I just bought this 3-CD pack a couple of days ago. Good listening. It's tape Jimmy Page recently found of two Zeppelin shows played in Cali in 1972. Not entirely different from the BBC recordings. There are excellent takes of 'Over the Hills and Far Away' and 'Bring It On Home.'
The band sounds really tight. Zeppelin were notoriously sloppy live. Pagey must have been sober for these two shows. He does get a little sloppy at times, and his Les Paul tone is a bit too bright IMHO. Plant's voice is spot on.
What is different is the rhthym. JPJ's bass and Bonzo's drumming stand out high in the mix. Plant is at a lower level than on the BBC. I wonder if this is an artifact of the original recording, or if Page deliberately remixed it this way when translating it to digital? Regardless, it sounds really good and heavy - they way it ought. I always thought Zep needed a second guitarists for live work to fatten it up and keep it more consistent with their studio cuts. I always play with a second axe-man when I'm covering Zep. However, with the bass and drums cranked up, the three piece sounds just fine. Interesting.
There is also a DVD version, but I couldn't find it in the store when I was shopping. I'll continue looking.
Anyway, I give it two thumbs up. Anyone else got this CD yet?
Peace,
