Anyone unfortunate enough to ever read one of her 'columns' will know this is a great day for Australian journalism.

Talentless and humourless.

i actually thought that some of her stuff in the age on occasions was quite funny.
when i saw what she written regarding bindi and tasma, i was quite disgusted and repulsed.
there is a line and she crossed it, she deserves to get the arse from her job.

Whether your a fan of Rove or not her twitter comments about him and his wife were absolutely pathetic. Even if she was smashed (she swore in many twitter messages they showed on ACA, so she probably was) how can you even think that about someone?

Good, she deserves it.

Funniest bit was her 'i'm a comedian, get over it' defence. Might have worked if she had ever actually been funny.

Reckon there will be a fair bit of schadenfreude running about now!

Why? She said she hoped Tasmyn didn't die, she was thinking about how depressing that would be for Rove. As to Bindi, she didn't say when she hoped she got laid, she could have been talking when she is old enough & because she is a creepy looking kid, may have doubts that will happen. By the way, why does her mother parade her around in adult gatherings, both here & America, dressed up to look older than she is, maybe people should be directing their anger at Terri, who is pushing her into the limelight.

By the way, I only watched Rove a few times & he has said some very cutting things about people that could be taken the wrong way, this woman only did it on Twitter & if the media hadn't have jumped on it for ratings, no one apart from the people at the Logies would have known what she said.

Unfortunately, "it was satire" is increasingly becoming the excuse of choice for genuinely stupid and/or vicious people who go too far with their public comments.

Haha, I read her response this morning and now this, finally she's managed to produce some comedy.

Imagine if Kyle made cracks about Rove's dead wife and Bindi Irwin getting laid. Catherine can be out there if she wants but out there is out of mainstream journalism.

I'm with you on this one mantis. If Terri Irwin has decided to take her daughter in the direction she has, and parade her through a life of media outings and exposure to the general public, then she should be prepared to cop the negative comments. The media are just jumping on a story, that quite frankly, doesn't exist. Deveny has been posting these kind of comments on Twitter for over a year now. Why haven't they reacted before now?

Exactly. Most people revert to a conservative base (populist) when they're unsure about their position on something. It's much safer to be part of the majority, than be all alone out in the cold wind where you're no longer one of the cool kids.

I quite liked the twitters from Deveney and Anderson, nothing like a good old fashioned piss take of the most shallow and pointless evening on Australian TV. I think people really are just being a bit too precious about the whole thing.

Deveney is an immature sad sack of shit - she was a comedy writer for 'the Wedge', probably the unfunniest show that Australia has ever produced.

Don't forget the juvenile attack she made the week before on the Anzac veterans where she said amongst other things : "'Anzac Day IS a glorification of war. They didn't die for us but because they were risktaking testosterone fuelled men with a pack mentality'' ..

Serves her right, she deserved to be sacked. Not just for the tasteless, unfunny comments she made but for using twitter at an event like that.

Anyone that goes out somewhere like the Logies and sits there all night twittering about other people is just a self absorbed, attention seeking f-wit in my book. Same goes for Will Anderson and anyone else doing it.

It's easy to make smartass comments about people on twitter behind their backs. You can bet they wouldn't have the guts to go up and say that sort of stuff to their faces.

How would you feel if you were having a few drinks and a friendly chat with Catherine Deveny or Will Anderson that night and then found out later they were making nasty comments about you on twitter?

I've never been a really huge fan but come on, if the Chaser guys had made those comments everyone would be on board supporting them.

The Chaser boys overstepped the mark at times and were rightly criticised for it. I am a fan of Chaser and I have enjoyed some of Deveny's columns before.

I do think though that when people go purely for shock value and are caught out just being offensive. Their default position becomes "It's satire, if you don't get it - you are stupid and a 1950s conservative". That is just rubbish.

There have been child stars for decades now. They attend gala nights out when most kids their age are in bed. People have not always made the sort of remarks that Deveny made about them.

To make a sexually suggestive comment in relation to an 11 year old girl was innapropriate. It was not clever, witty or satirical.

Put simply, Catherine Deveny has a grossly inflated opinion of her own intellect.

The reality is that she's little more than an embittered, hypocritical pseudo-intellectual who continually feels the need to push the boundaries of decency in a desperate attempt to stay relevant.

5 May 2010, 10:28
Just to clarify - she can't have been sacked - she was a freelance journalist with no contract. The Age have just chosen to no longer use her articles. And good thing too - her Twitters were a disgrace and her excuses were pathetic. Trying to hide behind 'comedy' and thinking that controversial and poor-taste comments are somehow edgy and clever is typical and hopeless.

You are a deadset goose and that is being kind.

The comment about Rove and Tamsyn was clearly inappropriate and completely lacking in class. I'm sure they both love having the topic of Rove's dead ex-wife being the subject of "satire"

As for Bindi the girl is 11 years old FFS. She is at "adult functions" because she is a television performer and it is a television awards night, nothing wrong with that.

You obviously dont have any kids because I would be ropable if someone made that comment about my daughter

5 May 2010, 11:21
One of Catherine Deveny's pathetic excuses was that twittering her comments was like passing notes in class when you were at school. If you were texting/emailing a friend privately with those comments then that analogy might work but not for twitter.

With twitter you're broadcasting your comments on the web to anyone that wants to follow it. If you're a famous person or even semi famous then any comments you make are likely to be picked up on and used in the media. Deveny is naive and stupid to think otherwise.

I know! Haha how does any of that apply. A bloke would be lucky not to have been killed for saying something like that. Actually maybe it is about class (her lack thereof) and take deprivation out and it is about relevance (the fact that she doesn't have enough to make her BS worthwile)

The Bindi one was borderline good satire- I think people need to stop being so precious about stuff like that (i still don't think it was particularly funny).

The big issue IMO was that Rove comment. That showed such a distinct lack of compassion, class or humour that she deserves no sympathy. Even if she truly meant it it's still a disgrace. Who says something like that!

It's quite funny that a lot of the 'radical' type of humorists, writers and activists have come from that kind of background. Is it because they've seen that side and rallied against it. Perhaps more that they are set for money from the 'rents and thus can afford to pursue their beliefs a bit more?

Got to disagree with you on that. It should become a talking point (I think satire now is geared towards doing this) and hopefully lead to some serious discussion about how wrong it is to have kids dressing up like adults etc and always in the public eye.

The fact that she is a little girl is kind of the point. It's a disgusting thought it creates but then points out the wrongness of her being put out there like that. I think the sexualisation of kids is one of the biggest problems we need to deal with.

I understand your point but disagree. Bindi Irwin hardly dresses innapropriately for her age. I have no doubt that it is unusual for an 11 year old to be attending gala late night functions but it is not unheard of. If she was dressing in a suggestive manner, then the sexualisation of children could then become a reasonable subject for satire in that context. As she dresses conservatively, it is tenuous at best to think Deveny was exposing the exploitation of children.

It was a crap excuse that she pulled out of her arse after cocking up badly. I know when I have taken work home before that it suffers the more red wine I drink.(Even worse when I got on the Jamesons!!!!)

Maybe she had one too many sitting at home wishing she got an invite and her bitterness just got the better of her.

I think there's satire, and then there's going too far.

And anyway, it doesn't really matter what anybody on here thinks. The internet is a wonderful medium, we can say whatever we want with little restriction. But once you attach your name to your work, you can't then complain when it all blows up in your face. Is it really surprising that The Age, of all papers in this country, don't want her services anymore?

It's like going for a job and getting knocked back for stuff you wrote on facebook. You have nobody else to blame but yourself if that happens.
