View Full Version : The Postcard Bandit
Fall Out Boy

Anyone else watch this last night?
I quite enjoyed it, although it seemed a little far fetched (despite being based on a true story) in parts.
Interestingly, they portrayed Brenden Abbott as a very intriguing, likeable and somewhat heroic figure.
Thoughts?

Saw the end of it, looked suprisingly decent.
That true they still haven't found $5M of his loot?!

Yep, very true.
Given Abbott has another 28 years to serve in QLD, before facing at least 5 charges in WA, he might struggle to see any of it.
No doubt he's still hoping to escape again, but given he still spends 20 hours a day in a cell, he's going to find it pretty damn hard.

Loved it.
I found myself actually cheering for him.
"Run Brenden run!" :D
Interesting story.
Alot of stuff in the film took place where I live (Gold Coast) and it was strange seeing the scene where he robbed the bank at Pacific Fair shopping centre on Christmas Eve. It was a huge story back then.
Yeah I enjoyed it.
Only problem was, I knew the ending :D
But it was a really good film. I can imagine there are a few protege bank robbers around the country right now.
I'm not sure what it was like in the other states, but when he did the job on the bank in Mirrabooka (only like 5 minutes from my place) they didn't actually film it in Mirrabooka, it was some other shopping centre.
It was good to see that Blue Heeler chicks norks as well.

I thought it was reasonably entertaining, but not top shelf. If it hadn't had Tom Long as lead, it would have been a dud.

A set of norks should be a regular fixture in every movie.
Anyone know the name of the James Reyne/Australian Crawl song he sung at the pub where BJ introduces himself to Reyne?
The song James Reyne sang was "Reckless".
The song Abbott asked him to sing was "Always the way".

HAHA
They used an awful lot of creative licence in that scene.

I thought that Brenden was caught in Noosa after the Brisbane jail breakout?
Anyone care to help me out here?
Nah he broke out, then was on the run for a while, and he did a bank job here in WA at Mirrabooka, which I clearly remember, because it is just up the road from my place.
He then got caught in Darwin, but I was under the impression he got caught in Darwin in a pizza store.

Good movie - I remember when he broke out with all those other bad folk and he came back to WA. Was a very nervous time to do your banking when he was on the loose!
And Dash from Blue Heelers was fantastic! ;)

Yeah great movie. Interesting persuasive techniques as I too found myself cheering Abbot on. Or that could be because I love Tom Long.
Made it like a documentary in some parts which worked well. Thumbs up from me!

Tom Long is a gun. (Can that term be used for an actor? :D)
Has great range. Amazing that it was him playing the nerdy guy Glen in 'The Dish'. To go from that to playing Brendan Abbott is a great transformation.
No wonder he is a NIDA graduate.

That should be "it's amazing that he's a NIDA graduate".

Yep good point. Also played nerdy Angus in the now-gone series Seachange. Not to say this isn't the first time he hasn't played a wimpy role ... in 'Hero's Mountain' about the Thredbo disaster he played one of Stuart Diver's rescuers.

Bump. I didn't want to create a new thread.
I just want to express my love for this movie. It is an absolute rollercoaster of a film.
"The name's Banks"
"Rob Banks"
"I rob banks."
I love it! I bought the DVD after watching it on TV and lent it to mates who reluctantly watched it. They were bloody glad they did in the end!
What do you think of The Postcard Bandit?

A lot of this was filmed in Cronulla. The Gold Coast highrise he lives in is actually the Cote de Azur building in Cronulla and the shop at the end where he gets busted is a set of shops in Elouera Rd in Cronulla.
