Memo to Knights. You have two Slattery's on your list.
The world won't explode if you play both of them.

Only 22 fit into the team at once. Can't play everyone. The other Slattery's time will come.
Very happy to Howlett back in. Very, very happy.
Pleased to see Melksham in.
Please not to see Myers.
Disappointed TSlatts isn't in.

okay im in vancouver and its late and we lost the (hockey) game tonight and ive had a few beers, but i sense trouble for careers of houli & myers at essendon!
like the ins though, and dont have many problems with the outs(even though they are forced)! this is a team that SHOULD beat PA!
At least Howlett gets a game!

Yes, but only because the selections before this week were so poor.

if not what do the italics mean?

Yeah, according to the keyboard warriors.
Both times that our ins/outs were howled down with fits of rage we won, go figure?
Yes, but only because the selections before this week were so poor.
How were last week's selections poor? We won the game comfortably.

Yes, but only because the selections before this week were so poor.
How? We won the game comfortably and everybody played well. Everyone on here suggested that we dont drop anybody (with the 2 blokes out with injury/suspension), and thats exactly what the match committee did. How were last week selections poor then?
Williams in the emergencies as a likely replacement should Hurley not be right.
What's wrong with Hurley?

It seems to be the 'in' thing this year for Essendon supporters to kick and scream after every team announcement. Ill back the match committee to get it right, they see a lot more of the boys than I do. At least until something is bleedingly obviously wrong.....which there isnt atm.

Yes, but only because the selections before this week were so poor.
i also wasnt a big fan of the selections last week,....but i dont think you can question them this week...haha we won by 7goals... did you expect to win by 15goals with better selections?
What's wrong with Hurley?
Knee soreness, should be right to play.
Yes, but only because the selections before this week were so poor.
Guys I don't think he means last week alone..Rounds 1-5 as well

Ok I get it:-
Lose = team selections suck
Win = well...team selections suck anyway

I was writing that I was happy with selections; I emphasised I was happy for Myers not being selected, as opposed to the other points.

Happy to see Howlett back in but dissapointed to see that Tyson Slattery was overlooked again.
My opinion was based on the first 5 rounds not just last round.
We could have put out Bendigo Bombers last week and beaten Hawthorn they showed no heart at all. Team selection didn't win us that game.
I will be watching Lonergan and Atkinson very closely to see if they can back up their games last week against an opponent this week.

You should not speak so much sense AS9 :p
I may have to card you for this :D
LOL.. Seriously, people on here clearly have no idea sometimes and I see why people with knowledge and sense get driven away by all the dribble on here.
But clearly..
Atkinson deseved a gig last week? two average weeks with Bendigo.
Prismall deserve a game last week? went away and sooked about it (from all reports)
Welsh deserve a game last week after such a poor start to the season, or does VC have more bearing on team selection than we are led to believe?
So..
T.Slattery is in the best in all three opening games and is not selected.
Howlett is B.O.G and very close to it in the earlier game and is not selected.
Neagle backs up his recent good form and is not selected after we could have used another tall in the side.
Taking out result.. Were these good selections last week?
In my opinion.. No.
That is why people get sooo annoyed at team selection time.

You could look at it from the perspective of the selection panel.
Horses for courses with Atkinson, Prismall with the match ups, and Welsh with faith in the VC.
Simple really.
How deep is that midfield looking?
Love the changes.

Bit shocked M.Williams didnt get a run. Even if Hurley comes up it would be handy having him in a pocket. Proven goal kicker & at Jihad against a questionable Port defence hes more than capable of kicking 3 or more golas which might just prove the difference...

How is this relevant? The players who Knights and the MC selected all had an impact or at the very least played their role well, opposition has nothing to do with it.

Step back and have a listen to what you're saying...in other words:
Irregardless of the form the selections had at AFL level, because they were selected ahead of players who were in better form it is a bad selection.
So if Jetta was (hypothetically) to be selected ahead of T. Slattery and then came in and gathered 15 possessions, kick 3 goals in the AFL - that would be a poor selection?
Knights and the MC's selections all had an impact - therefore selections were vindicated.

Looking back at it now, they were good selections.
Prismall in the best, Atkinson solid.
All I am saying is, at the time they were a bit 'left field' decisions.
I'm just going to drop this argument I am having with myself now I think.

T Slattery still has disposal issues. Once he gets that right, he'll be getting a game.

Having a look at the named sides, every reason I go through suggests Port Adelaide should belt Essendon especially in light of recent results. The reality is I have no idea with Port Adelaide given our established form of the past 2 seasons and the let down a week after the Showdown.
Good luck for the weekend.. result aside ;).

howlett, thank **** for that, slatts2 be in soon

should be neagle if fit(ish), no reason for that lazy hack to get back in

The most frustrating thing - is listening to people being critical of so called "left field" decisions based on Bendigo Bombers Form.
Do people forget that Hayden Skipworth played very good footy for Bendigo (in fact he still does) but struggled with the tempo of league footy.
They are used for emphasism.
I was writing that I was happy with selections; I emphasised I was happy for Myers not being selected, as opposed to the other points.
I'd really love to see Myers make it, if/when he gets selected again I'd be reasonably happy that the coaches think he is fit and ready to give it another ago.

The most frustrating thing is peoples lack of grammatical aptitude. Not that hard.
Anyway, don't think selections matter that much to be honest- it's how committed each individual player is, and how hard they are willing to push for that win.
Last week, I thought our changes were horrible, but we mauled our opposition in attack on the ball and ferocity at the player. If anyone named Prismall in our best, that is a sick joke too.
Looking forward to seeing NLM continue his great form and increase his average of 27.8 disposals/game this year, and knock out some gimp Port Adelaidians at the same time. Gumby to kick 17. Brogan to be annihilated.
Bombers by 19.

Recent results don't mean jack come Saturday.
Should belt? What are you basing this on? Over the last 18 months we've been pretty even in terms of games won - yes you guys seem to always beat us, but on the whole, the results say we're pretty even.
I don't particularly rate your forwards except for R Gray and Motlop - they've definitely given us trouble in the past and I'd expect they'll prove a handful to us again.
I expect our rucks to have a clear advantage (although Hille/Ryder haven't been at their best lately - except vs Hawks, I'm hoping that they'll carry on that form).
The midfield battle will most likely decide this match as your defence looks to have our forwards covered and vica versa. You have a little more talent in the middle but if our rucks fire, we might gain the ascendancy.
Then again, Essendon haven't been able to back up a good performance for the last year and a bit so I'm fully expecting to lose, but certainly not get belted.
The most frustrating thing is peoples lack of grammatical aptitude. Not that hard.
That was totally uncalled for - if your pointing out grammar errors in that post then maybe you should be posting on "BigToff" or "BigEnglish" instead of BigFooty...it's a footy forum mate

1. Port Adelaide has a more mature and generally experienced side compared to Essendon.
2. Early season form shows a gulf between the two sides.
3. Port Adelaide has won the last 5 matches by an average of 7 goals Essendon vs Port Adelaide (http://afl.allthestats.com/teams/teamvteam.php?t1=12&t2=5&yrfm=1897&yrto=2010)
4. I cannot see any where that Essendon has a clear advantage.
I'm basing my comment on the perceived difference in quality and the fact that Port Adelaide has had Essendon's measure for the better part of a decade now. I don't mean any disrespect to Essendon.
Truth be known I'll be happy with just the win. Last season Port Adelaide was in the same position and dropped the game to North Melbourne.

1. Mature and experience doesn't = talent, not that I'm specifically saying that Essendon is more talented.
2. Agreed.
3. Irrelevant
4. Maybe you should take your rose-coloured glasses off. Clearly an advantage in the rucks to the Bombers.
Just a tip - the game isn't played on paper, on form - Port should win, and I expect them to win.

You're saying right teams don't have teams that for one reason or another they struggle against? Surely you go in to matches against Carlton feeling optimistic from the outset?
As for the clear advantage in the rucks. That's a fallacy. You have a advantage in the second ruck position. This will depend on how much Brogan rucks to consider it a clear advantage or not.

Great to see Howlett get another opportunity. Seems like a good replacement for Welsh as it won't change the balance.
I think we'll miss Dyson a bit but I like the side on paper.
Happy to see Howlett in,

If Houil is the contracted player we lose then I'll hardly be upset.

It was relevant because no matter what side we put out we still would have beaten Hawthorn because they were THAT bad.

Nice to see you're giving him a chance. Also, don't you think your post is a little hypocritical.
Surprised that Melksham is selected before Colyer.
Thought that Colyer has shown a bit more than Melsham at this stage.

shocked Melksham b4 M.Williams. We did kick enough to win last week I suppose but with the exception of Hurley & Monfries who else do we really have that is a proven goal kicker...???
Dont see why Kinghts wouldnt have picked M.Williams - even to come off the bench and lurk in a pocket and snaffle a couple.... We gave him a juicy contract to come here so why not use him?
Surprised that Melksham is selected before Colyer.

Colyer has got massive disposal issues - needs to sort them out.

Re-watch the Carlton Essendon game. Melksham was fantastic especially in the first half. Colyer can run fast but Melksham was pure class.

Interesting comment.
Colyer has kicking issues, but according to stats Melksham disposal efficiency is less than 40 %

This seems like you're trying to say you know the team better than Knights and the MC do.
The selections would've been made from a mixture of VFL Form and Training form. If they think the player will suit the game, they'll get an in.
You say they were poor decisions but if they both played well they obviously weren't
Ryder has been given first crack at Brogan today. Howlett, NLM, Winder have been designated on ballers for the day to assist Jobe. And Stants, Pris and Melkshake have been assigned to the wing positions today.
