Central West AFL newcomers the Katoomba-Lithgow Mountain Lions, playing their first game since mid-April, put in a good showing despite going down to the Parkes Panthers at North Parkes Oval last Saturday.

The Mountain Lions lead at the first break in overcast conditions that were good for football. Toby Wellington, playing his first game of football, was a standout for the Mountain Lions, as were Stritch, Isles and the ever dependable Body. Bob Dobson, better known in the Central West for his role in motorsport, came out of retirement for the day to kick two goals.

The Panthers regrouped before half time and their superior fitness told in the end as they ran out 77 point winners. Apsey and Nolan led the way for the Panthers with Meuret making a solid contribution with seven goals.

Although the game was not for points as the Mountain Lions are playing in the CWAFL on a trial basis Parkes received four points for the bye.

Competition pacesetters the Cowra Blues continued on their winning ways with a 76 point victory over the Orange Tigers at Cowra, taking them right to the top of the CWAFL ladder. Aaron and Jason Newton and Mick McLiesh had big games for the Blues while Mark Cantrill battled for the visitors.

CSU posted their first win for the season in style with a181 point shellacking to their cross town rivals in the Bathurst Derby. Scott Ripley, direct from his dominant display in the ruck for the Central West representative side was best on ground for the Bulldogs.

The Dubbo Demons v Mudgee Black Swans match was also a one sided affair with the Demons running out winners by 223 points.

The results see Cowra out in front on the ladder on 20 points followed by Parkes on 16, Dubbo and Orange on 12 rounding out the top four. Below them are Bathurst on 8, CSU on four and the Mudgee Black Swans are yet to open their account.

This Saturday the Bathurst Eagles play the Cowra Blues at George Park Bathurst. Mudgee host CSU at Mudgee Sports Ground. Parkes and Orange do battle at North Parkes Oval and Dubbo will host the Katoomba-Lithgow Mountain Lions at South Dubbo.
