View Full Version : Shirley

When Rob Shirley was re-drafted last year, I was more than a little ticked off. I thought the bloke wasn't up to it, yet was re-drafted under the reasoning that he was a tagger and did the tough jobs the coach wanted. Fair enough, I thought, he's insurance for Stenglein.
Last weekend was the best opportunity for Shirley to get a game - no Stenglein, Crawford needs a shadow - and Shirley's still playing for the Eagles.
If Shirley's a tagger who can't tag, then why did we re-draft him? If he can tag, what's he doing on the sidelines while Stinger's out?

Very good points PrideOf. I have been wondering the same. He must be thinking that he will never get an opportunity missing a game with Stinger out. Would be a better option as a run-with player than Mattner IMO.
What's Shirley's form for the Eagles been like?

I was surprised that Shirley didn't get a game but I thought that Ayersy would use Goodwin as "part tagger" on Crawford to get back to some form.:(

good to excellent. Well then I agree, he should have been the drop-in replacement for Stenglein. Perhaps not against Geelong, who don't really have any tag-worthy players, but certainly against Hawthorn.

I actually wouldn't mind going into this weeks match with 2 taggers. We are 2 premier midfielders short and it wouldn't be such a bad idea if we had Stenglein and Torney/Shirley run with Yze and Johnstone.;)

Reportedly, Yze is carrying an injury and struggling while Johnstone is out of form and not performing. Expect them to gather 60 possies between them this weekend, so maybe 2 taggers is the way to go. Shirley is mostly useless but since it will be his very, very last chance, he might be the one player in our midfield willing to go in for the hard ball, put his body on the line and chase, for 100 minutes.

What about the forgotten man at the Crows ? Would Ben Nelson be considered for a tagging role? He's not much chop agreed, but could he be any worse than Shirley. Also I noticed Jacob Schuback, played for West Adelaide reserves and kicked 4 goals, if the match committee decide to go all out attack he may even get a game. Look at Scott Welsh, he was back after just one reserves game !.

Schuback needs to crack the senior side for West Adelaide before getting into the Crows side even tho he has been in Westies Reserves best for the past month. The difference between Welsh and Schuback is that Welsh is in our best 22 and experienced campaigner where as Schuback is an untried rookie.;)

Shirley's no champ, but he has never embarrassed himself at AFL level when he has played, and his current SANFL form is excellent.
He was redrafted at the end of last year to play more AFL games as a tagger, which is his role, so that Stenglein could move up a notch.
Which only makes his non-selection to play on Crawford an absolute nonsense. I would go so far as to say that the presence of a close tagger like Shirley might just have been the difference between success and the actual result of failure.

Tend to agree
It just makes no sense to re-draft him and then not use him in the only role he can play in the AFL.
Shirley at least has a footy brain and I think I would prefer him to Miraculous Marty Mattner as this stage.
However if Stinger is fit this week, its a moot point.
Ins Clarke Burns Stenglein
Outs Marsh Goodwin and Mattner

Clarke and Stinga have been passed fit to play. Ronnie has to wait another week.
Looks like Mattner survives another week, unless Shirley does actually get a game for a change.

According to Ch10, Clarke has been ruled out.
Ins: Stenglein, Shirley, Hentschel, Smith + 1 other
Outs: Goodwin, Marsh
I expect Shirley will play as he is missing from the Eagles team along with Hentschel. So look like 3 changes. Perhaps Mattner has been omitted.

+ 1 other is Nelson.
For the Dees, both White & Ward have been ruled out. Jolly & Walsh were part of their additions, so I expect they will be their ins.

Dear Gary, thanks so much for reading my post on BigFooty.
Other changes I would like for this week's game include ..... ;)
