Not sure if it's been mentioned on this forum. But Hird mentioned on On The Couch that Sheedy spoke to the 22 premiership players from 2000 after the reunion and personally apologized for the first time to Heffernan, Blumfield, Caracella and Hardwick for having to get rid of them back in 2002. Hird mentioned that Sheedy got quite emotional while saying it. Good on him for being able to stand up for doing that, because that would have to be a bloody hard decision to make. Who knows what we could have done if we kept all those 4 guys.

They do deserve an apology, glad to see it came out.

What about an apology to the fans??

I was gutted the day Hardwick went to port.

Caracella was a gun, was never the same player when he left.

Blumfield got unlucky with injury, Heffernan in the same boat as caracella.

Blumfield was a star in the making.

Was unlucky not to win the Norm Smith in 2000, and was set for bigger and better things.

Then he was Richmondised.

Heffernan was merely a depth player. If he left the club on his own back then it would have made no difference at all. Losing Cara and Hardwick hurt a lot.

Depth player? Heff was a lock in our 22. Both he and Blumfield were chronically under rated. The loss of those 4 cost us another premiership.

Depth player.

I recall halfway through 2002, a girl I then worked with was good mates with Caracella's girlfriend and she told me then that Blake was going to Brisbane the following year.

I hoped it didn't happen and then it did.

So either Blake knew of the upcoming salary cap issues or he already wanted out. I remember reading about conflict between Blake and Sheeds...

Heff and Justin went on to do nothing whilst I feel the biggest loss was Hardwick. Was our heart and soul at the time..

Make no mistake - this was a seminal moment in our decline over the last decade. Hardwick was the icing on the cake.

Who is your fave now, so I can go to the tab and put 5 large on him to end up at Port Adeliade too?

Merrett and Hardwick were the two biggest mistakes of Sheedy's reign.3
When you thought of Essendon you thought of these blokes.

I reckon Blumfield and Heff were like some of the Eagles midfielders such as Braun, Embley, Fletcher. Good in a great team but just another player in an ordinary team. Heff was crap after he left Bombers and so was Blumfield. Injuries weren't the only excuse.

Haha I wish I could say Hank Slattery, Andrew Welsh, Mark McVeigh, Sam Lonergan, Michael Quinn, Jason Winderlich etc. etc.

I don't really have a fave at the moment but if I did... probably Zaka or for a bit of mongrel, Reimers.

I reckon Bellchambers/Gumbleton will be my faves in years to come - I hope I haven't put the Port kibosh on them!
