DELTA Goodrem mania is sweeping the nation.
After facing a crowd of teary, screaming teens in Sydney on Friday, the singer's following reached dizzying new heights in Melbourne on Saturday.
Goodrem signed autographs at Highpoint Shopping Centre for eight hours.
That's right – eight hours straight, from 1pm to 9pm.
It tops her previous signing record of six hours.
Organisers had set no time limit for the signing, but had no idea the crowd would be so huge.
A Sony publicist said the turn-up was mind-boggling and had propelled the Neighbours star into a new league.
"We knew it would be big, but it was just insane," the publicist said yesterday. "I've never seen anything like it, not even for an international act."
Goodrem refused to stop until she had met all her fans.
The singer was showered with all manner of gifts, including boxes of chocolates, flowers and even handmade Delta dolls.
Some keen fans even rode up and down the shopping centre's escalators trying to get a photo of their idol.
And a few were completely overwhelmed when they reached the front of the line and cried.
There were similar scenes in Sydney on Friday when Goodrem performed an eight-song concert for Channel V.
Hordes of screaming fans turned out, in a response usually reserved for male pop idols.
After the hysteria of the weekend, all eyes in the Delta camp will be firmly fixed today on the charts, with Goodrem vying for her third Australian No. 1 single.
Innocent Eyes debuted at No. 2 last week, behind Evanescence's smash hit, Bring Me to Life.
But if scenes like Saturday are any indication, she may just take top spot.
Goodrem is also expected to chart in the British top 10 today with Lost Without You.
The song was ranked No. 2 on Britain's mid-week charts, so her chances are looking good.
