Don't know about number one contender, but a few names to throw in are the three D's.

DiCaprio
Depp
Damon (though he has one for writing)

Steve Buscemi wins this thread.
Really?

I love Buscemi, but there's no way I'd rate him ahead of legends like Mason, Fred Astaire, Gary Cooper, Greta Garbo, Kirk Douglas, Buster Keaton, Mae West, Rita Hayworth and James Dean, just to name a few.

I'm reluctant to name current actors anyway, because I'm pretty confident guys like Di Caprio and Depp will win before they finish.

Richard Burton, Cary Grant, Steve McQueen and Peter O'Toole are amongst the others who didn't win an award.

He's not even close to Cooper. Problem is, Cooper won 2 Best Actor Oscars.

If we're talking about pure talent here I might have to go with Ian McKellen. Got robbed by Roberto Begnini (although everyone tends to give Norton that year's award) and somehow not even nominated for Richard III.

Macy, Phoenix (both), Bening, Oldman and most of all Laura Linney deserve mentions.

Not actors, but both Hitchcock and Kubrick never winning for directing just shows how much of a joke the Oscars are

Glenn Close, Barbara Stanwyck and Johnny Depp are three fine actors/actresses that spring to mind. Also, I don't recall James Dean winning an Oscar, even though he only played the lead role in three feature films.

Doubt that he would care too much, but Buscemi & Depp indeed.

Clint Eastwood was not embraced by the Academy until Unforgiven. Takes a while for some. Pacino also had to wait for that kind of recognition, not getting an oscar for Scarface is downright hilarious.

Unfortunately Oscars history is littered with great actors winning Oscars for not-so-great roles, when they get deep into their careers and the Acadamy starts worrying they'll miss out.

Harrison Ford should not make any movies for like 5 years, then come back in a powerful old man role and get a token supporting actor oscar.

Pacino getting overlooked for Scarface was an utter joke....

Similar to De Niro missing out for Taxi Driver, Mickey Rourke missing out in The Wrester, Daniel Day Lewis missing out in Gangs of New York and don't even get me started on Martin Scorsese..

But I do like all the Buscemi love on here :thumbsu::thumbsu:

Are you guys serious with this Pacino/Scarface business. Even if he was nominated his performance doesn't touch Duvall's in Tender Mercies. And to compare it to the De Niro, Rourke and Day Lewis robberies . Pacino's Oscar should've come for The Godfather 2 or Dog Day Afternoon (although up against Nicholson).

Well he's got a role coming up as an old news anchor but the movie doesn't seem Oscary.

I should have made myself clearer, I was more upset about Pacino not even getting nominated, not him not winning..

And while we're on the subject of not being nominated, is it safe to say that Heat is the most snubbed movie of all time??

Yeah Kilmer was sensational in Tombstone..

I think part of the reasoning behind all the Scarface bashing is that the movie has not aged well.. It's extremely dated now and naturally doesn't get rated highly by those only now discovering it..

Robert De Niro in the Deer Hunter anyone?? Seemed to get lost in the shuffle when all the praise was going to Walken and Cazale..

(The thread seems to have gone off topic a bit. Apologies to the OP ;))

Yes it is. Mann's Collateral was also very much under-appreciated.

Yep, one of the great non-nominated performances.

Jon Voight has De Niro's Oscar for the Deer Hunter.

And no, Scarface hasn't aged well, but it was never a good film in the first place.

The Scarface baggers remind me when the critics panned it at the time it came out, mainly for the use of the F word, along with the the chainsaw scene (magnificently directed). No F-ing idea!

Pacino got the consolation prize for his hammy 'Scent Of A Woman' performance.

Along with BR regarding Judy Davis, Perth girl has a GG and been nominated for a few, but no osceegar.

Definitely. The chainsaw scene was the best part of Scarface, one of few highlights.

Not sure who won in his year, but Pacino would have been very deserving to have won supporting actor for the Godfather. **** he was stellar in that movie. Must have been a quality performance to outdo him. Good to see people have mentioned his efforts for leading actor in part two as well.

For the quality he's produced, Pacino could really have had more than one to his name, not that he'd complain.

Is The Departed Martin's best directed film? The directing is great, but it seems like an award given in fear of him not being nominated in the future. How on earth something like Raging Bull didn't win Best Director is beyond me.

Would of had it for Goodfellas if it weren't for Dances with Wolves, which is a terrific film. Could of gone either way back then, Goodfellas or Wolves.

Still at least Pesci got his ****ing Oscar. :thumbsu:
