Something positive for a change. is it our midfield? Our tall defenders? The run off halfback? The way our forward line functions? Maybe something else entirely.

Small forwards, Davey, Zaha and Jetta have been super dangerous together.

without a doubt the strongest aspect of our side at the moment is our tackling pressure.
Being the top tackling team is a pretty good effort, particularly for a team that's game-plan allegedly lacks defense

If i was looking at competitive advantages compared to other sides i would be saying our ruck division. Ryder and Hille as a ruck duo is probably as good if not better than all the other teams with the possible exceptions of West Coast/Freo.
Our small forwards are quite good too, particularly because our KP forwards aren't physically developed enough to be really imposing so we rely on them to kick a large amount of our goals for us.
Other than that besides general pace across the ground and tackling pressure we don't really have any obvious strengths that stands out. Our KP's are talented but we need to get that translated into dominant performances for us we are still very much in the 'potential' stage. Hard to see where we are better than most other sides besides these areas.

What kept us in the game against the Hawks? Conversion rate from foward 50 entries ie our foward line was our strongest part! And some of those kicks into our foward 50 were ugly, unfortunately I still think our midfield is the weakest part but is steadily improveing as players like Zaka, Melksham and Jetta get there hands on the ball a bit more. Some might say that Watson is only now running into some top form whereas others might say that our midfield is making use of the ball he always worked so hard to get!
Sorry for going slightly off topic...

The high tackle count can also be attributed to not being first to the ball and thus having to tackle to get it.
I think a number of things have certainly been good this year. In no particular order:
- Ruck Division: Hille and Ryder have simply been dominant at times this year. Their ability to play on different opponents has been good with Ryder being able to play on the more nimble ruckmen, whilst Hille has been able to take on the more gorrilla like ruckmen. Yes they have been taken apart in some games this year, but overall they would be in the plus with the games one, the other or both have dominated.
- Small Forwards: Alwyn Davey has returned some blistering form since he was demoted, whilst Zaharakis has not been able to hit the scoreboard as much as he (and us) would of liked but has been in impressive form with his poise and class across half forward setting up many goal/score assists for us. Leroy has also been good since he has come into the side. Really shown me up a little bit, although I would think we could put him more into the 'midfield' group rather than the 'small forwards' group with him perhaps playing more so through the midfield?
The high tackle count can also be attributed to not being first to the ball and thus having to tackle to get it.
Not always, Collingwood are right up there and control the footy a lot, it's just something we're doing very well.

The strongest aspect of our side at the moment is that we can beat every team in the league; that's right. Every team. Don't say, "Oh, we can't beat Geelong, they're much too good!" because if you say that, you're wrong.
We could demolish every club each week we play, but we're simply just inconsistent. If we kept up our huge amounts of tackling pressure, our solid conversion rate in front of goal, our hard-ball winning, and our kicking it to Gumbleton, we'd be unstoppable.
But, the thing is, we can't. That's the problem with all clubs. Geelong and St Kilda both had to lose at least one game last year. Every team has their highs and lows, but unfortunately, Essendon have very rare high highs, and well, quite common low lows.
But never fear. Gumbleton is here!
There may be losses and there may be thrashings, but we still are one of the strongest sides in the competition.

Tackling pressure & contested footy about 10 of the 13 weeks.
If our forward line was *that* good, we would have capitalised with 6 or 8 wins.

Tackling is good and all, but it's not helping with defense.
We as a team, give up the second most inside 50s in the league- leading to having the 3rd most goals kicked against us. Sure, that number might be worse if we weren't tackling as much as we are- but truth be told, would defense is our biggest issue.
Comparing that to Geelong, who's attacking game plan I though we were moving towards, see's them sitting in 15th in the league for tackles. But there's probably a case there for the fact that they have the ball more than their opponent.
We leak the ball like a sieve- whether it's through poor skills, poor decisions, or a lack of defensive pressure when we turn it over entering our forward50, and until we get that addressed, we're not going anywhere.
That said, Paddy and Hille have been great.
I reckon a real strength is depth in KP stocks. Next is to get enough games into them all so they can flourish at this level. Hurley, Gumbleton, Hooker, Pears are the front runners obviously, and then there is the next batch in T Slattery, Carlisle, Still, Neagle, Daniher.
I guess the issue here is that we are trying to develop a first choice and backup spine at the same time which inevitably exposes the lads given their age, experience, physical maturity etc. Most KPs get their experience in the reserves or playing as a 3rd/4th option and don't get touched up as often. We don't have that luxury but in time they will come good and then our spine will be the envy of the league (that's the hope anyway).

Hille and Ryder have been pretty good after a slow start and TBC has filled in quite well. Jetta in career best form and Davey getting back to his 2007 form have been great. Our tackling pressue has probably been the stand out thus far.
