View Full Version : England wallop Zimbabwe again!
England have won the 2nd Test against Zimbabwe in their 2 test series by an innings and 69 runs. England has now won both matches by an innings and finished both matches inside 3 days. This is concerning as ZImbabwe are supposed to be playing Australia and I'm thinking that maybe we should be playing them in Darwin as well.
The good news out of the test match (all there can be) was that England have finally after 100 years introduced a new Test venue in the Riverside, Durham's home ground.
England 416 (A. McGrath 81, A. Stewart 68, H. Streak 4-64)
Zimbabwe 94 (R. Johnson 6-33) & 253 (T. Friend 65*, D Ebrahim 55, S. Harmison 4-55, J. Andereson 4-55)

I find it strange though that there was no Test scheduled for Old Trafford this year. Even though there were two scheduled at Lords.

I guess this is a rare opportunity to mention Bellerive in the same breath as Old Trafford. Enjoy the Zimbo test Sydney-siders!

Old Trafford is currently having major devcelopment work done to it and the capacity is done to 13,000. The EWCB have decided to use some of the major county grounds instead. They also have to make London earn there keep. Last year there were two at The Oval so I think that from now on there will be two test every year in London for financial reasons.

What about the continued success of two of England's young fast bowlers?!!!

Actually Old Trafford are getting a wake up call from the ECB, bascially crowds have been falling there over the years & the ECB don't feel that Lancashire CC have done enough to promote the Tests & the game of cricket in general.
Bringing Durham into the equation is a kick up the arse for them & to some degree Headingley, though it was pointed out that if OT had got the first days' crowd that Durham got then everyone would be saying that it's another poor showing from them.
There has even been some conjecture that OT & Headingly might lose their Test ,match status.
It's not a case of the ECB using some of the major county grounds, there has been a definite aim to bring Test cricket to Durham for a while, they're the newest county in the Championship but even their admission to the comp was with the idea of Test cricket coming to the area.
As for Lord's having 2 Tests it's nothing new, whenever we have 2 touring sides over they always gets a Lord's Test, bascially I think they insist upon it but even if they don't I think we know that they'd be very disappointed not to get one.
In the old days when we only played 5 Tests a year one of OT,Headingly,Egbaston,Trent Bridge would always miss out whilst Lord's & the Oval always got a game so that's nothing new.
Does anyone know the last 'new' Test match venue in England?

Hehe, it's amazing that as a 21 year old aussie that you knew the answer to that I'm impressed because a lot of people would have had to use an internet search engine to coem up with the answer.
Well done you shoudl be proud of yourself as you obviously really know your cricket history.;)
So who played in the Test & what was the result.

So who played in the Test & what was the result. Well I know it was an Ashes test. I'd say it was an Australian victory, but not with much certainty. (Well that would be going with the balance of probabilities wouldn't it? :D) Actually I have a gut feeling it was an Aussie win, if by "result" you mean the wickets/runs margin, then NFI. ;)
I probably know Sheffield from always buying the ABC cricket mag. It usually has results by venue on the first page of the stats section.
For what its worth I tend to equate the English test venues somewhat with the Australian venues.
The SCG and MCG are the big two venues. (a la the London grounds)
Then there's the other four - Adelaide, Gabba, WACA, Bellerive. (Although the latter two (esp Hobart) are certainly a lot "newer" than any of Edgbaston/Headingly/OT/TB)
And then there's the one extinct venue, Brisbane's Exhibition Ground (had just the two tests), rather like Sheffield.
It's also interesting that just as England are introducing in a new Test venue in Chester-le-Street so too are Australia introducing Test cricket to Darwin and Carins.
We just need England to have a second new venue to keep that symmetry alive. :)

It's intersting that you make that comparison because I know what you mean but I wonder what it would be like if we compared the capacities, obviously the MCG is huge & dwarfs all the others but I'd guess that the Aussie grounds would be much bigger than the English ones.
I'm not sure of the capacities but I'd guess that both the SCG & Gabba hold more than Lord's & Adelaide & Perth maybe more than the Oval.

Well you might just get your wish;)
Hampshire's new ground which cost a few quid was built with the idea of staging international cricket, I'm not sure if there's plans to give them a one dayer yet but if they do then if it went well Test cricket may come in the future.

I know that Clem Hill got the highest individual score.
