whilst I won't relax until he's signed his life away to the blood n black, I was most heartened to see these comments on efc.com today:

Hurley named for Friday night
It’s great to be back in the team and I can’t wait to run out for the Bombers on Friday night,” Hurley said exclusively to essendonfc.com.au today.
“I am very proud of being an Essendon player and I can’t wait to represent the club again.”

Now, obviously that's just words, but I think they are extremely significant.

“It will be good to get the chance to repay the faith the club has shown in me and hopefully we can get a win for our fans”
“It has been hard watching from the sidelines so hopefully I can come back and help the boys out.”
Good Luck. :thumbsu:
Saw Hurley on the news last night.. looks like he's trimmed down a bit from last year..
Very excited to see him and Gumbleton in the forward line together:thumbsu:

While a lot of our kids are starting to show their wares, Hurley really is the pivotal player imo. The reason I believe this is he came into our side as an 18 year old and instantly had a 'presence' in the team and on the field. The only other players I've seen this from at such an early age since I can remember is Carey, Brown and Joel Selwood. Huge shoes to fill, but I hope he can over time.

So, SC question, Hurley to save coin for Ablett, or Brown to replace Riewoldt?:D
Works out well cause I love Hurley.

OK! You could be excused because I don't know how old you are; but do you remember seeing Fletcher? They grabbed him out of high school for goodness sake.

Timmy Watson was stolen from his parents in Dimboola at 15, that was a fair effort. Played some great games early in his career too.

I'm not talking about being "good" at a young age, but simply having a presence on the ground. I do remember Fletch, but I wouldn't say he had presence, he was simply just bloody good! Hurley seems to have that JB/Carey swagger and arrogance that he's better than the rest and could grab the game by the scruff of the neck at any time. Other players gravitate towards him and older players already have a healthy respect for him. Over the top, probably, but I do see this in the kid.
Too young to remember some of the other great players when they were debutants like Watson, Madden and TD. Jimmy had that silk about him even early on, but I don't think he had that presence early on. He certainly had it after 3-4 years in the system.

:thumbsu::thumbsu: This.
And I think this is why they also had to suspend him for his actions over preseason. Its great that he has the confidence and the swagger but he also needs to know that as great a player as he is/will be, he's not above the law and he's not above club suspensions.

let's hope he lives up the the hype this weekend. i can't wait to see him and gumby in the same forward line.
on form, and on paper, we really should win. it's about time we beat them over there. 2001 was the last time?

I read in the Bombers magazine an article with Hurley, Ryder, Pears, Hooker and Neagle saying how they all want to stay together and see what they can achieve at Essendon, but to hear him make a statement like that today is great! I'm confident he'll stay and I don't think the he harbours any bad feelings about the club imposed suspension. BRING IT ON THIS WEEKEND HURLS!

I just love paddy.
Scott Cummings had a "presence" early on. 8 goals in his first game from memory and "The Next Coleman" as the morning headline.

I don't understand this post. Cummings had the talent, but he was just too lazy. By all accounts Hurley has his head screwed on right and the taxi driver incident has made his drive all that much greater.

It's great he said that but at the same time he's hardly going to say that he hates the club, even if it were true.

And yet he kicked 32 goals in 10 matches of his first season, went on to repeat his 8 goal feat. in future home & away matches and actually won the Coleman medal in 1999... this is without mentioning that he was played out of position in '95 and '96 which contributed a part in his inconsistency, bar lack of determination and being just plain ol' lazy.
With that said, Cummings and Hurley are two different players in two different eras of the game.
I could do a 180 and make a comparison between him and Carey, but in the end, comparisons are useless, and we just need to let him make a name for himself in time.
