Just because something has a lot of history and the whole world plays it ,does that make it the best game in the world as we are so often told ?After watching a few of the games on SBS IMO a big NO.Pomp and ceremony and large ,noisy passionate crowds aside the game is as boring as bat $hit.Hardly any goals scored (accept when someone is playing Australia),players feigning injuries what is so "beautiful" about it?Give me something more than "it's got to be good because it's played all over the world " so is chess but i wouldn't get up all hours of the morning to watch that either.Got to admit ,that goal by that Brasilian today was brilliant ,but it's just one goal ,Fevola and Buddy Franklin do that every week 2 and three times a game.
Got nothing against soccor lovers but they've got to realise that here in Australia we have the AFL ,the NRL and the Wallabies and as a spectacle the "world" game doesn't rate even if it is the world cup.If you don't believe me watch a replay of the last qtr of Collingwood Vs Melbourne on Monday and then later on in the night when you're ready to go to sleep ,watch a replay of Netherlands vs Denmark you won't make it through the first half.

I love sport, all sport. I usually enjoy watching soccer, but that's because I watch the arguably more exciting version of the sport, namely English football. I look forward to the World Cup every 4 years, in fact, I've taken 3 weeks off work to watch as much as I can, amongst doing other things. That said, this has been a deplorable World Cup and highlights most of what is wrong with the sport and FIFA. South Africa 2010 won't be encouraging many new supporters to the sport.

The one shining light, apart from Australia making Germany look good, has been Brazil. North Korea played well above their lowly ranking yesterday but Brazil were incredibly impressive to watch. They conjure moves that no other team could imagine. It doesn't always pay off, and they don't always win the World Cup, but when the purists talk about 'beautiful football', think of Brazil. The other thing that greatly impressed me was the Brazilians' fair play. I didn't see them once complain or remonstrate, maybe it was because they knew North Korea would be a walk in the park (except that it wasn't).

So my advice is watch Brazil's next two games against the Ivory Coast and Portugal.

brazil remind me of geelong, its beautiful and attacking, you're always a chance because its kinda open, but they normally just outclass their opposition

italy more like st kilda

Once we are out of the group stage the games improve in quality. The World Cup is fantastic. The acting does give us the shits - I kept hoping Mr T would turn up in his tank

why bother watching games with no stars, unless u got a bet.

Spain v Swiss was the first full game i watched during the WC, coz Spain are exciting to watch and they didnt disappoint. pity they lost though

looking forward to the latter stages of the cup

........... boring!

:D:D

Yer, I dont mind the World Cup, but this one for some reason havent watched any of it thus far. Woke up Sunday morning 5.30am, took one look at the scoreline and went right on back to sleep. :D

This weekend game is on midnight, much better timeslot.

But yeah in general I agree with OP. AFL >>> daylight >>>> soccer >>>>> rugby. (Sorry but soccer is way better than shithouse rugby..)

At least its only on SBS, and in the middle of the night, and 10 pages back in the papers (making way for real footy) and i am having a 4 week sabbatical from SEN, so i dont mind as its easy to just ignore.

i disagree....i think rugby is a better game than soccer. when in possession of the ball the idea is to make cracks in the wall of the opposition defense. and i like the huge hits in rugby and guys like falaou flying over a pack at the try line and billy slater doing a blind turn and running the full length of the field makes rugby better than soccer for me. plus rugby fights are great.....not a great thing to see for kids or parents looking for a sport for their kids to play which is where basketball and soccer are smashing AFL and rugby in junior participation rates plus growing popularity

I find the excitement is building with many teams under pressure to kick goals.

If you don't kick goals you go home, simple as that. That's what makes it good.

There has been plenty of great goals kicked and some stellar attacking football has already been on show from teams like Germany, Brazil and Argentina.

I think there are many of the worlds great players on show that I wouldn't normally get to see not having pay TV.

I take offence to this thinly veiled assault on chess, the world board game.I've got nothing against chess in fact i've got nothing against "football" either ,i myself love test cricket and could easily sit through five days in a row in the MCC it's just you won't here me try and tell anybody that test cricket is a great spectacle ,it's not in fact if you haven't been brought up with it i'd imagine it would be as boring as hell.I just take offense to people from differing ethnic backgrounds who have been brought up with "the world game" telling me that soccor should be the #1 code in the country just because it is played all over the world regardless of the actual contest .Just because the majority of us in Aus prefer AFL as our football code of choice ,does that make us behind the times ,just because we're different to the rest of the world? It does seem that way at times, particularly more prevalent when the world cup is on.

Sorry Jaworskyj, no actual offense was taken. I guess I was just feeling too cool to qualify my post with a smiley :)

I can't watch the World Cup on TV anyway, so I just put the Fifa live ticker website on, which is real annoying cause its extremely ruinous of computer resources.

But even though soccer does fairly little for me. I can still be rivetted even to a text live ticker!

Kind of a sports watching whore, here.

I don't think this World Cup has done much for the games popularity in this country. A stretcher for a blood nose? Give me a break.
