View Full Version : Toast Ben Howlett

Just finished watching the replay of the game on Friday night (I know, piss poor, but still got a replay of it :D)..

Ben Howlett would nearly get my three votes for the game, was the everywhere man on Friday night. Starting in the centre square (With Lonergan, Watson and ruckmen Ryder - WOW) he looked so comfortable playing a role that seems to have been reserved for Winderlich (on ball, run and gather kind of player?), but with Winderlich out, a position opened up on the ball, with Howlett slowly building progressively over the season, he has finally built up some kind of 'tank' to run out full AFL games on the ball and thus helped himself to the best game of his short career to date..

If I was doing brownlow votes, let me tell you, he would be getting some from me..

His ability to hunt the ball from the ruckmen's hands was class, his ability to keep his feet when digging for the ball stood out to me (too many times other players over the course of the season have gone to ground to easily - SEE TRAVIS COLYER also Friday night).. His tackling and pressure on the ball carrier was awesome.

I certainly think amongst all the negative criticism that our recruiting staff have copped from people around the traps for the past couple of years drafting, they should well and truly be given some credit for spotting and recruiting this guy that won the Peel Thunder B&F (Peel finished last but Howlett stood out like dog's balls in that team) last year..

His recruitment at the ripe pickings of # 30 in the 2009 Rookie draft was a stroke of genuis IMO..

Kudo's to the Essendon Recruiting Department for Ben Howlett :thumbsu:

Best game by a mile. Hasn't done anything wrong all year. This game has been building up for a long time. He will get even better with more game time and another pre season under his belt.

And they have paid the price once again for 'losing' a good young player to the AFL.
Wells, Ballantyne, Gumby etc

Thier worst season ever. Worst by a WAFL side ever. Belted by more that 100 points 7 times I think this season.

Spewing I didn't go see more PT games last year just to watch young Howlett.

A gem:thumbsu:

Pretty obvious to see someone's talent, even if they are on the losing side..

They might have been at a WAFL game to watch "player X", but took note's on "Player Y" because they did so well.

Ever tried recruiting? to try and spot some talent?

I often go out looking for talent of an evening... Sometimes I find it in bars, but sometimes I find it walking the streets.

And sometimes you just need to pay for it.

What are you talking about HFF? Me confused brother.

I'm just adding a side point about how Peel have produced a bunch of really good players over the last few years and how they have suffered badly from losing them to the big league..

I'm not bagging recruiters..

Sorry dude

Just pointing out that they (The Essendon Recruiting Department) did something right for once in picking up young Ben Howlett so late in the draft, in such a crap side too..

I'd never get to that stage.

It is hard to believe he is no longer in my uni classes. Great effort by anyone to get elevated from a rookie list let alone have an impact in the senior list of players. :thumbsu:

No worries at all my friend.

Yer, Peel will be lucky to be around in a couple of years if something doesn't change quickly. I live about 20 mins from the ground and coach a junior team in the Peel district and there are dozens of very good young players coming through the system that should keep the (Essendon) recruiters coming to Peel games for years to come. If they survive that is.

Millions are being spent as we speak on new facilities, grandstand etc..but all the new gym equipment in the world won't create a winning season if they don't have the experienced players to back the younger ones.

Danny Chartres is still there plugging away. Poor bugger.

They just can't attract any good players from any other WAFL clubs or get recruits from S.A or Vic to come and live and play in Mandurah.

I'd love to know who this recruiter is. Wonder if he lives local..?

Sounds way to familiar (Bendigo Bombers before 2010) even with Danny Chartres playing.. LOL.

You just need one good season, even average finals playing season for players to be attracted to the club..

Bendigo may become stronger again next year after the succesful advances they have made this year on field..

Just need to upgrade the s*** hole that is Queen Elizabeth Oval and we may be right to keep this alignement up, even with a reserves team..

Even if we delist some of the (senior) rookies, there is a chance that some would stay on.

I think someone like Marigliani is enjoying playing alongside some quality (AFL) players..

Add to that his association with Shagga (Former Frankston Dolphins Coach where Muscles played) and he may very well enjoy going around again..

Only down thing is, he lives like 3 hours away and at least 1.5 hours away from Windy Hill (he group up near me, was in his brothers year level, good bloke too), so that could be a detterent..

If we 'delist' him, I think he could be a potential mature age prospect at another club.

I have watched Ben's progress from junior football to his chance at Essendon, and am just glad that a club drafted him.

I have always been impressed by his football, and his dedication to training etc.

Loved his game on Friday night!:thumbsu:

Your club have a huge number of people from his hometown following your games since the start of this season. :)
