There was a video released a while ago that was labeled 'Mortal Kombat Rebirth trailer'. Since then its had shitloads of views on Youtube and alot of exposure. Today I read that it was in fact not a trailer, but a pitch that was being made to Warner Bros. to have an R-rated Mortal Kombat movie. From ComingSoon.net:
The short is directed by Kevin Tancharoen, the director of last year's Fame, and features a cast that includes name actors like Michael Jai White (Jax), Jeri Ryan (Sonya Blade), Matt Mullins (Johnny Cage), Lateef Crowder (Baraka) and Ian Anthony Dale (Scorpion) with fight choreography by Larnell Stovall.
As a kid this was one of my favorite video games, and while the orignal movies were fun, they were by no means good. This new video though makes me feel funny in my pants, take a look:

I really do hope they make this. :thumbsu:

not a laughing stock.... the first MK was one of the better videogame movies... was just abit of fun
not sure wtf happened with the second though *cringe*
Wow! That is so freaking awesome!
Really hope they make it and give it a "Dark Knight" treatment to relaunch this movie.

Looked pretty cool.
Lack of Liu Kang was lame though.
Apparently it took 2 days to record that short film.
Whoa, that was awesome.
Hopefully they release this as I am a huge MK fan.
There is a new game coming out aswell. I made a thread about it in the video game section. Includes a video. :thumbsu:
Looks drool worthy.
That said stick a Mortal Kombat label on anything and I'll get sucked in :(

facepalm at baraka synopsis, what a crock. Wonder if they will put any of the non human characters in such as kintaro or motaro.

although it will be cool being a real life gritty movie ala sin city/ dark knight, I still don't know why films can't have that "fantasy" element with monsters etc.

There's nothing wrong with that element, but IMO it would make the movie look way more childish and less appealing especially when you consider how the first two looked with the whole fantasy element.
Gritty and 'real' looks to be an excellent turn for Mortal Kombat, and it will also make sure that kids who liked this back when it was really popular are interested in the new take on it.
I personally wouldn't go watch another PG-13 MK at the movies, would probably just catch it on DVD if I was ever bored, an R-rated version though is something I would be interested in.

Eh, looks okay.
I don't know why they're basing it around Scorpion. But whatever. If he just walks around harpooning people it'd be pretty awesome.

This movie looks like it has massive potential. But I would have liked it so that Baracker shaved his head to keep it close to look like the game character.

Looks interesting, could be a good one. So that video was done by a fan that wants to get involved in making the next MK movie?
Bit like Final Fight isn't it?
Also, when did Baraka have dreads? I always remember him being bald.

Would be a fair effort if they got Michael Jai White to star in it wouldn't it?

Don;t know who he is. :p I'm no film buff. :D

B - C grade actor mostly known for action/martial arts roles, fairly sure he played Spawn in the film adaption.
It wasnt a fan as such who made the clip fairly sure it was a director who thought he would have more luck pitching the movie with that clip rather than with a written script.

I heard that MK: Devastation was the next movie in line for 2013. Hope they make this though.

That looks seriously f**king cool. I can't see how they could possibly not agree to make it considering some of the dross that gets the green light these days (assuming the script is reasonably solid of course).
I'm a big fan of this 'gritty, real' phase going through Hollywood at the moment.

On a semi-related note, one character I'd really like to see given a dark makeover is Spiderman. My favourite superhero as a kid but I despise the camp, kiddie feel they've given to the movie franchise so far.
I know he isn't exactly the darkest, most hardcore superhero going around but surely there's enough potential demons there that a skilled writer/director could do justice to a proper adult version.
Well yes, I enjoyeed that. :thumbsu:

Looks friggin terrible. If that was made it could be even more cringeworthy than MK:A.

I don't know heaps about comics but I do know that the heart of the Spiderman story is the fun, teenage/young adult slant to it. You can't really take that down the dark and gritty route.
Superman was always like pure and noble.
Batman on the other hand was always dark and gritty... which is why BB and TDK worked so well in that method.
So the mini series of this has kicked off.
Here is the first episode.

Decent enough start I thought. Need to give it time. Hard to pull off in 12 minute episodes. Basically only Jax, Sonya and Kano in that episode. And Stryker?

Only 12 minutes in length? Could have made it longer. Must admit, I did enjoy it.
They're getting shorter, is this series any good?

Yeah they are getting shorter. It's better then the movies I reckon.
The third episode is out aswell which features Johnny Cage. :thumbsu:
Yeah just about to watch the Johnny Cage one now.
