Michael Collica is set to miss the West Coast Eagles’ round one match against Port Adelaide after undergoing arthroscopic surgery on his ankle on Friday.
Collica played in the WAFL last weekend with no problems, but felt something catch in his ankle at training during the week.
The rugged 25-year-old defender has played all 45 matches that West Coast has played since coming to the West from Hawthorn two seasons ago.
He is expected to be available for the club’s round two clash against the Hawks in Tasmania against his former club.

well that obviously didn't happen did it? so what happened to him! i want him back, he played all matches for us the previous two seasons and was 2nd in best & fairest in 2001. forget judd for a few secs (before naturally going back to him and branding his name everywhere possible), and bring back collica!
He is on the outer, no doubt. Hard to believe he was runner up in the best and fairest just 2 years ago.

I know, its pretty harsh IMO. They say he will be an option in the selectors head come round 2, yet he doesn't get a chance at all up to round 12 after not missing one game AT ALL in the previous two years. :(
green and morrison happened.

Green has been good and deserves his spot. Morrisson hasnt
Bring back Collica
Collica has hardly been setting the world on fire in the WAFL - Woosha has been rewarding those with good form, it's worked for us so far.

Obviously the ankle has troubled Collica more than we know. It's affected his match fitness and as a result he isnt showing the best of form in the WAFL. I want to see him back in the side soon, but only if his form and fitness warrant it. Im sure he'll be back once both are achieved.

My guess is that we decided to hang on to him just in case Morrison or Read had a relapse of their knee injuries and our young players didn't step up over the off season. With our young players taking the next step and Carroll helping to fill a void there is no position for him. He was only a stop gap who, along with the likes of Taylor and Merenda, was put in place whilst our young players developed and his role has been fulfilled.
To be delisted at the end of the year.

Carroll is not really in the equation as he takes taller players than Collica, who takes the mid-sized to small defenders.
Although Kasey Green has stepped it up, Wirra is playing well, Morrison (now injured) and Hunter havent exactly been setting the world on fire of late. If Collica were fit he'd be in the side for sure.

Collica was much more seriously injured than was first thought and has struggled since coming back, even at WAFL level. With the others going so well, he just hasn't had the opportunity. He should get another chance.

Just decided to hang on to him? He was one of our BEST defenders last season and was really good the year before. And as far as being a stop Gap i dont know many 23 years olds(as he was when we picked him up) who are taken as stop gaps. Merenda and Taylor were well and truly stop gaps, Collica was picked up for the future. When we were in doubt of who to play on a defender, we put Collica on him. He was smaller but played taller than he was and he did this very well. While his WAFL form hasnt been BRILLIANT neither has whoever has played on him in that particular game, infact hes pretty much blitzed MOST of his opponents from the games ive seen him play (2 live 2 on TV) just without getting a load of possies himself. And yes his Injury WAS worse than first thought. We may differ in opinon(i see him as a starting 22 player still) but why delist him? Even with a young side we need a few 26-28 year olds either in the side, or there as back up. Really dont see why we'd delist him.

On the other hand, a similar thing happened to Michael when Judge left Hawthorn - he went from being a first team regular and required player to a reserve - I don't think he played more than a game or two under Schwab.
Let's hope he isn't only a one coach player. I don't think so - he was good under Woosha last year.

Collica has to get a run - its virtually unheard of to hear a guy who was second B&F not be able to force he was into the team just 2 years later because of his form.
He could really add some class down back, and he is capable of taking a 3rd tall if we need him too.
