In its quest to maintain India's No.1 Test ranking the BCCI has sent a proposal to Cricket Australia to convert the seven-match ODI series in October to two Tests and three ODIs. India had climbed to the top spot in 2009, after drubbing Sri Lanka 2-0 at home, and then retained the ranking by fighting back to level the two-Test series against South Africa in February.

"We've got an open mind on it but it's being discussed and that could be the road down which we will go," a CA spokesman told the Australian on Tuesday.

This is not the first time the Indian board has intervened to change the original itinerary of a proposed tour. Earlier this year Cricket South Africa had agreed to a compressed tour of two Tests and three ODIs, replacing the original five-match ODI series. India's change of mind came in the wake of ascending to the No.1 Test ranking for the first time, and they were eager to preserve it.

According to the ICC's Future Tours Programme, India were scheduled to play only a handful of Tests in 2010, an aberration the BCCI is desperate to correct. So far this year, India have played four Tests but are lined up to play three in Sri Lanka in July, and then another three at home against New Zealand at the end of the year.

Whoop de whoop. I'd prefer it if we hosted India first, but ah well. Should be good prep for the Ashes, seeing as we haven't played any good teams since the last Ashes.

no point in wrecking ourselves before the Ashes. Stick with the worthless ODIs.

The only worries I have about wrecking ourselves before the Ashes are on spending a month on flat surfaces and then coming back here to face the English swing attack at Brisbane. But we did it alright in 2008, despite the fact we got skittled by NZ on a green top.

Why do India always get what they want?

Well what would you prefer?

A 7 ODI series or 2 test & 3 ODI?

I prefer tests and 7 ODI's is overkill.

I'd rather the Tests, give a good hit out before the Ashes, despite the conditions. No one cares about the ODIs

Tests are a great idea. We need a better warm-up before the Ashes and that will be a good tough series. Playing over there will test the Rug as he's only played tests against very poor batting line-ups so far.

not real sure whats better.

the meaningless 7 odi's would be a good lead up to the world cup coming as well, as well as resting a few players before the ashes, whereas playing the 2 tests would give the aussies a few extra tests before the ashes and to nut out the couple of fringe spots in the team.

i think you'll find after the pakistan tests in england, bangladesh play 2 tests (rescheduled from '08) in australia (top end) which is still yet to be confirmed.

Yeah why not let India get cheap points. Though I would love to see Johnson go back over and bowl pump. They'd probably take Lee as well and maybe even revisit Krejza.

Not sure its the best place to play before a big home series, the challenge for Australia might be handy but then having to come back and perform on totally different surfaces against decent opposition... I have noticed some players who struggle to get going after a tour of India and takes a couple of games to readjust, they would probably be better off having the test speciallists getting some first class games under their belt

if this does happen. we need a spinner that will bowl every day, not like last time when we decided it would be a good idea to pick a spinner and not bowl him.

well we should get the next 2 series between these 2 at home than.

Hope CA pass on this. Just stick to the ODI's IMO.

We'll go over there with Haury and Smith this time, as opposed to Krejza and McGain last time. Replacing McGain with White was a regrettable move, especially seeing as Casson performed wellish on his debut a few months ago. This time we've got one front liner, and a better spinner than Cameron White so we should do better in that department. The attack also has improved, and it's now younger and fitter.

Both Smith and Hauritz will get eaten alive in test cricket in India. They won't be bowling to players with dodgy techniques like you see in the 20/20 teams, they'll be bowling to SRT, Dravid and Laxman.

But in any case, it would be good experience for Smith and he doesn't look like the sort of kid who is cowed by anything.

Hauritz would hardly be out of his depth in India.

Tour now confirmed. Anyone know whether it is considered as part of the Border-Gavaskar trophy? Probably not I would think as it is only 2 tests?
