HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HAH AH AH HA HA
I can still remember the NZ Prime Minister of the time, was it piggy Mullholand or something wanting to declare war on Australia. The dunce batting wouldnt have hit a six if he had 100 go's at it. But that doesnt excuse the underarm

The whole thing was taken completely out of proportion, although I remember watching the whole thing clear as day. McKechnie was never going to hit a six but it was GC's paranoia after losing to WI in a similar situation that caused the whole thing to happen.

The thing was there was nothing in the rules at the time to say you couldn't bowl underarm so you can call it cheating.

I remember David Hookes running out Dean Jones in a SS game when DJ was batting well out of his crease and Hookesy told the bowler to bowl the ball straight to first slip. Hookesy took the ball in front of the keeper, threw down the stumps and DJ was run out. DJ just accepted it as clever thinking. Same situation in '81, just lateral thinking using the rules.

I was there that day, way back when I was only 12 years old. I recall that Chappell disgraced miself twice that day.

Whilst batting, he skied one out deep behind square and was caught by a magnificent diving catch from Snedden. Unfortunately for the Kiwi's both umpires were watching for short runs and missed the catch. Chappell refused to walk and the umpires couldn't give him out. The pro-Australian crowd were disgusted at this unsportsmanlike behaviour. chanting for him to walk.

When that last ball was bowled, there was a general air of disbelief in the crowd (mixed in with a bit of anger as well). It was a funny feeling going home. We has won a close one dayer, but had that empty flat feeling that usually follows a loss. (Richmond supporters would know this feeling as the same that accompanies finishing 9th again http://www.bigfooty.com/ubb/biggrin.gif)

I don't think there were to many proud Aussies leaving the 'G that day!
