Amateur footballer dies
June 2, 2003
AN amateur footballer who collapsed during a Melbourne suburban game two weeks ago has died in hospital.
Anthony Molan, 24, died at 1am (AEST) yesterday after two weeks in intensive care at Monash Medical Centre, hospital spokesman Andrew Williamson said.
Mr Molan, who played for De La Salle Old Collegians Amateur Football Club - or De La - remained on the ground after a pack dispersed during a game against St Kevin's on May 17.
He never regained consciousness.
The cause of Mr Molan's collapse and subsequent death is not known.
Monash Medical Centre and De La Football Club said Mr Molan's family had requested that no comment be made at this stage.
"It's such a tragic time for the family, they are pretty upset," said club secretary Colin Glover.
Mr Molan was a fifth-year medical student at Monash University, who completed a placement at Monash Medical Centre just days before he collapsed.
He played for the Warriors, the third team at De La Football Club, which is part of the Victorian Amateur Football Association.
Club president Patrick McConville said it was likely the club would hold a memorial service.
condolances to the family :(
