View Full Version : On the Couch

For those of you with Foxtel, Nathan Brown is meant to be the guest on "On the Couch" Monday night. I am assuming his injury wont stop this as it did him being on the Sunday Footy Show this morning.
Also David King this morning defending him trying to take Birss' head off in a sickening clash. This must be stamped out. I remember when Mark West played for us this was one thing I really didn't like about his game. You can be hard at the ball and athe man without trying to attack the head. Those of you old enough only need to remember Neil Sasche. I certainly do and I don't want to see that again.

PS Where is Chicargo1 these days?

I'm with ya there Turtleman, that was a bad bump - I like to see players go hard at the ball and not the man. That still takes a heap of courage. It is not making it basketball to take some of these 'great shirtfronts' out of the game.

Chicago spat it after an argument over Murph having 'No War' written on his arm in the team photo - if you get a magnifying glass you can just make it out.

Wrong. I didn't "spit it" after the argument regarding Murphy. I just decided to follow the wise words of a fellow poster:
Originally posted by Templeton31Having read some of the things directed at C1 and and written about him I dont imagine he will be back. Or at least not for a very long time. I certainly wouldn't bother staying round after some of the personal attacks that have been written - not worth it.

I guess some of the posts of one thread just got a bit too personally abusive. I chose not to report the posts as a possible breach of the terms of membership for BigFooty. I probably should have, but at the time I didn't think my opinion would have mattered.
Originally posted by ****** *******Not everybody agrees to the war. If you do fine, it Murphy and the club offended you, fine, don't renew, but don't beat your chest to the newspaper like a typically loud and proud "big talking" American.

If you don't want to renew, stuff you we don't need supporters like you.

I choose not to associate myself with people of that ilk in real life so I figured why should I associate with them on this forum? I have no problem with the posters who argued my stance in a logical and respectful manner. However, I'm sure part of the vitriol was based on my citizenship. I've explained in PMs to a few posters that I encountered that kind of bigotry in my 25 years in Australia. Fortunately those sort of people were in the minority, just as in this forum.

For those interested, the following was to be a part of a follow up to the original H/S story but the column didn't make it to print that week and I asked that the matter be dropped completely after that. No sense in prolonging the situation.

"The decision by the Chicago based Bulldogs member of 25 years to drop his membership over Murphy's airing of his antiwar stance on official club merchandise has caused a minor stir among local fans. ******* believes that no political view whatsoever should be expressed using the club as a forum. But he is now reconsidering his own stance and is almost certain he will now renew and lay aside his differences with the club. He says he loves the Doggies too much and the club has enough problems to worry about." Unfortunately due to financial restrictions I haven't renewed as of yet, but plan to do so later this week.

I've followed the team's results faithfully on the AFL scoreboard every weekend, though I have to confess I went to bed during the third quarter of the match against Freo. Sitting in front of a computer in the early hours of the morning and seeing the score change dramatically as it has for the Bulldogs in the last three matches has not been easy. The current team's position on the ladder brings back awful memories of the early 80s. Interesting to read that some posters have said they weren't going to some matches because of the losses. All I can remember is that back in the days when losses were the norm, a win was oh, so sweet! Don't deprive yourselves of the feeling.

I have corresponded with a few posters the past two months and have appreciated their PMs.

I may not have been posting..... but I've been watching!

A win against my "other" club, West Coast, would certainly bring a smile to my face this weekend.

Regards,
C1

PS - The mighty Chicago Cubs have been in first place in their division for about a month! A World Series Championship after 95 years would be part of a dream come true. But then again...... my mind returns to the MCG Preliminary Final Day 1997.:(

Do you have a membership yet? Well buy it and get over it. You're not a hero for getting one. You've caused the dogs bad publicity, it's the bloody least you can do.

Well I don't think we should all go "yes you love bombing innocent people and you gave the dogs bad publicity when you could have easily just shut up AND you didn't buy a membership when our club is struggling to survive, yes you are my HERO for thinking about getting a membership!"

Please feel free to ignore my comment, try not to take it to the papers this time.

Having missed the whole argument, i cant resist putting my 2 cents in.

It seems to me that if John Howard can get a standing ovation at a baseball game, due completely to his support for the war, then Murph can have a sign on his arm in the team photo. Cant have it both ways.

Chicago, renew your membership!

dd17 - agree a bit more with your second post, though i'm not sure c1 is saying he's a hero for now being about to get a membership (and neither do I think so). And certainly I think the papers were a poor move - but that is all the past now.
Just think it's good to have someone (who from what I can tell is very much a doggies fan - yes, whatever happened last year) coming back into the fold.

Thanks Chops, brother fish(You're not a Christian Brother Fish are you? ), bulldogs1 and stefoid.

stefoid, I think Howard went to a Yankees game....... bastard!:D They're in town next week to play the Cubs for the first time since 1938. Tried to get a ticket but they were sold out in ten minutes over the net.

I've been thinking of becoming a faith healer and returning to Melbourne to help the team for the rest of the year. As my Jewish grandmother would have said, "It can't hoit!" But then again there seems to be an opening for a FF. Maybe I can convince Cookie to return! :D

Thanks mel. And remember..... when you see the Doggies win their next match whenever that may be, you'll enjoy it more than most other matches you've ever seen. Maybe that's what the younger supporters need. Kinda like anticipating Christmas for a four year old...... but don't break your Chrissie present(Birssy) if you ever get him!;)

Welcome back, Chicago. You are one of the few people that post in my time zone. :)

Wasn't across the Murphy nastiness with posting here - I was wondering what had happened to you - thought you'd gone down in some heroic gunfight in a Chicago 7/11.

I was surprised about the nastiness of some of that war stuff, but there are some very nice people who post here - one is posting me a video of the Adelaide game because my video let me down. And there are also some dills....

You got it right there, DR. I guess the riff raff just need to be ignored. I was very impressed with the affable PMs I received from some posters whom I've never met. Hope to meet them next year. Of course, the ones who know me were fantastic. They know who they are and we'll be sitting together at Telstra Dome next year for sure!

Thanks for your welcome back and to Old School and NW2 also.

Almost forgot..... bulldogs1..... please remember that I was a West Coast member in 1989 when I lived in Perth. Of course I joined only to get into the matches cheaper and barrack for the Victorian sides! They didn't have a very good season that year!:D

Hey Chicago,

This is London Bulldog. Just making my point that I never abused you personally or anyone else on this forum, not my style, I don't know you. I acutally started the post originally, urging you to resign and not to let it effect the way you feel about the club.

It was an emotional topic and I expressed dissapointment with you going to the papers when there were more important things in the world at the time. I labelled this act as "big taking American" and if you can't let it go we don't need you. Nothing was directed at you personally but more the act of going to the papers. Chicago it was an emotional topic and it was bound to get a response. The the whole idea of a forum to drum up debates. Not everyone will agree on it, but I don't have a problem with associating with you on the forum again and to be honest I don't think anybody else does.

p.s. Save those pennies the membership cut date must be closing soon.

I agree with these sentiments. After Roos game best policy is to bunker down into "we're gonna lose mentality" (a-la early 80s) with the knowledge that you can spring out of your box with joy when we do win.

On the Browny front - what did he say? small article in the age today about his comments suggesting basically he's no.1 priority was to win a premiership and no.2 to secure his financial future. Ideally he would like to do that at the Dogs with his mates of 10 years but he had to weigh that up. Thats the summary-of-the-summary anyway. Anyone see it for real?

I have a read a lot of interviews with Nathan Brown and heard him speak about a variety of topics including financial stability and success in football and I just get the feeling if Collingwood,Essendon or Brisbane offered him more than what we could offer him he would ask to be traded.
Someone once asked what he was going to do after his footy career was over and he replied "Nothing". He clarified this by saying he hopes to make enough money playing footy so he doesn't have think about life after footy.

I hope I am wrong because he is a genuine match winner and there are not many in the league. He is also a very popular player amongst many of our supporters.

Welcome back Chicago...i always knew you would do the right thing ;)

I cannot remember what i said but i hope i didn't offend you. After i had met you, and the fact that you must have spent a fortune to come here and see the doggies play, I really could not understand how you could turn your back on the club in that way. But obviously you did feel very strongly about the issue and it is good of you to come back, as i am sure many who have been upset by the club have not.

From the lips of Browny:
1. He thinks he IS worth $500,000, along with about 20 other players in the AFL and said Matthews was only protecting his own interests, in that the Lions have so many good players they can't afford to pay them all what they are worth.
2. He'd like to stay with the Dogs and his mates but bearing in mind that a footy career is short, he wants a premiership and to secure his financial future.
3. He won't negotiate a new contract till after the end of the season, as he has also done the last 2 times he's been out of contract.
4. He has bought a pub with Wayne Campbell.
5. Morale at the club is not high at the moment but of course they hope to turn things around and win about 6 more games for the year.
6. Understood why Rohde dragged Kretiuk, as an example to the younger players, not to appease supporters.
7. Said his goal-kicking style is the same as it's always been but had a bit of the yips for the first few games. Goal/behind ratio has improved over past 3-4 games.
8. Has breakfast with Wallace, Westy and Oberon Pirak every Thursday. Wallace gives him advice.

Welcome back Chicago your posts have been sorely missed, as i always enjoyed reading them. They bring yet another opinion to the board which is good.

Hate to bring up the subject again but some ppl are still forgetting that chicago was not saying he was for the war just that NO POLITICAL opinion should be on any offical Western Bulldogs merchandise, and i happen to agree with him 100%.

Oh yes and DD17 you were telling chicago to get over it all and buy the membership yet you are still ****ed off at him, take some of your own advice and deal with it. Ps. Good luck on your exams, I always used to hate doing them.

I am saying he's not a hero. Buy it and shut up about it. My problem is no longer with the murph thing, it's with the sluky manner in which he posted all the "nasty" comments that had been said about him.

I think taking it to the papers and not buying a membership was more nasty than any of them and deserved all the criticism it got.

And chicago...about my nastyness, i think you deserve it. You showed your true loyalty. Will I take it to the papers or will you?

Love the smiley thing at the end, so sincere.

Not good signs for him to stay at the club however, it could all be a bit of a bluff to get the club to squeeze out a little more
