I didn't get the chance to watch much of Andrew Denton's interview with film star Jim Carrey on Monday night, but I did get a chance to read the transcript http://www.abc.net.au/enoughrope/stories/s880946.htm and after going over it, I can understand why the Herald Sun's Hit magazine bagged Denton over his interview.
The whole thing was a real missed opportunity. I like Carrey as an actor/comedian and have liked several of his films that he's made; he was potentially an interesting subject.
But Denton completely missed the opportunity. Incredibly, Carrey's film work was virtually ignored and instead we were subjected to Denton doing a Ray Martin and backslapping Carrey at every opportunity and trying to be the star of the show. Carrey's upbringing was discussed in detail, but it wasn't very interestingly done and was often just an excuse for Carrey to be self-indulgent and display his mannerisms.
As an interviewer, Denton is no Michael Parkinson, but at least he is better then Shaun Micaleff.
