View Full Version : Left Arm Spinners!
Whilst idling away time dreaming of an English victory in this year's Ashes series I was thinking of the composition of the Australian side & trying remember English wins & it hit me that I can't think of any front line Australian left arm orthodox spinners.Does this particular species actually exist in Australia?I can't think of any that have played against England in the last 20 years (I'm not including part time bowlers such as AB),R there any about at the moment playing in the Sheffield Shield knocking on the door of the Test side?& can anyone tell me of any that have played Test cricket in the recent past?Or is that they don't get a look in with so many leg spinners in Aussie.Even off spinners seem pretty rare but I can think of about 3 or 4 of these that have played for Australia in the last couple of decades.

There aren't really any left arm spinners in contention for Australia. The only one who even plays in the MMC that i can think of is Jamie Stewart, who is on the outskirts of the NSW team.
The last brilliant left arm spinner we had was David Hourn, who played for the same club i did during the 70s. Most of you wouldn't of heard of him, but he was a brilliant bowler, picked up nearly 200 wickets for NSW.

So if Jamie Stewart is on the outskirts of the NSW team, that means he'll be picked for Australias tour to India http://www.bigfooty.com/ubb/biggrin.gif

Brad Young from SA has been around the mark for a couple of years and played a few ODI's. He did a knee or something before the season started and will miss the whole year.
Ray Bright was the last full time left arm spinner I can remember.

He'd be a handy one-day player. Very economical, can also look after himself with the bat (as long as he's not required to play any shots). *****ing useless at taking wickets though!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Aren't we all forgetting Brad Oldroyd here??
Left arm spinner from WA who just recently played for Australia A!!
Bit of a lunatic though.
Lehmann ???
Brad Young ???
Marsh in Tassie ???
Oldroyd
David Hookes
'course Bevan but he is over the wrist
ptw
Lehmann - part time bowler
Brad Young - part time bowler who cant bat
Marsh - gone from bowling all rounder to batsmen who bowls a bit
Oldroyd - half decent bowler, not international standard.
