View Full Version : We CAN upset the Saints

Bombers36

Call me an optimist but I can think of a few reasons why we can upset the Saints:

No Reivoldt
We beat them last year
We were pretty good against Port except for last quater which resulted in the 3 point loss
M.Williams back. I bloody hope Knights plays him this week - should have played him against Port
They are due for a loss
They have a couple of days less rest than us
We certainly are not without a chance here - lets hope Carlton gives them a real tough match tonight!!

I think we can win as well. We should knock out Gilbert, as we need that long option available when we run into trouble.

It's good to be optimistic, but a few things need to happen before we have a chance of an upset:

Hayes/Dal Santo/Montagna/Goddard/Gilbert all get reported tonight
Every Essendon player plays their best game of the season
The umpires are on our side
I just can't see it...

See if you can get a double on us beating the Aints then losing to Richmond. Would be at $10 or $15 I think.

We should knock out Gilbert

my supercoach team disagrees with this

Was thinking about starting a similar thread.

The main point for me is that the StKilda style of play suits Ess.

We are a hard team to lock down. With Roo out the St's seem to have put more emphasis on this lock down style of play. If we can play the game by our terms (fast ball through the middle) we have every chance to beat them.

Either way I am hoping for a great match.

If we can play the game by our terms (fast ball through the middle) we have every chance to beat them.

This is the key, the Western Bulldogs were afraid of the zone and changed their game plan, in the end it cost them the game. We need to back ourselves, and kick well.

Yeah we can beat the Saints but for the benefit of the club I hope we lose, the more wins Knights gets the greater the chance Essendon will honour his contract. A win would merely cover a gaping hole with a bandaid. Obviously a terrible way to think but I guarantee I'll be vindicated.

What we need to do, is give the ball to Fletch at every opportunity. Let him torp the sumbitch over their zone every chance he gets.

I agree with the OP. The one thing which sets St Kilda apart from the competition, especially in their current rugby style of play, is their tackling pressure. If we can break even with them there, our superior attacking prowess (no exaggeration whatsoever) will give us a huge chance.

Plus, every time I go to Essendon-St Kilda games with my St Kilda supporting mate (once - Rd 20 last year) we win. I'm going with him on Sunday. You can all thank me now.

Same here with Port. Until this year, I had been to 8 port games, and we lost all of them. I missed the one in 2004, and lo and behold we one. I stopped going a couple of years ago, and we still haven't beaten them!!!! :thumbsd::thumbsd:

And Kepler Bradley CAN win the brownlow.

But seriously I thinnk we are a fair chance. We need to back our selves and if we are struggling to get past the zone Fletch torpes down to Gumby and co.

Not so confident now that Slattery has been ruled out though...don't want Milne or Schneider getting on top. Fletch-->Milne, maybe.

St Kilda are getting destroyed and you'd think Lyon will be resting players in the last 1/4 in readiness for our game on a 6 day break.

That's what I hate about what our club has become. Scared to play a team after they've been pansted the week before. We should have a killer instinct and see it as an opportunity to get them while they're down.

Saints are a joke. Been that way for 130+ years and no 19 game winning streak will change that. We are Essendon. They are nothing.

Hate how the last few years we have beaten carlton, and made there fans suicidal only for it to almost be a prop up for their season. I wonder what would happen if they beat us instead.

**** this shit. St Blunder have shown they are absolutely vulnerable to a well-prosecuted speed & running game.

We match up well personnel wise, & game plan wise.

We have every chance of compounding the Stains pain.

As has been said, we do match up really well against them.

Now if we can just learn the lesson Carlton have shown us on how to break Stkilda's defensive setup by quick movement BY FOOT we have a chance. Carlton had 95 more kicks than handballs.

We got to run them stupid.

Dempsey, Atkinson, Jetta, Davey, Winderlich, Houli, NLM all need to have big games.

St Kilda are strong, skillful and well drilled. However without Nick, they rely on Milne and Kosi to kick goals, Kosi is average, Hooker should be fine. Milne is the one who will worry use, specially with slattery out.
Their defense is about supporting each other. Moving the ball quick and not allowing them to get their players back will be the key.

After tonight's St Kida game i think we should beat them. I just wish we were playing them tonight because if we did we would have definitely beat them. We have to include all the fast players in the team. We should win.. Hopefully our longer break helps.

100 tackles for another consecutive week would just crush their spirits. That's all they have going for them with the blond fella out, so if we ream them there, they have nothing.

Just an average side without Riewoldt, which is embarrassing given how good Goddard, Hayes and Gilbert are.

If we continue to butcher the ball we will not beat anyone...richmond included.
You can win all the stats you want but if you give up the ball they are all meaningless.
Carltank executed very well tonight...that and their speed is what did it for them.
Bring only the speed component next week and we will not win.

The Saints are playing crap since Roo went down. Would have preferred them to win last night though as dont like them on the rebound after a few ordinary displays....
They seem to be struggling to kick goals which suprises me when they have guys like Goddard, Milne, Sneider, & Kosi playing. I particularly dislike Milne who seems to come out to play against us. Not sure who we can match up on him with H.Slats out - maybe McVeigh??

St Kilda's forward line was woeful last night.
Kosi has no idea how to lead properly and add Schneider, McQualter, Gwilt and Clarke, and you have a fairly ordinary forward line. Milne is the only shining light - and only when the Saints are winning, otherwise he just goes missing.

St Kilda's backline also had no idea how to stop the small forwards. They had Gilbert, Dawson, Blake and Fisher, and Carlton's small forwards just ran rings around them. We should bring in Jetta this week and watch him, Davey and Zaharakis do the same.

I think McVeigh should play on Milne with Slatts out. Hocking should go to Dal Santo and wear him like a glove.

Gwilt isn't a forward. he played there for about 5% of the game, he's one our most improved defenders.
Our forward line was woeful because we couldn't kick straight, and we kept kicking to 2 on 1's or 3 on 1's. We didn't kick a goal from a set shot, but had plenty of opportunities.

and finally, I expect Dawson to be dropped. He has been pathetic this season.

Saints don't really need to tweak their gameplan too much, they just need to pull their fingers out. Obviously they're not the same mental team without Riewoldt out there leading them, which I suspect would have more of an impact on the scoreboard than the tangible benefits he also provides.

I'm betting St Kilda came out fired up last week, like they do every week. I'd rather play them in dismal form than in great form, & we have the capacity to do exactly what Carlton did.

Unless they are going to literally breathe fire, they'll be as pumped as they are for every game

Does anyone else in here think that it was poor form that nick Riewoldt wasn't with his team at the quarter time and half time breaks?

Especially at half time, wouldn't that have been a great opportunity for him to be the captain and try and gee his team up for a better second half. But instead he was with the commentators.

Unless I missed something, I thought that was very average. If Watson did that I would be pissed
