View Full Version : TV Breaking the Magician's Code
I am very sure this TV show has been on air previously, maybe closer to the beginning of the century. Nobody in the newspapers seems to have mentioned this fact, which surprises me. Originally, the masked magician himself spoke as to how he did all the tricks and illusions and he had an American accent. This time, we have an Australian doing a voiceover, as well as making corny one liners in between explaining the process of how all the tricks are done. It sounds as though it's Grant Denyer. On the final episode of the original series, the masked magician explained why he decided to make such a show and go against the magician's code of never revealing how tricks are done. There must be other people who can remember this show being on before.

Yea they seem to rehash it every few years, but still hype it up as some brand new revelatory experience, despite it just being a differently edited version of something they've shown before. The first time I remember seeing it was in the mid-to-late '90s, when magic was really big, and David Copperfield and Siegfried & Roy regularly had television specials. I remember the magician's mask as being the same every time as well.

Ch 7 have ruined it by doing their own narration, instead of Mitch Pileggi.

Didn't Johnathan Frakes do one of the series?
Oh and by the way, the masked magician is this guy...

The worst part about 'Revealing Magic Secrets!' shows is they are rather pathetic. When the trick is revealed, the reaction tends to be 'Is that all????'.
Magic is about presentation, showmanship, entertainment (good looking chicks:D) - the actual mechanics are rather boring.
It hasn't been mentioned yet, but this is actually a new series (not the one from 5-10 years ago). It screened in the US last year but it's new to Australia AFAIK.

I haven't watched it, but to be honest. I don't want to know how they do all of the tricks. If I happen to watch a magician, I want to be entertained and if the illusion is part of it, then so be it.
James Randi who is a magician, or illusionist as he calls himself, did a great job of exposing Uri Geller a few years back by explaining how he achived his illusions. The difference there is that Geller was starting to explain that he had mystical powers and was claiming that he could help people using these powers. It was then that Randi decided to expose him by doing all of the same things and explaining how they were done.
Yup.
I don't like these sorts of shows for the most part, although there is something to be said for exposing old, stale illusions in order to keep the industry on their toes and constantly developing new material.
On the other hand I have nothing but respect for illusionists like Randi and Penn & Teller who go around exposing frauds who claim to have supernatural powers.

It's a frustrating show in that they spend so long explaining obvious stuff.
The entertaining part is trying to call how the trick is done and then seeing who is right.

Yeah, I watched it when it was first on. The voice over was much better then with the dude constantly remarking about the hot assistants.

This thread for some reason reminded me of this.

I see Channel 7 have put this show onto Seven2 for the past couple of Sunday evenings. They have also reverted back to the original American narration and ditched Denyer's dopey dialogue.
