Well done to MK today.

And since there was a silly thread last week, surely this week deserves this thread.

Lost hooker, was quick to react by putting hurley down back, and pushing a ruckman forward.

Third quarter, left Ryder in the ruck, and played Hille in the forward line. 4 goals and proved to be the match winner.

Picked a fast team.

Played Myers in the guts most of the game.

Didn't resort to making Hocking play back pocket and let him play in the guts. :thumbsu:

This.. agree 100%! It seems MK is learning.. and not a moment too soon! Top job today from the coaches box. We had the right cattle in the right places to bring home the points.

Kudos to all.

I'd disagree here silk. With more scoring shots and possessions than us, St Kilda had the game there to win. They fell down doing the same things we're usually guilty of; too many handballs to players under pressure, then ferocious tackling bringing about a turnover. They also had a lot of 50's awarded against them, and the 2nd half legspeed of Jetta, Atkinson and Davey couldn't be matched.

What I hope Knighter picks up from here was how to arrest the momentum of a couple of opposition goals, and getting the ball out wide to space.

But sure, he's kept the wolves from the door a little longer with this performance

I think MK did a pretty good job tonight. Really pleased to see Ryder start in the ruck and Hille ruck later on, it just works so much better overall. I've never seen Hille look so dangerous up forward, could be really handy there in the future. He did a very good job on matchups in the midfield considering, the likes of Welsh/Dyson who normally play defensive roles were out. The Hurley move was a good one, although i think it was pretty obvious it needed to be done.

Not sure what other options we had regarding Hooker so i wouldnt count that as a big one. Was line-ball on the fwd set-up with Davey, Zaka and Jetta as the H/Fwds, and the big blokes playing deep. At times i thought it wasnt working but he stuck with it and created a heap of fwd pressure so thats a tick. I thought Myers was average and probably did his best work in defence.

Honestly I think we got lucky. Saints played poorly and we played better, but there's still a whole room for improvement.

Our pressure, however, was excellent.

Good job from the coaches though. Hurley down back was the right (if only) move, and Dempsey (even though he still isn't putting his body on the line enough for me), Myers, Jetta, all showed why they were in the team and played well in their positions.

Colyer still shouldn't be in the side, but he did some good things too.

Not really a genius, 95% of posters here on the Essendon board have been demanding Hille play forward and Ryder play no. 1 ruck.

Now, I didn't watch much of the first half but what I did see Hocking was playing in the back-half. It's interesting that you've said he played in the guts.

If we can keep this pressure football up throughout the season, expect a few more teams to play poorly and us to get lucky Lamaros.

Not really. If we don't improve our disposal we will get punished.

Saints were up on many important factors against us, inside 50s, scoring shots, possessions blah blah blah. The fact that they haven't sorted out their forward line doesn't mean that other sides will have dysfunction forward lines as well.

If we don't get it right good teams will punish us.

I do recognise that our pressure was excellent. But to have excellent pressure and still only win by a narrow margin against a dysfunction side... we need more than that.

We need to become reliable in our use of the ball, not just our pressure and tackling.

I don't want to be too pedantic, but I felt that St Kilda scored 4 soft goals (a couple assisted by the umpire) which made St Kilda look better than they really were compared to our guys.

The guy sitting next to me was hyperventilating and over revving so bad that his valves were bouncing, and I had to calm him down before he blew a gasket. :p

Yep. Just like Al Clarkson he's copped an enormous amount of **** for taking a different approach.

We are 5 from 6 against the sides with the clusters/rolling zones (St Kilda & Hawthorn). Any side that plays the zone holds no fear for me.

I still worry about Geelong and an in form Dogs because they have a similar style to us. We are closing the gap against that sort of side by being fast enough to takcle them into submission.

Hindsight tells us that it is a generally a good thing when a coach is doing something that everyone else isn't.

The draw has opened for us so hopfully we can attack the rest of the season.

Well done Knights and players.

The signs were beyond worrying, and I lost 90% of the faith.

Right now it appears that we've turned the corner, and if this is the case, I'll happily admit that I was no better than some I lambast for jumping on and off bandwagons.

I hope to hell that I can do this. :thumbsu:

Players covering space, instead of players? Upto 18 players in a half of footy in a grid formation, clogging up the space so there's no free players to kick to?

Not enough to turn.. but very very very happy with how the boys are playing and the energy! Our disposal looked much cleaner in the last couple of weeks and our running capacity seems to be able to cope as long as we "fist" slow it down for a couple of minutes each quarter.

The bulldogs looked really flat most of the match but IT WAS due to our pressure.. they just panicked all the time because they knew that 2-3 bombers would be hunting them..

Really like the structure and match ups.. loved Pears up the ground and Fletcher on Hall.. even though hall kicked 5.. I think Fletcher broke even in the battle at least...

Also the coaching decision to clearly play "wide" and avoid B Lake most of the game was simply sensational.. clearly the players had been instructed not to kick it high and long near him and it worked really well. Was very very impressed with this.

i didn't have your faith that we would win.. but I did like us with a 22pt headstart.. $2.60!!

but the best bit was the actual winning.. it feels so good to be actually mixing it with sides and being able to move it the length of the field with precision..

I actually had periods of the game where I didn't feel as though the turnover was "coming right up"... :thumbsu::thumbsu::thumbsu:

http://i215.photobucket.com/albums/cc285/bengooner4/zone.jpg

From a kick in, player where the yellow crosses are, leaving space where the blue circles are.

The idea is to get the kick-in to go to where the blue circles are, then everyone moves across to the side where the ball is, and puts the kicker under huge pressure. Once the ball gets a bit wider, there's often plenty of space behind the man on the mark, and Knighter has us (namely Stanton, Winderlich and Prismall) leading into that space, and gaining 20-30m until we can spot up someone to break from the middle.

Gumby is often leading along the boundary 50 or so metres from the man on the mark.

The game was won in the first 20 minutes of the 3rd qrt when the Bombers kicked 4 goals, Dogs 0 and the Dogs only had 4 tackles in that time .
The Dogs had approx 75 tackles on them last night , the av is 62 .
Speed also beat then .
A faid out in the last 12 minutes of the last qrt was nearly disastrious .
