View Full Version : Hard decisions what a luxury!
With Macpharlap & Parker fit, Haines reminding us how good he is,
Macca, Matty Carr & Jimmy in career best form, Who is going to make way?
Glad I'm not a selector. :)

Hayden and Parker will be needed in defence to play on Pickett and Shaun Burgoyne.
I'd give McPharlin another week or two in the WAFL and bring Parker back for Waterhouse. He is the least dangerous of our forwards and our side would be better off with Parker at his expense.

Who is the best matchup for Tredrea? I'd go with Woods. Polak on Cornes, Hayden on S. Burgoyne, Parker on P. Burgoyne and Haddrill on Pickett.
McPharlin a few more weeks in the WAFL, and to return after the break against his old side.
This is more of a question than a statement. but is it possible that Grover will go for either Parker or McPharlin to come back in?

3 or 4 week ago yes , but he has been really good the last couple of games. Added to this I believe Shortmuir played a blinder today. Can anyone verify this?
Clive and Croadie IMO have been working up to some good form.
I would be more inclined to give Macpharlap a go and Action man a run at Subi as he has missed alot of footy.
Still glad I am not a selector. :)

I'd go with Haddrill on Tredrea, Woods on Cornes, Hayden on S. Burgoyne and Parker on Pickett.
Polak could also play on Cornes but I'd rather play him on Lade or Brogan when they rest in the forward line or as a loose man in defence in a similar role he had against Melbourne.
There is a worry that S. Burgoyne may be too strong for Hayden in the contests, being 8 kg heavier. Parker and Hayden could be switched but the last time we played the Roos Parker shut down Pickett so I'd give him another go.
P. Burgoyne has been spending more time in the midfield.

I agree it would be better to give him some match practise in the WAFL first but due to match-ups and the vast number of quality forwards at Port, it'd be handy if he was back this week.

I think Tredrea would be too good for Haddrill on the lead, I'd go with Woods.
Peter Burgoyne has been spending some time up forward and been kicking a fair few goals, if Hayden is on Shaun Burgoyne, the only other player I can see matching up on Peter Burgoyne is Parker, or maybe Walker.
But he is way more dangerous than Pickett so I would put Parker on him when he is playing forward. If Wanganeen plays up forward as well, who would we put on him? He has been in awesome form. He has been playing everywhere as well.

Woods on Tredrea would be an interesting matchup. He would easily be able to keep up with Tredrea on the lead but one out he'd have to avoid physical contact and use his athleticism to bring the ball to ground and win it from there. It would be a big risk, but it may well pay off. Whether Connolly decides to go with that match-up remains to be seen.
I tend to disagree to an extent about Haddrill not being quick enough for Tredrea on the lead. He isn't the quickest at the club but he is quick to react to his opponent making a lead and was able to keep up with most of Fevola's leads last week. He's not quick over long distances but over short distances he can keep up with most forwards.

Yeah, Peter Burgoyne is averaging just under 2 goals a game interchanging between the midfield and half forward. Walker would probably be a good match-up for him but he has been in fine form for the past few weeks and it's just a matter of whether we are prepared to sacrifice Walker's creativity from his game to try and shut Burgoyne down.
But he is way more dangerous than Pickett so I would put Parker on him when he is playing forward.
I don't know about that. When in form I'd say Pickett is just as dangerous than Burgoyne, if not more. He has a history of playing well against us but the last time we played North, Parker was able to shut him down.
If Wanganeen plays up forward as well, who would we put on him? He has been in awesome form. He has been playing everywhere as well.
Wanganeen will start off in the back pocket and will without doubt run forward of the play to become a dangerous forward option like he did last week. I wouldn't have anyone go off their direct opponent to take him when he goes forward but I'd rather play someone like Polak as a loose man in defence to assist our key defernders against Tredrea and Cornes and tell him to be wary of Wanganeen when he does run forward.
