MOUNTAIN LIONS ON TOP OF THE WORLD

The Katoomba-Lithgow Mountain Lions registered a good win over the Mudgee Black Swans in their game last Monday.

In clear conditions the Lions had a big roll up of players and supporters on hand and began the game well, kicking two unanswered goals in the first term. Mudgee fought back in the second quarter but a rousing address by coach Brent Kelly at half time saw the Mountain Lions hit back in the third stanza.

In the third quarter the Mountain Lions rotated their bench allowing all players to get valuable on field experience.

Dave Bridgeland was best on ground with his strong runs through the midfield and also slotting through a goal. Dav Stritch showed strength to get down to the ball in the midfield and Sean Muir contributed all over the ground - his booming long kicks and strong tackling being a hallmark of his play. Chris Isles was everywhere in defence and was ably supported by the return of new father Ben "Dozer" Foster.

In the "Digger" Riddell Trophy for the Mountain Lions Best and Fairest Dave Bridgeland scored three points, Sean Muir two and Chris Isles one.

The Mountain Lions played entertaining flowing football and will be hoping to continue this form into the game against Orange this Saturday.

The game was followed by the Central West Australian Football League first grade clash between Charles Sturt University and the Mudgee Black Swans. This game was won comfortably by the Charles Sturt University Bulldogs. A number of Mounta9in Lions stepped up for Mudgee in this game and Mitch McCosker of the Mountain Lions kicked Mudgee’s solitary goal. Chris Isles also repeated his effort by backing up in the second game.

This Saturday the Katoomba-Lithgow Mountain Lions take on Orange Tigers at Katoomba Falls Reserve. The under 17’s start at 11am and the Seniors are from 1pm.

I moved from orange a couple of years ago. I had a few games for them too. Whats been happening lately? Is it a one sided comp? Who looks like the favourite? Any big name players in the mix? Is Timmy Byrnes still coaching the Tigers? And is it snowing confused confused up that way yet?

I know that the Mountain Lions no longer exist. They were caught in that no mans land of being too far away for Sydney clubs and Central West clubs alike, and were left with no one to play against. A couple of their guys moved down to play for Penrith but I don't know what happened to the rest of them.

You're right, they couldnt get into either at end of 2003 season, we(Jets)played them in a "friendly" and i use that term very loosely, great bunch of blokes, shame about them folding. Ugly jumpers tho(but if i could get one i'd wear it)

Bloody long way to travel if they were continue in the Central West competition with nowdays having to go to Young as well as Cowra and Dubbo. If they were to reform they would be much better placed in the division 2 of the Sydney AFL competition.

If the Sydney AFL were to allow a stand alone Second Division team again, it would always be good to have new clubs.
