Today's result was as frustrating as any of the losses in the last three seasons. Obviously Sydney in their backyard is a tough assignment for any side and they got the better of us.
What stood out today was the versatility shown by two more big bodied players. Myers and Hocking both played roles as key defenders today and did it with aplomb. While things looked like they were balanced on a knife edge both Myers and, in particular, Hocking stood up in the absence of two or our first choice key defenders and showed that ultimately they can be relied on to play roles as defenders.
Hocking did an excellent job on Goodes and Myers found himself on Jesse White, Playfair and Rohan (I think was the smaller one) and held his own. Hopefully both can be used as midfielders to help out Jobe with their size and strength.
Hurley had another solid game down back and his decision making and left foot kicks in the conditions were really quite excellent. Obviously the number 18 is just as good at the other end of the ground.
Hooker will primarily be the other key defender with Pears (who could play on ball or at least as an attacking half back) but can go forward and take a nice mark, and can play a relief role in the ruck (although I don't really like it).
Throw in the dynamic ruck duo of Hille and Ryder both of whom can kick multiple goals forward and the extreme size and athleticism of Gumbleton and there is an exceptional core of key position sized players who can perform multiple roles.
May have forgotten about Fletch...oops.
I guess what I am saying is that it WE HAVE the structure that clubs build premierships on.
As a side note (to this thread) with development of Howlett (although he faded again), Melksham, Zaharakis and Jetta we are going to have the gound level players.
