We seem to have a revolving door at selection at the moment, which can be taken as a good or a bad thing.
We ALSO seem to have a number of players that many fans would like to see string a few games together but don't seem to get much of a chance.
Whilst it's lunacy to make ten or twelve changes to a side (although, we were absolute GARBAGE last weekend.....) it got me to thinking, if I could pick the side from scratch for this week, knowing who is available - what would I come up with.
So here's my side. Those that absolutely have earned their spot, those that are doing a reasonable job, those that I would like to see play, and those that are in as a filler.
I'd be interested in the opinion of others on this...
B: Lovett-Murray, Hurley, Hocking
HB: Dempsey, Hooker, Welsh
C: Winderlich, Myers, Stanton
HF: Zaharakis, Gumbleton, Jetta
F: Davey, Neagle, Monfries
R: Ryder, Watson, Melksham
Int: Bellchambers, Quinn, T. Slattery, Colyer
Emg: Marigliani, Reimers, Prismall
Backs:
Hooker is a lock at the moment. He's been good consistently and shown a great deal of fight and spirit. I see no reason to remove him from the side. With Pears and Fletcher out of the side, I think we should move Hurley down back. He's a two time AA U18 down there and has looked damn good when he's been there. Those two as talls, and Lovett-Murray can act as your swingman (as he has). He also brings a level of maturity and leadership to the side.
Hocking has been great this year, really deserves his spot. Welsh has been servicable, is particularly useful at shutting down opposition midfielders. Dempsey is talented. I really want him in the side.
T. Slattery has had the one game, and for a first gamer I was very impressed. Give some games and let him make a go of it.
Centres:
Myers needs to be thrown into it. We've seen some good things from him when played midfield. He, like Neagle, needs a baptism of fire I think. Challenge him and see how he goes. Stanton, whilst not outstanding, has been reasonable enough to hold his place in the side, as has Winderlich. Watson is a star. Leads the competition in contested possessions, he just needs some assistance. Melksham, he's been good and I think we all want to see him get some more games.
Colyer fits right into our game style. The more game time we can get this speedster the better served we will be by it.
Prismall - frustrates me. Excellent kick, but his disposal efficiency.... get it together man!
And finally, Muscles listed as an emergency. If Myers doesn't shape up, then I would only be too glad to give him a crack at the big time.
Forwards:
Zaka has been quiet of late, but I think that may have more to do with the team performance as a whole. He's dangerous around goals and I would consider giving him a run in the middle. Gumby, lets just remember people that all we wanted from this kid was for him to string some games together. I'm happy to keep doing that for the rest of the year. Jetta and Davey have both been good this year as small forwards, and I think we are a more complete and dangerous side with them in the team. You also have the opportunity to play both as outside runners in the middle as the situation warrants. Monfries has become one of the better third talls in the game. When he's up and about the team is as well. Great on the lead and a good kick. Neagle, here's your last chance mate. String some games together, put in the effort and see if son of Merv can play at this level.
I also want to see Quinn get some more chances in and around the forward line. He's been ok in the VFL, and I don't want to crucify him for one game. Besides, who else is doing better? Give the kid a crack.
As for Reimers, I wouldn't have thought so long ago, but I only listed him because I didn't have a suitable replacement.
Rucks: Ryder is a no-brainer obviously, and Belly has been pretty good in the absence of Hille, though it would be tough to hold his spot when the big man returns.
-------
For those paying attention, if the team were named as above:
Ins: Colyer, Dempsey, Myers, Monfries, Neagle
Outs: H. Slattery, McVeigh, Prismall, Lonergan, Reimers
Comments and your opinons welcome :thumbsu:
