View Full Version : In your back pocket??
The whole back pocket arguement is getting out of hand. Should Slattery play? Sould Atkinson play? Should McVeigh play? Should Welsh return?
There is alot of unjustified man love for one (or more) of our BP Players, I want to know who people want to see play in the other Back Pocket to Fletcher??
Sorry People, instead of none it is ment to be Atkinson.

The "worth of Slattery" thread was just winding down.

I'm a big Hank fan, but I think in recent weeks McVeigh has really exceeded expectations and probably surpassed Slattery in that small back pocket role- at least for me.
I used to say that Slattery is one of the first selections in the team. He is disciplined, reliable, and almost invariably did the job that Knights set for him; to shut down his opponent.
However, I think Knights began to push for Slatts to attack more towards the end of last year. In periods he has done so successfully, but without consistency.
His injury opened the door for McVeigh, and unfortunately for Slatts, McVeigh just sets up our attack so much better. He has the ability to shut down players and his greatest asset is his fierce competitiveness, but he accentuates his value to our team with good disposal, an ability to collect himself and act rationally under pressure, and ultimately sets up many attacks.
Spike's value to our midfield, however, has been minimal since his run of great form in 2008. Knights clearly wants him in the side, and I think he is of greater use in the back pocket than anywhere else on the ground.
Nevertheless, I'm tipping Knights to pick another slow side with McVeigh, Welsh, Myers, Watson and Stanton to run through the midfield whilst Hank keeps his position down back. Would much rather an Atkinson in the side with one of those out, probably Welsh or Slattery in this discussion.

McVeigh = good football brain
Slattery = dumb football brain
McVeigh = polished skills
Slattery = poor skills
McVeigh = very good job in BP for 2010
Slattery = very ordinary job in BP for 2010
McVeigh = up to afl standard
Slattery = not up to afl standard.
....not a hard choice.

Back pockets seem to get cruisified no matter what they do.
If slattery gets towled up by betts or lecras then he cops it.
The thing I have noticed is that the next week betts and lecras will most
likely be towling up someone else.

Pretty simple.
Slattery and McVeigh are two great Back Pockets.
Slattery definitely plays better as a back pocket, and it is his only position really.
McVeigh would be better utilised in a HFF position.
Welsh isn't a back pocket.
