3 of my favorites are (in no particular order):
No More Tears (Ozzy Osbourne) - Zakk Wylde(sp?)
Shock Me (KISS) - Ace Frehley
Wherever I May Roam (Metallica) - Kirk Hammett
I'm sure there are a plethora that spring to mind. What are your favs?

Eric Clapton - 'While My Guitar Gently Weeps' Pure Six String Emotion
Jimmy Page - 'Stairway to Heaven' Perfection. Perfect note choice, perfect inflection, perfect initial lick, perfect end lick, perfect duration. I think he might have surprised even himself with this one. Perfection.
Jimi Hendrix - 'All Along the Watchtower' Several approaches and styles in one song. All of them complimentary of the progression.
EVH - 'Eruption' Helped start a craze that I wish would re-erupt.
Ritchie Blackmore - 'Lazy' 'Highway Star' Listen and learn.
The Ramones - ......just kidding. ;)
Kurt Cobain - 'Smells Like Teen Spirit' Excellent, very simple use of the voice melody of the tune. Unfortunately, that's all he was capable of. Most unfortunately, it's all that the multitude of Post-Nirvana derivitive bands are capable of as well.
SRV - Just about all of it. More listen and learn.
Ted Nugent - 'Stranglehold' Nuge at his melodic best. Not at all tiresome for such a lengthy grab.
I'll stop here. I could go on and on.
Peace,

let there be rock
highway star
I've always liked the guitar solo in Pink Floyd's Time. That was my favourite song for a few years and that solo was a big part of the feeling that went with the song.
Garry Moore has one of the best ever solo's in a live performance of Wishing Well. I'ts was probably the most striking at the time that I've heard. He's very good with guitar solo's.
Pink Floyds Comfortably Numb is another that springs to mind. Again one of my favourite songs of the past.
There are plenty more but these 3 just jumped out at me.
Frank Woodley, on the episode where they go on Starsearch.
Ian Moss on Georgia from Barking Spiders. Heard it 1000 times and makes my hair stand on end every time.
Hmmm top of the head.....
Little Wing
Sultans of Swing
Another Brick in the Wall
Oops forgot Telegraph Road

Always With Me, Always With You - Joe Satriano
Repsect the Wind - Van Halen

Why Clapton? Why not Harrison? It's Harrison's original and IMO does it way better, it's his song so he knows the emotion of the song better than Clapton.

Erhh.. I think he means that.
The Beatles original, on the 'white album' is played by Eric Clapton.
George Wrote and sung it, but Eric played the solo on that album.
But yeah, that solo is the first ever that springs to mind.
Midnight I feel is Jimi Hendrix's best solo.

Yeah but it's Harrisons song. He wrote the lyrics and music just because he didnt play the guitar on the White Album doesnt mean it's not his song.
Harrison's acoustic version is better IMO because it's Harrisons song. Just my opinion though.

For a bit of current day guitar wizardry check out 'Ball & Biscuit' on the new White Stripes album Elephant. Jack White nails 3 great guitar solo's during the 8 minute song. Little wonder Jeff Beck invited Jack to play with him.

It's Harrison's song, but the thread is about solos. I love the way Clapton played that solo. Also, OMH had asked, "What are your faves?" So I listed mine. Jod, if you can get him to edit that to instead read, "What are Jod's favs" .....I'll change it to anything you like. ;)
Peace brother,

I like the intro to Garden of Eden from the Eddie & the Cruisers 2 soundtrack by John Cafferty and the Beaver Brown Band.
I'm surprised nobody's mentioned Tommy Emmanuel. I guess he'd be classed as instrumental rather than guitar solo but I love Guitar Boogie and Tequila Slammer from his album Dare to be Different.

I saw him in concert a couple of years back and he's pretty amazing. I like his version of Classical Gas alot and some of the stuff he did with Chet Attkins is really cool but no so big on solos.
As for my favs:
Mark Knopfler: Too many to mention everytime he picks up a guitar it's more than amazing.
Anything from any Deep Purple song, Way before my time but my dad hammered them into me.
Eric Clapton: The early version of Layla, Wonderful Tonight, There's a live version of Running on Faith that's just amazing and many, many more.
Nirvana: Too many to begin (big fan)
Gary Moore: Still Got the Blues
Joe Satriani: Always With Me, Always With You
The Eagles: Hotel California, Life In the Fast Lane, I love the into
Pearl Jam: Yellow Ledbetter
Van Halen: Respect the Wind
Steve Vie: The guitar duel from the movie Crossroads, amazing.
Little band called Babylon A.D. that no one has heard of has some nice solos, Same goes for Sleeze Beez and Tesla.
Too many more to list but for recent songs Like a Stone by Audioslave has a really cool solo, Homesick by The Vines is sweet too.

Hmmmm
Only guitar solo that springs to my mind is Riders On The Storm, not sure who is the guitarist, Robbie Krieger maybe?
Joe Camilleri (Icehouse) Dont Believe Anymore = Best Saxophone Solo ever though
:D
Has anyone ever heard the 'live' version of 'Sultans of Swing', in which Knopfler goes from normal, to double, to triple time in his guitar solo? Extraordinary!
I'm surprised nobody has mentioned 'Satisfaction', that was Brian Jones, I think. Surely the catchiest riff ever written?

(Respectfully) Satisfaction is Keef's riff. Thread is about solos as opposed to riffs.

Donald "Buck Dharma" Roeser of the Blue Oyster Cult plays an awesome solo on the live version of Seven Screaming Dizbusters on the On Your Feet or On Your Knees album.
Ron Asheton's wah-wah freakout at the end of Little Doll on the first Stooges album is awesome.
Deniz Tek's "Hawaii Five O" solo on Radio Birdman's Aloha Steve and Danno is also a favourite of mine.

For me, anything from the Edge (U2) is great...... every time I hear the starting chords and that little solo bit at the start of "Pride (In The Name Of Love)" I get goosebumps! And their other songs, where he just cuts loose and flies.... it's awesome!

Two more of Eric Clapton's assorted best...
* "Sunshine of Your Love" (Cream)
* "Little Wing" (Derek and the Dominoes)
In the case of the latter, yes, I know it's Jimi's composition, and his version isn't bad. But Eric's version brings a tear to the eye, it's so damn good. :D
It's obscure, but the solo at the end of Sever, on 311's 1999 album Soundsystem is pretty handy.
Anything that Leslie West played in Mountain.
( common question: Mountain? jeez..... who are they? never heard of 'em).
Any Di(k Dale Guitar solo, but in particular Peter Gunn, Misalou, and King of the Surf Guitar.

and don't forget the LATE RANDY RHOADS on CRAZY TRAIN (Ozzy Osbourne) deserves an honourable mention....sends a shiver down my spine everytime... R.I.P. RR

Exactly what drugs are the people nominating Nirvana on?
The thread is about solo's not about topping yourself.
My vote goes to anything by:
Tommy Vetterli
Mike Amott
Bill Steer
John Petrucci
James Murphy
Jeff Waters
Oasis - Live Forever
Oasis - It's Getting Better Man
Stone Roses - Sally Cinnamon
