Ok I need some ideas on what toys I can use to amuse my 10 week old doggy.
So far he's chowed into a few old slippers, a wooden doorstopper and he loves this battery operated moving ferret!
Any suggestions on what other things amuse dogs - let me know!
OK, There is this toy called a Kongo or something like that It's a chew toy that has a hole in the middle that gets smaller as it goes deeper into the toy. Anyway the idea is that you put something like vegemite or peanut butter in there and give it to the dog. They'll try to get the stuff from the back of the toy for hours and hours very good but also a little expensive.

Best investment I ever made was a "nylabone". This is a nylon bone that is impregnated with a flavour. You can put it in boiling water or the microwave every few months to bring back the taste and it never wars out, or at least 3 years which is as long as my dog has had his.
He chews it all the time, keeps his teeth clean and occupied.

You can put his dry food in it

I got a Beaglier (Beagle cross Cavalier King Charles) and he's a little cutie. He's actually asleep on my foot as I'm typing.
I purchased this rope/knot type thing and he seems to like that. I've also got this battery operated ferret thing which he loves. But he also seems to love nibbling at my feet which can get a little annoying at times

Dogs are like kids. Of all the toys my dog has lying around she will drop them all for an empty coke bottle.

This is a great tip for the summer, fill a coke bottle with water, bung it in the freezer overnight then leave it out for the dog during the day, the ice makes condensation which the dog licks off whilst chewing and chasing the bottle around the lawn and as he chews into the bottle it makes sure he gets cool water into him.
This also brought up one of lifes mysteries!! My Jack Russell manages to get the plastic top off all the time without breaking it and I can screw it back on afterwards!????

A mystery no more!
Jack Russells are actually little people in dog skins.

Chew toys are also very good as are rawhide bones.
Old socks are a good thing for dogs to have.
Are you thinking of training him?

How about some old shoes?

While dogs are smart I wouldn't be banking on them differentiating between old shoes and the $200 dollar brand spanking new pair of nikes.

Definately. He's too young right now (7 weeks old), but he will go Dog Training and I've already got him on a toilet training program.

This needs to be divided
Dog toys for companionable dogs, eg. Spaniels, Elkhounds, Golden Retreivers etc. The necessary toys have been mentioned.
Then dog toys for dangerous breeds, eg Rottweilers, mongrel Pit Bull types, Dogo Argentino's, Akita's, etc. The toys these breeds want are young children, people riding bikes, people walking other dogs, electricity meter readers, posties, water meter readers, etc.
The dangerous breeds wants this type of toy to satisfy its blood lust, its need to attack and kill, its desire to go for the throat and to rip at the throat, plus to shake & throw the victim into the air.
I like the companionable dogs
The dangerous breeds should be shot on sight, or at the very least, permanently muzzled, leashed and caged
coz kids and other people are far more important than a few ignorant, selfish, uncaring, irresponsible dangerous dog breed owners.

Our spaniel was given old shoes when he was a puppy and I was concerned that he might go after my Docs or something but actually he sticks with the ones he's been given, even if we just take our shoes off right in front of him. Same with socks.
He is easily amused though, give him a cardboard box (eg a cat food box, muesli bar box etc) and he's happy for hours tearing it apart on the floor!!!!!!! Does get messy but he loves it. :)
Of bought toys he has a LOT of balls. Mostly small ones but he does have a large one too (about the size of a basketball but those plastic bouncy ones, I'm sure you all know which ones I mean :p) and he loves that one because it's easier for him to play soccer with. We haven't spent a fortune on toys for him because he mostly discards them anyways for the boxes and stuff.

toilet training... ah... that was mummy's job *giggles* from what i remember it wasn't too bad, just like any normal dog...
thing you've gotta watch is the beagles go mental for sniffing... so be careful, VERY careful what you leave floating around... and i'm telling you doing the washing is gonna be killer for a few years... my puppy had a big thing for socks...
hope your pup gives you as much fun as mine...
*looks down at her fatty beagle taking up half her bed*
Asgardian you really need help, do you realise your dogs were bred for hunting, what if they mistake a child for game.
Anyway Go Eagles, back to your question, don't buy expensive toys, rope is great, plus tyres, Kenny has a wheelbarrow tyre, which is too big for your puppy, but go to the hardware store & buy a small tyre, they love chasing them & having tug of war with you & they last for ages.
NEVER give your dog old shoes, or buy those chewy treats shaped like shoes, that is asking for trouble, most dogs will not know the difference, so you will end up having your shoes demolished.
Toilet training, put newspaper down in the room closest to the back door, lots of paper to start with, then reducing the quantity, eventually put it outside the door, shouldn't take more than 2 weeks to house train your dog.

Beware of Squeaky Toys- my Labrador is scared of em. She gets used to them after a while {Doesnt run and hide after a while*}, but refuses to play with them.
Empty Coke Bottles- now they are good toys, Labrador loves em.
Small Wire Fences are always good fun- according to my Spaniel.
So is a game called "Bark At The Imaginary Possum Up The Tree Near My Crazy Neighbor"
My spaniel loves squeaky bones. Labrador only likes Rawhide Bones & Coke bottles, will on occasions go for tug toys if she is feeling like it- otherwise, she can always play with the spaniel.
Old teddy bears are good (not with beads/beans in though)
Go Roos
Tashi, how is your Springer going, hasn't jumped the neighbours back fence again. ;)

My Labrador was easy to toilet train although I get the feeling she was started before we got her. All we did was make sure we took her outside everytime she awoke from a nap, worked a treat. Now she will just walk to the door, sit and wait for you to open it.

Norwegian Elkhounds were not "bred" for any purpose Sandie, (BTW, you addressed me, so I may reply) Elkhounds are the same today, as they were over 4,000 years ago. They are recognised as one of the oldest pure breeds known to man. We know all of this because remains of these wonderful dogs have been found, together with their Viking masters, in ancient burial and village sites.
Elkhounds were used then, as they are today in the Artic regions, to guard the camps and the Vikings there, plus to guard various herd, and to hunt bear, elk plus wolves. This hunting style is worthwhile reviewing, the Elkhounds act in a pack style, when there are more than one dog available, chasing down the prey, then restricting the prey to a location by confrontation, aggressive behaviour, barking and howling. The hunter then arrives on the scene to dispatch the quarry, or whatever other plan there may be. As for mistaking a child for game, well I've never seen a kid that looks like a bear, elk or wolf. A Pit Bull though will attack anything that moves, which is mainly people in our community.
Elkhounds acting as a guard dog will apprehend, and confine a crook waiting for its master to arrive on the scene. The Elkhound is not a dog that automatically attacks. Elkhounds are a social canine, they love their family, and will protect them. They are not a "first strike" animal like your mongrel Sandie. Pit Bulls attack first, and continue with an attack, no matter what, because they are a vicious breed, AND ATTACKING IS WHAT THEY WERE BRED FOR.
Elkhounds have always been social canines, working with their masters, wanting to please, willing to defend
Pit Bulls are bred to attack, and kill, and they love doing it
Pit Bulls have no place in our society, they should be exterminated on sight.
BTW Sandie, I reject your notion of me needing help, after all, I know success, you cohabit with failure.
In future if you do not wish to hear from me, do not direct posts to my attention, I do not enjoy belittling you, it makes me feel unwashed, as if I've taken candy from a baby .

The dogs latest toy that he loves is an empty 1 litre cardboard box of milk. He loves to push it around the room and do the skids :D
Here's some 'toys' and other stuff I know certain breeds of dogs enjoy.
Chiwawas like small stuff, like thongs. Golf balls. Hopefully it'll choke it in, pesky little useless mutts. Same goes with Pomeranians and any other ankle biting mongrel half breed.
Bulldogs are really quite placid, and do **** all, sometimes they drag their arse along the carpet for a laugh.
Labradors like tennis balls, rope, shoes and anything else in your backyard you haven't bolted down
Pit Bulls enjoy 4 year old kids and grannies.

Old socks can do the trick for a while. My dog loves to play with socks and he is 9 years old. Very playful indeed.
