View Full Version : Why we are on the right path

Although our season now is "over" i still believe we are on the right path to challenge for the premiership in a few years.

We have arguably the best stock of young KPP's or 'talls' in the AFL consisting of Pears, Hurley, Hooker, Gumbleton, Ryder, Daniher, Still, Bellchambers and Carlisle.

In the backline along with the KPP's (Pears and Hooker/Hurley) we have the great Dustin Fletcher (enough said) we have the run and of carry of
Dempsey who although has his negatives is still very young and hopefully should develop in to the Enright type of player.

Tyson Slattery although only watching one game looks like he can take over the Henry Slattery role in stopping the smaller forwards

Heath Hocking is the most improved player in my eyes in the Bombers outfit playing some great games against the Cats, Freo, Blues and the Saints and hopefully we will see even more improvement.

NLM has also had a much better season compared to last year, showing us that he has more to him then a regular backmen, playing in the midfield he tore teams apart with his ruthless aggression at the ball.

In the Forward line along with the KPP's (Gumbleton, Neagle ?)

Angus Monfries Who i think is a tad underrated has a great set of hands for a little fella, has a very good kick and can also put a good forward tag which we saw last year when he ripped Hodge to shreds.

Alwyn Davey When this player is on fire (which he has been the few weeks) he has tore teams apart with his dash and ability to kick a goal from anywhere and he has also improved a lot in his set shots.

Leroy Jetta A lot of people wrote him out of playing consistently but when put in the side he has played some great games his got pace to burn and loves to share the ball around the goals.

Mark Williams Since arriving he has been criticized a lot for not being able to be the player we all thought he'd be, i still think he has got the ability to be a vital piece into our forward line with his experience and skill.
When on song he is great we saw against Carlton when he was feeling coinfed he was kicking goals from anywhere and also i have heard that he is carrying an injury which is the reason why he hasn't been playing.

So we have a great young Forward and Back with midfield being our only issue, even though our Midfield has been criticized heaps i think we are on the right track to build it into something great with the likes of:

Watson: Enough said

Stanton: Who although has been criticized for his poor disposals he is still a vital asset in our team

Melksham: <3 i love and adore this player he has all the right tools to be an absolute gun for many years to come.

Colyer Often linked to the likes of Brent Harvey also looks like he has the tools to be a great player with his pace to burn, dash and ability to find the goals

Riemers If it wasn't for his injuries this player would have been a star, i love the way he goes about his footy with his grunt but can also back it up with his performances as we saw against the Blues in round 3

Zaharakis Another player which i love has been playing as a small forward but sooner or later will be put in the Midfield where he will shine with his disposal.

This young Midfield will shine with the likes of Patrick Ryder and David Hille in the ruck

So what I'd like to point out is that we have a great young side but we need some time to get games under their belts and when we do we will be absolutely unstoppable.

Great post - really needed to read something positive this morning. Can I just ask a question - how long do we consider players 'young'? I think of Melksham, Collyer, Pears as being young, but others like Dempsey should be becoming more consistent. What do you think?

Thanks, yeh i agree Dempsey although not very young like in the 18-20 bracket he is 23 and if you look at it from another perspective he has only played 42 games which means he is probably considered inexperienced.

Correct me if im wrong.

Any side can reel off names of kids that are doing well or look to have promise.

Richmond has a star in Reiwoldt already and gun mids in the making of Cotchin and Martin. Martin is so far ahead of anything we have it's not funny.

Melbourne have what we have + 5 or so others. Their backline is going well and they have top 2 mids in Scully and Trengove.

North - similar to us but with a group of kids also who are performing better at this stage. They have Hansen we have Gumbleton.

Adelaide - same as us but performing much much better. They have Dangerfield we have Myers.

Only side i'd be confident of overtaking in the next 3 years is Brisbane.

Why are we going to be better than every other side who can peel off similar names with similar numbers and automatically expect it's basically just time and number of games before we are a good side?

I'd say we have performed better than Richmond, Melbourne and North considering where we finished last year and where we look like ending up finishing this year.

We are the worst team in the league.

WCE and Port rightfully claim that title, we're next tier up.

out of all the players you mentioned, hurley and ryder are the only two that could become elite. pears will be good value but i don't see anyone else.

Not so sure, could be more than a couple of years until our next premiership window.

Will make a thread sometime in the next couple of days with my thoughts on 'the path' we're on at present, and what must change/continue.

We are severly let down by our players aged 23-30.

OUr young players are good and our future can be bright but we need to seriously get some quality mid 20 year olds to have them develop.

Although I seriously doubt whether Boak, Dangerfield etc etc would be interested in coming across now.

Would of been good to see Gumbleton marking on the lead from a Zaharakis kick, handball off to a running Colyer who kicks long to a one on one contest where Neagle out marks a struggling Melbourne defender..

Dare to dream?

Still think we're on the right path. Either umpiring goes 50/50 today or we kick straight and we win.

We didn't play that badly today.

Our defence was lacking in Fletcher and we were wholly inaccurate.

I do think we're on the right path.

We're just missing 2-3 good midfielders (different levels - one approaching A grade and 1-2 good solid AFL level players) and a few years of development.

Whether Knights is the man for the job remains to be seen, but he's got **** all cattle in the midfield right now.
