View Full Version : Geelong prime for the plucking
Cant help but think we have a big chance to upset the cats this week.
last time we played them we were a goal in front at 3 quater time, and they will be missing a few players that did well against us that game including Enright, Corey, Ottens, Mooney, Scarlett.
Hawkins, Ling, iPod & Rooke are all also in doubt - thats some big names there....
Hille injured not such a blow seeing Ottens is out, & Ryder can hold his own against Blake in the ruck & maybe Bellchambers can come in to chop out given hes had two BOGS at Bendigo. Hocking to tag Chapman, Welsh to Ablett.
Fletch & Stanton provide a couple of big INS for us releasing Hurley forward to tag team & hopefully create havoc with Gumby forward. Id bring in Reimers & Dyson to add some pace, and if the likes of Watson, Jetta, & Davey can fire we are more than capable of causing an upset.
Comon Dons - you can do it!:thumbsu:

Me too Vass- I'm also looking forward to the battle of the coaches boxes. Knights and his crew will be up against some shrewd operators this week.
yeah - Im not sure if all those players named will be out - but they certainly do have some key OUTS including their Scarlett & Mooney.
I just checked the odds - we are $4.50! I know the Cats are good but $4.50 in a two horse race is not bad. I think Im gonna invest a little bit at those juicy odds...!!

There not bad odds. Hopefully you guyz can really stretch them, stretch their hammies, and win.

Hille out will hurt, it would be a great win to redeem the disapointment of last week, but i think we are feeling are little bruised also.

I would agree with the OP.
Missing from when we played you in round 1 will be Ottens, Corey, Scarlett, Hawkins, Mooney, and possibly Pods too. Our key forwards could well end up being West and Gamble, not exactly much to write home about.
That said, if guys like Chapman and Johnson etc stand up, we could well still be in with a chance, but this is your best chance to beat us that you've had in the past 3-4 years. I like the way the Bombers play footy, and it will be an entertaining game, so even if we lose, as I am expecting, I will still really enjoy it.

If gary ablett still has that lump on his head they should count that as an extra player.

We have been given some good news with both Pods and Enright being given reprimands by the match review panel, hence they are free to play on Saturday night.
Pods is still in doubt with a groin injury though.

What's up with Mooney?
He got his foot caught in a tackle type contest and injured his ankle in the first quarter, and played the rest of the game hobbling on one leg in the square (which meant Pods had to go play up the ground). Had a shot for goal in the last and could barely make the distance from 25, so I'd say he's buckley's chance to play, whereas the jpod is probably more 50-50.
Hope that answers your question.

Been talked up as chances and failed too often in recent times.
That said, I'll be there cheering the boys on.
Prime for the plucking? Hmmm ... tbh I think that despite their injuries they've got this time round, we still had a better chance knocking em off last time when half their list was under done as part of their "September Ready" strategy.
Pros
-Injuries
-Cats travelling back from the West
-Etihad
Cons
-It's Geelong stupid (to adapt Paul Keating's lovely line)
-A few injury concerns ourselves

I think you may be undervaluing our backline even without Scarlett. Also our small forwards have huge potential.
I see it:
we win in the backline, mids and are even in the fwds and u prolly win in the rucks with Ryder being better around the ground. Either way like a fellow Geelong supporter said I enjoy the way ur boys play and am looking forward to a good free flowing game.
Cats by 19 in the end though

Would be a better chance if their key forwards were playing, small forward lines always tear us up.

Interesting call. Looks like Pods will be ok to play, so only one genuine tall target in the forward line. Expect to see Ablett back there a reasonable amount.
Shaping up as good game, best of luck.

With the way our back line plays (Fletcher, Dempsey and Hooker particularly), we aren't really that good at shutting players down one on one, more so getting the third man across to cut off space.
With key targets its easier to identify where the ball will most likely be kicked. The teams that have really scored easily against us over the last few years are Port, Kangeroos, and Western Bulldogs. Before Hall none of them have had a dominant forward target.

Chapman (as always) looms large. Gablett will kick a few, but IMHO Chappie will be the one to take the game away from us. Don't see their talls as a threat. All midfield and smalls even more than usual.

Prefer playing them at the G. Geelong look to be limping into the break similar to us. From all reports Mooney won't take the field and J-pod is in a race to prove his fitness.

I agree yet I disagree.
The Pod has shown his quality this year and is to be respected. That said, you do have some very quality tall defenders, and without any other tall forwards of note, he will get a lot of attention which will make it hard for him. That said he rarely gets outmarked so hopefully he can bring balls to ground where stokes byrnes and trav can do some damage.
It is right to say our midfield is still fairly in tact if Ling plays, and Ottens being out is counterbalanced by Hille being out.
I still worry about the forwards though. I have a feeling Gazza will play a fair bit there as he's such a good mark for his size, and it will be interesting to see who you send to him.
For me, without our depleted forward line, much depends on which of the jekyll and hyde stevie johnson turns up. If he's on, we are still a good chance to win, but if not, then I think it will be hard for us.
I still think you guys are a big show to win this one and it should be a good match.

Bomber said today that Mooney is unlikely but Pods will play if he's reasonably fit because we need one guy over 6ft, so it sounds like he'll line up, surrounded by smalls.
Pears to Pods, Hocking to Chapman, McVeigh to Johnson, Fletcher to Ablett if he plays forward. Atkinson/Dempsey/Slattery (should he play) to take on the likes of Varcoe/Byrnes/Stokes.
I recall Fletcher tearing Phil Matera a new one a few years back and he's beaten smalls many times in his career. Could be worth a crack, if it doesn't work then swap Spike and Fletch.

Haha, i miss the days when we were so good i could go into a game knowing i'd enjoy it if we lost a close game!
Kudos to the cats, they're awesome and i love watching them, but unfortunately with us being on the edge of the 8, if we get close and lose it will be getting hard to take after our last 2 losses!!
we need the week's break this week and we need it to last 2weeks, so your chances are very good, no doubt. Think they would have been ok even if we had a fullish list, your team is on the up and enjoyable to watch, the type of team I don't resent losing to.
I'm not particularly confident but i agree we have some kind of chance of winning this.
It will be very interesting to see who Knights goes with against their key threats. I wouldn't mind seeing Hocking play on Chapman, at least he's got the big body and he's hard to move out in marking contests. I think if G Ablett plays forward then either Fletcher/Mcveigh plays on him, if in the midfield then probably just Welsh tags. Not sure who will be playing on Stevie Johnson who has carved us up in recent games although seems to be in poor form at the moment.

I think for the first time in ages we have the luxury of putting a tall defender on Steve J. If Hooker gets up, I'd put him on SJ and use Fletcher as 3rd man up in marking contests. If Hooker doesn't get up, put Fletch on him McVeigh on Byrnes, Hocking on Chapman, Dempsey on Stokes.

It's a mini final for Essendon, not for Geelong.
If Essendon don't come out firing then we don't deserve to take any part in September.

I only rate us a chance depending on what type of game Ryder has, if we can break even with their mids we could give it a fair shake. Also think they will have more trouble matching our small forwards than us matching theirs.

Davey & Jetta have been really good the last month, and Zaha's bobbed up pretty consistently every game. Certainly playing well enough to keep their defenders honest.
Geelong are usually at their most dangerous when they have some of their better players outs.
If we can bring our highest intensity type of game then I think we can get over the line, if we don't we will get blown out of the water.

Well being Geelong players they were never going to be suspended. But anyway, I don't hold any sort of hope at all. May just be my pessimist side but I just can't see it.

Actually I think both sides will have equal trouble matching up on the other side's small forwards, and it should make for an entertaining game.
