View Full Version : Do we owe Port a thankyou?

I was never much one for believing teams need to have a loss at any particular time, especially when the season was at 2-4 like ours prior to the Port match, but that loss seemed to have triggered something.

We now have application across every line, a willingness to run both ways, we have guys getting over to help their team mates, the tackling has been ruthless.....

... and it's all happened since that Port loss. Could it have been the catalyst or am I just reading too much into it?

The Pies loss hurt for sure, then we beat an ordinary Hawks team convincingly, then a tight loss to Port gave the guys the reality check needed after the Hawks win, something to tell them you need the same attitude and commitment to the game plan and each other no matter the opposition.

I guess we'll know more in a fortnight as historically when we travel we don't bring that intensity (even though our recent record at the SCG is good), and Geelong are playing great footy.

I reckon that the Collingwood game was the one that spurred us into action. Since then we have played pretty tough and committed football. We have gone 4-1 since. The loss to Port was unfortunate but we still dominated all the key stats, just our finishing was a bit off that day and theirs was superb on that particular day so they were able to pinch it. Lets not forget we had something like 100 tackles again against Port, so it's not like we didn't turn up we just couldn't finish the job.

Fair point blitzer regarding the KPIs in the Port game, but I guess I was getting at whether we would've had the same intensity subsequently had we beaten Port? We have a recent history of not stringing wins together very well and it was a game we were expected to win.

It seems nothing is being taken for granted now. We've knocked off 2 decent sides and had the Richmond game won before they knew what was happening.

I know I'm talking hypotheticals as we'll never know the real answer, I have just been questioning the turn around. At the same time I'm certainly enjoying the ride though.

Fair point about the Port match, it was a wake up call for sure. We had one period in that match were we fell asleep and it cost us. I do think the Collingwood game was the change though, I heard Jobe kept the lads in the rooms after Knights spoke to them and tore them to shreds, if true, it seems like he got through to all of them. Since then we have been a different unit.

If true, I love hearing this. Great leadership from a bloke who would've been in just his 5th game as skipper.

I think it was the Collingwood game, but I'll be ****ed if I'm thanking those mongrels, so Port will do just fine. :)

No, its going to be tough to make finals from 5-5,,, if we miss the finals by a game or percentage you will be spewing you thanked port... i say wait till seasons end,

however carlton, melbourne and the tigers can thank us as we obviously softened up the power for them to all get wins against port since they beat us!

We really should have been 5 in a row by now.

6-4.

Port? Hell no.

Collingwood? No.

Those in the club who made everyone get their shit in order after the Collingwood game? Yes.

You won't learn shit from Port. Awful club, awful team ethos.

It was the loss against Collingwood which highlighted the gross difference in mentality both teams had. Pies were as sharp as a tack (and have been pretty much all season). It's when we stopped trying to dick around with the minor aspects of our gameplan and really focused on having each player mentally drilled like a soldier. So far so good.

The thing we've got to learn, and aren't learning (though I'm really happy with the team's form) is that we can't full asleep for even 1/2 a quarter. Maybe it'll take a 4 goal lead at 3 quarter time turned around on us for us to figure that one out.

Thankfully, it hasn't mattered, but our percentage should be well over 100, and would be if we hadn't fallen asleep 2 games in a row in the final quarter.

**** those ferrals from Alberton, don't owe them shit. Stole Wanganeen, Choco as an assisstant, Adam Kingsley, Cummings, Forster-Night, Cockatoo-Collins and of course Jay Nash. Our club would be in such a better state had ALL of those guys stayed.

It's because of that "slow the game down to run the clock" bullshit they keep doing when they think they've got a good enough lead.

Whenever the players think we have the game sewn up and think the clock's almost done, they put the ball in the air and chip it sideways. It pisses me off because THIS is when we turn it over and concede goals... and when you concede one goal, your confidence lowers with the next... and the next, and the next... we're lucky there IS a clock to begin with.

They really need to learn to be precise and accurate when kicking the ball before they think they can run down the clock with 3 minutes to go!

Instead of doing this when we're 5 goals up, we should keep attacking. Attack, attack, attack. What good is it risking goals kicked on you when you're not trying to do the same to the opposition?

Other than that, everything's good so far. But it only takes one small thing to **** everything up.

100% agree :thumbsu:
It's a strategy that annoys me no end.

Also, you'll be pleased to know CMC that I think I'm willing to concede looking at my hat.
