View Full Version : Mark McVeigh finished?
Has been a fantastic servant of the club but time has passed him by.
It was as shame to see him struggling with the pace of the game - and having no influence in the game.
Best that he plays the season out at Bendigo and retires.

I would probably drop both - Although I doubt that it can be done at the moment.

The worrying thing for me is that neither will get dropped because they're considered 'leaders' in the inner sanctum, when in reality they're the poster boys for our mediocre years.

Its a toss of the coin. Both these guys are struggling. Have been good servants of the club, in particular McVeigh who in his prime was a very good player. Welsh has only ever been average though IMO & how he got vice captain this year is beyond me. Would have thought Stants or Hille much better choices

Bad call. Killed davis. Stupid getting rid of the only people that can use the ball in the team.

Welsh is the one gone, McVeigh just came back from 5 days in Hospital, give hims some time.
Played a defensive role today, he is a good player when shutting people down, was 1000x better than Slattery.

Both of them are beyond their best.
But this thread is about McVeigh. As has been stated by other posters above me, neither will be dropped due to their standing in the club.
Who can we bring in to fill the void of these players?

It's just obvious that 2008 was an aberration. He's once again a solid back pocket.

Can we move forward having McVeigh in the back pocket and Welsh as a tagger.

No I don't think so. Not sure what McVeigh's contract status is, but Welsh is on his last contract with us. I do agree with your OP btw.

Lets wait a few weeks to end a guys career! I seem to remember some anti Knights supporters upset with hoe Lloyd was treated at the end of his time and McVeigh should be given the same respect IMO.
It was a terrible performance today, lets not sack loyal club man in round 5 ;)

I thought he played alright today. I love it how supporters want players who are hard at the ball and play with passion, yet after a bad game McVeigh is no good. Give him a break he will never be a star but he is still very good. His defensive attitude is more important than anything in a team such as ours at the moment.
I might be in the minority here but i have faith in McVeigh and would love it for him to prove all you experts wrong.

At the end of the day he was declared fit (either himself or the medical staff). If you are fit to play you should be playing to a high standard. Particularly as a senior player.
I thought he was okay. However anyone using the hospital thing as an excuse should blame McVeigh or the fitness staff. Do not bring in players unless they are fit. If he had spent another week in Bendigo players like Houli (who IMO did not deserve to be dropped) would be playing.
Personally I am divided on him. I think he bleeds for Essendon which is great. Not sure he is what we need going forward. My confusion is probably reflected in this post where I criticise him but say he went okay as well.

No.
Should be played permanently in defence though, where he is our best shut-down guy.

mcveigh had a reasonable period of football output just around the time he first went on the "footy show' he has done well, he has picked up an absolute gem of a missus and still does the odd "footy show" appearance which is worth around 1500k a go.
Unfortunately he, along with the ill-fitting suits he wears on the "footy show" has done diddly squat for 3 years now. welsh or mcveigh, one or the other, or both, will not be there next year, bad luck mcveigh, welsh has the longer contract. (and the better fitting suit)

A couple more losses could be the end for McVeigh and Welsh. They NEED us to win. Howlett, Muscles, T.Slattery, Hardingham...the door is a knocking.

This is a knee jerk reaction after a bad defeat. McVeigh played a defensive role today (well enough) and has had a very interrupted season so far. Has a couple of seasons left in him and will come good.
He's not up to it anymore. Solid servant but his time is finished. Don't see why he gets a guaranteed spot and Jason Johnson got shown the door 2 years ago. JJ was a much better player than Spike ever was, but he was done and moved on at the right time as a 30 year old. Spike is 29. Time to move on and enjoy married life.

Mcveigh I still have a fair bit of belief in just keep him out of the middle and in a forward or back pocket. Welsh on the other hand is in Gray Lyons terms is a list clogger, he just isn't good enough now I don't think our list is all doom and gloom because we showed last year we can match it with the best but welsh and hocking are just to slow for players that aren't smart enough and don't have good disposal. We really need to look to move these guys on before mcveigh and maybe try and get something for them because they just don't make the grade
He was very good today. He was never a midfielder to begin with. Same applies to Welsh, both good solid back pocket/half back flankers..

The problem is that we have players who cant cut it in the midfield and we want them to play in defence.
Sometimes we have to cut losses and move players on.

Yes, but we also need to not leak so many goals in defence...
Mcveigh was the only player in '08 that was mature enough to lead our young and inexperienced midfield back then.. Now that Watson is there, along with Stanton we can now move him back to his rightful position in defence.

I suggest the problem is lack of defensive actions across the ground.
Dont see how Mcveigh can help the backline under these circumstances.

Yes I agree with this.. We have too many front runners and not enough two way movers..
Thus sells our defenders into trouble..

The issue is not whether McVeigh or even Welsh are best 22, the issue is that if we keep losing, you need to look to the future. This seems to be already here imo, but I'm sure Knights and co will wait a couple of weeks. Then, it's time to get game time into Slattery (Tyson variety), Hardingham, Howlett etc.
One of the worst threads I have read on Bigfooty. McVeigh played really well in the first half on Davis and was a very calm head in defence. He suffered a little bit when he was moved into the midfield to cover for Welsh's inability to play AFL. He will be much better for the run.
He is one of only a few players to consistanly hit targets by foot and hand.

Obviously everyone on here has spent 5 days in hospital with a blood infection and then dominated in a game of elite sport 2 weeks later.

You cant expect a guy to play and dominate in 5 different positions every game. Just put him somewhere and leave him there.
Welsh on the other hand should be shipped to Fremantle.
Agree.

The game has passed him by.
McVeigh has played 2 games in the last 2 seasons - both as a small defender.
Whether this is valuable for the team long term is the question.
Gee - Peverill played better in his last 10 games and was still delisted

Replace 'McVeigh' with 'Welsh' and I'd agree.
Unfortunately, as Welsh has that VC tag; there is no chance of that happening. I am worried.

It's hard to say that after only a handful of games. I think he has been solid in both matches so far this season and will improve with each week. His disposal is clean and he is still very strong in the contest.
A guy like Welsh would fit into the category, given he played everyone yesterday and was completely ineffective.

Welsh has been Ok in his tagging role - except for Round 1.
But he doesn't offer much offensive work.

So Welsh is an 'OK' tagger, 'below average' going forward; that's putting it kindly. If you get into his pace & skills (being specific), he offers very little in those areas also. Not the bloke I want leading the club that's for sure. Being labelled 'tough' & 'courageous' can only take you so far. Unfortunately, players these days also have skill on top of also being considered 'tough' (eg. Lewis, McGlynn, Hayes, etc). Welsh is not, and will never be; considered in that bracket of footballers.

The problem with Welsh is that he is a liabilty in most areas at the moment. You simply can't have a player in your side who only offers you one thing.

After Sunday's game I was to say, time to retire McVeigh and Welsh and move on Slattery as these blokes aren't up to the standard of the game.
Upon reflection over the past couple of days through a hangover, after the infection McVeigh has had, we may need to look at him over the next couple of weeks to see what happens. He should be playing in defence on the opposition small forward.
Time to send Welsh and Slattery back to Bendigo and bring in the next group of players to take us forward. It's time to look at blokes like Myers, Houli, T.Slattery and co for an extended period of time to see what they have.
Proved tonight that he is far from finished. The best user of the ball in this side and played awesome tonight.
It is nice to know that when he has in the ball in his hands you can relax because you know he will make the right decision.

Perhaps as a leader he needs a season of good performances??
He talks so well, time to start leading.....

He and Welsh seem to think talking is more important than actions.
tonight they both used actions rather than words.

yeah nah, he's still got something to offer!
I made the call too early - I might have got carried away - Although Collingwood is making everyone look ordinary at the moment.
At least McVeigh is playing as a small defender - which he has always been effective - contrary to the view of many.
And I gave him 3 votes - I don't allow any Bias to affect my votinf for the 3-2-1.:)

Jump the gun a bit didnt you Yaco55?
One 'average' game after spending 5 days in an interstate hospital bed.
Far from day IMO. I still stand by the fact that he is our best kick inside 50 (although Zaharakis closing down on him) and is a very good small defender..

I was more concerned about his form from the beginning of 2009 which had been on a downward spiral.
Pretty confident that he can be a solid small defender for the rest of the year.
I am more worried about Ryder getting B.O.G for the BF Award.
Yet on the Power board - Brogan has been rated their 3rd or 4th best player.

I mentioned earlier that Gumbleton was almost anonymous - I know he kicked 3 goals ( and I would take that every week ) but he was up against a more seasoned defender ( Chaplin ) whereas in the previous 2 weeks he played against inexperienced defenders. In saying that I am happy with Gumbleton's progress.
It was a funny game in that nearly all the forwards who kicked multiple goals - had ordinary games.

Thanks for bumping this, as I didn't see it first time round.
The answer to the thread. Yes he is finished... As a midfielder. Seriously he was only ever put in there because we had no one else, and he did a damn good job (07/08). But he is not a midfielder, I'm very happy to see him being used down back, and I hope he stays there permanently.
Great user of the football, both skills and decision making wise, great overhead, very strong in a contest, reasonable pace. Just a solid footballer. Few years left in him, no doubt about that.
the selection committee erred in judgement playing mcveigh before he was fit enough for AFL level. no doubt mcveigh put his hand up to play but given the player availability he should have been given an extra week at vfl before coming in.
over the last fortnight we've seen the benefit he gained by having improved fitness.
