I am currently residing in the UK and in early July have the chance to see motorhead in early july in Sherwwod Forest. I need to know what people think are their best albums as they have released plenty so I can get some ammunition before i head to the gig. I have heard that "No sleep till Hammersmith" is possibly their best album.

i know there are guys on this board who can help me out here so I would appreciate your help

Cheers

Can't go wrong with AOS or Overkill.

Overkill is probably my favourite, although Ace of Spades, Bomber, No Sleep, Iron Fist, Self Titled and On Parole (album recorded with the guys from the Pink Fairies) are all fantastic. Later albums (Another Perfect Day, Orgasmatron, Rock n Roll) are still pretty good but the earlier stuff with Fast Eddie Clarke and Philthy Animal Taylor is sensational.

P.S. Lucky Bastard! I wish I was seeing Motorhead

I'm a fan of 1916 but haven't had anything else to compare it to.

"No Sleep..." is their best, it's a live album recorded around 1980/81 when they were probably at their peak.

Best studio albums would be "Ace of Spades" (1980), "Orgasmatron" (1986) and "Overkill" (1979).

Best songs would be Ace of Spades, Killed by Death, Bomber, Iron Fist, Overkill, The Hammer...

Also worth getting is the live video "Birthday Party", which was a show recorded in 1985 to mark the band's 10th year and from memory has all of the songs listed above. It also features a guest appearance at the end by most of the former members of the band, as well as Thin Lizzy frontman Phil Lynott (not long before he died).

There is a great 3 cd box set called Meltdown which is very good if you don't already own a stack of the originals. It has a good mix of their albums plus cd3 has a lot of live music as well.
I regulary play this to get a good fix of Motorhead.

Yeah I've got that one too. If you buy this, there really isn't any need to buy any studio albums because this box set has just about everything and contains almost four hours of music (it was released in 1991 so it has the best of everything up to but not including "1916"). Not sure if it's still available, but it was released on Castle Communications and carries the serial number ESBCD 146.

If you really dig this stuff, it's also worth checking out a German band called Sodom, who are huge Motorhead fans and combine the styles of Motorhead and British early black metallers Venom.

Get the Young Ones and watch Lenny do a great version of The Ace of Spades. Can't remember which episode.
