After 10 long years, the time is right for the Sheffield Shield to return to Victoria.

Hopefully last years loss to Queensland will provide an added incentive to the Vics when the game begins this morning.

We might not have the most talented team on paper, but for the past few years, thanks largely to the coaching of John Scholes and the captaincy of Paul Reiffel, the bushrangers have played positive attacking cricket and played as a team.

I suppose many people are not really interested but I happen to regard the Sheffield Shield very highly. The Queenslanders have certainly deserved their current success after the many near misses of the past, but the time is now for the Vics.

It may not be Australia vs India, but I'm going to enjoy spending the next 5 days watching the Pura Cup Final (unless Qld bowl first on a GABBA green top) on c7.

Carn the Vics!

Yes Go the Vics. It will be tough, probably the hardest challenge is to beat Queensland up there. Lets hope for the best!

Let me ask Easty, who are South Aust. playing this week??

Yes not a great start. Probably the wrong move to bat. I will reserve judgement until after the Bulls 1st innings.

Great comeback by the Vics. 7/90 in the last session to trail by 66 on the first innings. Looked like it was going to be 266 at one stage. Mick Lewis got a 5 for for the first time and Hodge(!) was on a hat trick after taking wickets with the first 2 balls after tea, don't think I've seen that before. The Bushies will need a much better batting effort in the second innings though and will need to lead by 300 to have a hope as the wicket looks like it'll hold up ok.

Hey Easty, I remember you having a go at Victoria finishing last on the Mercantile Mutual Cup table. You might want to have a little look at the way the Pura Cup table looks right now. Hahahahaha.

We're still in there. 60-odd runs behind after the first innings is not all that good, but it could have been worse. The problem for us is that on a wicket where wickets aren't all that easy to grab, we want to leave ourselves lots of time to bowl Queensland out in the last innings, assuming we can set them a large-ish target. Because they can shut up shop any time they like and still win the cup. sometimes I wonder whether there shouldn't be an extra incentive to win the final - cash or whatever. Because it must be heavy going for anyone actually watching the game.

Better day for the Vics today. We are still the underdogs. We must have a lead of at least 280 to have a chance though.

Anyway, after day 3 i reckon Victoria will win.

there about 100 runs infront. If they get 200 in front, which they should they'll win.

The pressure chasing runs is immense. especially, in finals.

Just have to look back 1 week to that test match.

QLD dont have to chase any runs ! They only need a draw to win the shield, theres no pressure on them ! You are the ********

Quite a slow and boring day of cricket but the Vics are still in with a show.

Both sides have to take some responsibility for the lack of runs. The Queensland bowlers were content to bowl outside off stump all day and the Victorian batsman were not willing to take any risks and let them all go.

Still, we have a lead of around 106 runs with 4 wickets in hand. We will need Elliott to get on with it tomorrow. Regardless of what happens, we need to bowl Queensland out to win the Cup. A more aggressive day with the bat, with a possible declaration before tea has to be made (unless we are bowled out). The quicker we bat, the quicker we can get the Queenslanders in to bowl them out.

All in all, it is great to be able to say after three days of the final that we are in with a chance. The fact that the bulls only have to draw the match puts them at a big advantage, but we have nothing to lose.

You don't know anything about cricket do you.

Do you seriously think Queensland will bat for about a day and a half and not score 200 runs, which is the most likely scenario.

But say for istance, if Victoria bat for just about all of day 4 and set Queensland 350 in a day and a bit.

If, from that situatution, QUeensland try and bat for draw, Victoria will win the match. The biggest mistake in finals, is to try and play for a draw.

A perfect example:

Today in the Sydney Grade Semi Final. Easts scored 310 on the first day.
Balmain, only needing to draw to go through to the final, tried to bat out the second day. In the end, Balmain were dimissed for 125 with 2 hours to go.

The biggest mistake a side can make is to bat for a draw (unless of course, they need 500 runs in a session and 2 wickets in hand).

As as i stated in my above post, this is not neccesarily a good thing.

If Queensland attempt to bat out and draw the match, Victoria will win, garaunteed.

The pressure a side puts on themselves when they're not scoring runs is immense.

If i were a Victorian, i would be very happy tha Queesnlanmd have the temptation to try and bat out for a draw.

I tend to favour Queensland after day 3. They will be looking to bowl the Vics out for a lead of 180-200. Queensland bat almost all the way down, except for Dawes who's a bit of a rabbit. Also once their bowlers get into Victoria's tail, it shouldn't take long to dismiss them. Queensland has had the strongest attack all season, and the Vics have quite a tail with Davison, Inness and Lewis. Although the likely target will be 180-200, I wouldn't be surprised to see Bichel & co. make short work of the Vic tail and see them off with a target as small as 140-150.

WCE2000
26 Mar 2001, 20:16
if the target is 150, on the 'Gabba that's a piece of piss.

if it is 200, that is a different story. As i said the pressure chasing runs (especially in a final) is enormous.

I think we could be seeing one of the alltime great sheffield shield final's
