimidated.
Miller - wasnt as good as he has been in recent weeks, but still kicked 2 of his usual crumbing type goals.
AhChee - yet again was great in defence. His last half was excellent and a major reason we won. He didnt give Passador any space all day.
Fitzgerald - I thought he played quite well on Sh*tolella who was always under a lot of pressure when he got the ball. Should have nailed a goal in the 2nd quarter tho.
Macca19 POTY:
9 - Ebert, Ricky O, AhChee
8 - Poole, Plapp, Fiegert
7 - Sinkunas, Parry
5 - Lyle, Poulton, Clayton, Fitzgerald.
4 - Funcke, King, Miller
2 - Mcdowall
1 - Wilson, Ilett
0 - Evans, Beinke, Peucker
