View Full Version : A Few Questions about the Board and the Selection Committee

Hi,
I have a couple of questions about the structure and processes at EFC. If anyone know some of the answers to these questions, I'd really appreciate it :thumbsu:. The intention of this OP is not to attack Knights (I'll leave that for other threads ;)), however I'm genuinely interested about how things work behind the scenes. Here goes:
What are the roles at the top of the club?
What are their names and who does what?
Which group of people appoints a coach (who appointed Knights)?
Has there been many changes in the organisation since Knights was appointed?
Who is on the gameday selection committee?
I heard Jobe sits in on the committee - is this true and how much weight would his opinion hold in selections, i.e. is he also accountable?
Why doesn't the selection committee explain its decisions to its members?

Top Personal at the club:
Directors (http://www.essendonfc.com.au/club/directors.asp): So we're talking Evans, Robson etc. Someone else can elaborate on their roles.
You would think that a number of the above people are involved in Knight's contract extension (http://www.essendonfc.com.au/news/news.asp?nid=7059). When he was first (http://www.essendonfc.com.au/news/news.asp?nid=5395) appointed coach, there was a different board headed by Jackson.
Changes since Knight's appointment:
As you can see, plenty of changes since Knights has come in. At the end of 2007, directors included: A. Epis, R. Gunston, P. Jackson, N. McKissock and B. Teal who are no longer at the club.
As for when Knights was appointed he brought his team of coaches. (http://www.essendonfc.com.au/team/coaches.asp)
GameDay Selection Committee:
I wouldn't know, but you could say that Knights and Watson are on it, and possibly some assistant coaches. I'm not sure how much weight each opinion holds. As for telling us about their selections, they'd wouldn't give much away except for saying Player X has showed some form in Bendigo or Player Y needs to freshen up, or Player Z needs to mature a bit.

The Selection Committee is Knights, the coaching panel, Paul Hamilton, Stuart McCormack and Kevin Egan.
Watson is consulted, but not a decision maker.

Cool thanks fellas.
So the Chairman of Selectors is Kevin Egan. I think it's only fair that if people criticise selections then Egan, Cormack, Hamilton and the coaching panel are all also blamed.

Yes, but Knights will end up copping the most for his Game-Day coaching style where it's up to him and assistant coaches.

Definitely. Not trying to take the heat off Knights - I'm bloody angry - but we need to look at the whole picture, and the selection committee shouldn't be exempt just because they're not the face of the gameday performance.

Egan is really only there because the club constitution requires a board member to perform the role of Chairman of Selections. Don't think he offers a lot.
McCorkmack is there as fitness coach to report on player conditioning, I think the Dr will also get involved for the same reason. Not sure we've had any issue with playing injured players too much this year.
Buck stops with Knights and to a lesser extent, Hamilton.

Fair enough. It would be interesting to know how the club views their roles on the committee. If Knights is indeed considered by the club to be chiefly responsible above Egan then I agree. It really depends on how much power Egan has. If he has the power to overrule Knights on selections then he needs to cop some flak, too.

Winderlich?

I did say too much.
Winderlich is the only example I can think of and I think he has to carry most of the blame because the issues he carries aren't easy to spot.
Stanton is an other, but his performances have mostly been pretty good.

Winderlich basically came out and said that he was declaring himself fit even when he wasn't.
Poor form from a senior player.

Fair call. It's the equivalent of lying on your resume for mine. Wasn't trying to blame the staff for Winderlich's inclusion tbh, but simply trying to remember if there were any injured players who've played this year. To the credit of the committee, at least they've got this part right.

I would like to present similar queries about the development team at the Bombers.
Who is in charge of player development?
Who is the strength and conditioning coach?
Is there a development KPI given to players and if so what does it involve?
I realise there is a large scruiteny on players bodies, health and fitness these days but there is clearly a lack of focus at the Bombers.
Not sure if this has been raised before but I'm trying to get clarification on who is responsible for our middle age group not fully developing, why Gumbleton didn't put a single muscle on his body in the 3 years out of the game, who made the call on reliving the veteran forwards when the replacements clearly hadn't developed?
Look at a team like Adelaide, they have a similar list of developing players and their bodies are far more developed than the Bombers. I look at this squad and it's obvious their bodies are not being developed for this game.
Thoughts?

His back injury didn't permit any heavy weights at all.
This coming pre-season will probably be spent in the gym.

Hi all, just letting you know that after last weekends game, I wrote Matthew knights an email.
I was not expecting a response, but within 24 hours I recieved an email from Ian Robson.
I addressed the email to the general email address, and was impressed with the personable service & accountability to the members shown by staff at efc. I would like knights to respond as it was more directed at him, not negative either, but impressed none the less

I also got a personal response from David Evans when I sent him an email earlier this year.
