I've seen it before (plenty of times), but I'm watching it again tonight and every time I see it just reaffirms to me how good of a movie it really is.
For a movie that lasts 3 hours, and seemingly has alot of "junk" time in the movie, there really is no unnessecary scenes.
It is a simply amazing movie, and one of the most powerful movies one could ever hope to see. Tom Hanks is just superb, but the man who is awesome is the guy who plays Jon Coffey. I always forget his name, and right now I have a mental blank again. But how he didn't win an academy award for best supporting actor is beyond me.....
I'm pretty sure Michael Clarke Duncan (that's his name, innit?) did win said award. I may be wrong.

Nah he didn't.
Michael Caine won the Oscar in that category for 'The Cider House Rules.' It was in a very, very tough category that year off meomery. Tom Cruise for 'Magnolia', Michael Clarke Duncan for 'The Green Mile', Haley Joel Osment for 'The Sixth Sense' and Jude Law for 'The talented Mr Ripley.'
Wasn't exactly easy competition.

agreed it wasn't easy competition, but his performance in terms of supporting actor role, was probably close to, it not, the best performance in Hollywood history.
There's a pretty big plothole in the movie:
If Coffey could bring a mouse back from the dead, why couldn't he simply bring the murdered girls back from the dead? He had the power to ressurect... and the power to end up not going to jail.
Hmmm... or maybe the mouse wasn't dead? But I'm pretty sure it was.

First time i saw it i thought the first hour and a bit was excellent and then the whole getting rid of Tom Hanks urinating problem and blowing out flys from his mouth was just all a bit too damn wierd for me.
Then i watched it a second time and i thought it was excellent the whole way thru, made a bit more sense. Still a bit wierd tho. Awesome movie.
I love the way they make the big fella (dunno his name) look twice as big as he really is. I agree he should have won an oscar that year...one of the best acting performances ive seen. And the whole middle part of the movie with the Little rodent guard getting into plenty of crap, the new inmate that pi**ed on the guards leg, and then blew a moonpie in the other guards face was hilarious. Sad ending tho...brings a tear to your eye.
And yes - the big fella did say when all the hunting people found him that he tried to take it back but he couldnt do it. Made sense to me. The way i took it was that a mouse isnt all that big and that took a lot of energy out of him - as did fixing Hanks penis problem - so trying to get those 2 girls back to life was too difficult for him.
Great movie, great cast, great storyline.

Love it - Great movie, but it's too heavy for me to watch too often.

Cider House Rules is another fantastic movie. Michael Caine was superb in it.
As for The Green Mile, it's one of the best movies I've seen and Tom Hanks is, as usual, brilliant. Normally I find it difficult to sit still for longer than an hour, but this movie kept me riveted for 3 hours!
I'd recommend to anyone who hasn't seen either of these movies to get the DVD or video and watch them. Great movies with brilliant actors.

I saw it for the first time on TV and was blown away! I could not believe i was the only member (out of 5) of my family to watch it (the others wanted to see Charlie's Angels - now really! )
The performances in the film were brilliant and the scenes were beautifully shot. A fantastic film and something different from Stephen King.
Mr Jingles stole the show!:D

A great feel good movie. Even Hanks who im no fan of was really was great. Excellent cast, involving storyline, and characters that on the whole kept me there for the whole 3 hours.

Yea i was very surprised when I found out it was originally written by Steven King.
I actually watched it 2 or 3 times before I even noticed it in the credits

Fantastic film. Can't believe half a dozen fools rated it so low.
I gave it a 10. Like Bee, I find it VERY hard to sit through movies, the only long ones I have ever been able to sit through are 'Gone With The Wind' and 'The Green Mile'. It's a brilliant storyline, the cast put in fabulous performances and it just really makes you think and well it really moved me. :)

Who played Mr Jingles?!
There were some good characters- who was that guy with the longish hair, looked kind of Chinese- said in the cell before he visited Sparky he wished he could go back to the best time of his life or something.. what was his name? Didnt like him.

Tom Hanks was good.

I agree. I can't believe four people have rated it 1 out of 10!
I liked The Green Mile a fair bit and give it about 8 out 10, but for me I liked The Shawshank Redemption a hell of a lot more (even if the last 10-20 mins dragged on a bit).
Both made by the same director and in the same style but Tim Robbins and Morgan Freeman were great in TSR.
And without giving away anything for those who haven't seen it ... when watching it for the 1st time I NEVER seen the twist coming and 'til this day I still think it is one of the best disguised twists in a movie.

Hmmm... or maybe the mouse wasn't dead? But I'm pretty sure it was. I don't think that's a plot hole.
A mouse is very small, maybe 1000th the size of one of the girls. So assuming his Power had any basis in the physical universe, it follows that maybe he simply didn't have enough of said power to resurrect something the size of a 10ish year old girl.
p.s. Fantastic movie, one of my all-time faves. Can't think of a bad performance in it. I gave it a 9. I am reserving the 10 for maybe the best movie or two ever. Though this comes pretty close!

Tom Hanks was good.
He was an Indian chief.
There are only a few movies that I would give a ten to but this is one of them. The Shining and American Beauty would be the only other two I can think of at the moment.
Yep 10 out of 10, I love this movie, so much I asked for the DVD for my birthday pressie, can't believe people thought it wasn't typical Stephen King, I thought it was very typical, look ar the main character & his power.
