When players such as Bickley, Hart, Smart and Ricciuto retire, who will be placed in the leadership group (ie. captain, vice captians) of the younger type players currently at the club?

Feel free to add to the list if I have missed any.

My pick, personally, is Begley. He's got the skills, work ethic, and character to one day take on a leaders role.

Well Tim Watson had James to be a future St Kilda captain but i'll be happy for him to be Adelaide captain!

Well i voted for Kenny Mcgregor but i rekon it could be Aidan Parker maybe Begley or Reilly. But Kenny for me.

Excellent post Radar ;)

Working on a new captain in say 3 to 4 years time, IMO there's only two of the ones you have suggested that could be the next AFC captain.

Kenny and Begley.

I do think though that you've missed two 23 year olds from whom the captain will very likely come. Massie and Stenglein.

Stenglein a near certainty.

Porthos, Macca19, PAfolwr - what are the season ticket prices like down at Alberton?

If Biglands started to do more around the ground i think he would make a good captain... he always gives all he has and, to me, he seems like the type of person that would make a good leader...

Stenglein a near certainty. I agree macca23 I think Stenglein is a certainty to be our next captain if he is still around. Begley also has some real leadership qualities and Massie puts his body on the line each and every week.

Stenglein as captain, Begley as vice-captain and Massie and one other as deputies.;)

BTW Radar its Trent Hentschel:p ;)

Stenglein would have to be a chance, not sure about Massie.

If he was a few years younger Mark Stevens would have made an exelent captain

Radar you have missed a couple potential names. Stenglein and Rutten have leadership qualities. Stengleinis just about a certainty for a captain's role next time around and Rutten was SA U18s captain. On the other side I don't think Smith, Parker and Mattner are leadership material.;)

I'm not sold on Stenglein being leadership material.

The AFC are Dave. Ayres has publicly nominated him previously as a likely future captain of the AFC.

He continues on playing all the way through the finals and who could forget his great effort against Melbourne when he finished the game with 9 clearences. The number of times he puts his body on the line suggests to that he is leadership material.

As macca23 said Ayersy and everyone else at the footy club rate him as a future captain. I think he would make a good one too.;)

I just don't see Stenglein as being the most forthright bloke - I don't think I've ever heard the guy speak. Plus he doesn't win a lot of ball, not at this stage of his career anyway, so its not as if he leads by example on-field like Bickley or Ricciuto.

Don't worry Dave. I've heard him speak and he's quite intelligent and literate!! :D

Because he's been played mostly as a tagger during his career it limits the amount of ball he gets himself. But he does all the hard team things a skipper should do.

Ayresy was planning to expand Stinga's role beyond that of a tagger this year, but injuries to players including Stinga have prevented this.

i've heard him speak quite a few times... such a nice guy! i'd say one of the nicest guys at the club, well once you get a few words out of him.

they had an article about him in the advertiser a couple of weeks ago in the footy friday section.. saying that, basically if he keeps up his good form he could well be a captain of the club in a couple of years. they mentioned how he had already captained a side, before he came to adelaide.. cant remember what else, but thats basically what it was saying.

Stenglein will most likely be captain after Ricciuto, unless McLeod squeezes a year or two in first.

Of those mentioned above, none have done anything yet to suggest they would ever be considered a captain. That might change but you have to become a regular in the team first or we may aswell nominate Ben Nelson.

Stenglein or Torney.

A good one would be Nick Riewoldt.

Don't know if the Saints want Ben Marsh though!!:D

Yeah, he can be captain of the Loveboat during the players revue... :p

As far as the club's concerned, I still see StiffyJC developing into a beefier version of Michael Long and becoming a legend. ;)

Yes i know i have missed a few...and I seem to be gettin pinned for it!! :(
But i sort of meant many years down the track, from the very young group. Not counting out Stinga though, i agree that he would be a fantastic captian for the club, he just must have slipped my mind..

I think Aidan Parker would be a great leader of our club, have you heard this bloke speak?? He is a really nice guy, very down to earth, and quite humble. He was featured on Simply Footy in the rookie watch last week and said that he would hate for someone to get an injury where he would get a game just because the team is short. That, to me, is such a nice thing to say.

I think once he becomes a regular, people will see how fantastic this guy's character is.;)

:D

Although I must admit he has improved and is becoming more reliable, but it'll be a while before someone convinces me that he should be the leader of the pack.

Three or four years is a long time.
John**** is not leadership material at the moment, but if he keeps improving the way that he has, in four years he could very well be it.
He has a high level of commitment, and in four year time he may be able to get that out of the others.

I think one of the problems with the Crows is that there isn't an obvious stand-out for future Captain.

I actually think the leadership there right now is a bit weak. Roo has done little as Captain. He occasionally inspires with some good play, but gives away too many free kicks with irresponsible tackles.

Macca's a great guy, but quiet and introverted, and sometimes goes missing during the game.

Stenglein seems good, but again, quiet. We always seem to recruit "nice" guys - maybe they need someone with a little arrogance. I'm sure that's why they didn't pick Pavlic - they chose Kenny instead!

I think Stinger would be a great captain. I think he has all the qualitys and I know the AFC regard him very highly.

I would also say that the super spunk James Begley is also a future captain. He was given big rapts when he first went to the Saints.

Nobody, but nobody will live up to Mark Bickley though. He is the captain of all captains. I love him dearly and if only we could clone him so we could have him forever.

Never a truer word said, MarksGirl-kbcrowgirl . Even though he hasn't officially been the captain for some time now, he has still been the leader IMO.

They showed vision of Bicks on Ch 9 tonight and he is definitely NOT going on next year. He said that he deliberately announced his retirement at the end of the year at a very early stage of the season to remove the temptation to go on. He wants to go out on a good note by having a good final year, and plays every game as if it is his last.

Geez we will miss him!!

Bugger it!!! Let's clone him!! ;)

Actually that could work....geez i did miss a few.

He is a very humble man, and quite friendly as well, which is always a good leadership quality.
