I applaud Carlton for recruiting some young talent this year rather than other clubs rubbish but find it hard to understand why Harris isnt wearing a carlton jumper. He was taken at pick 14 by North and from what I have seen is a ready made senior player who can really play.A real hard worker in the Ratten mould who would have made a nice apprentice for Ratts or a replacement for Fraser Brown. He was from Bendigo way which is an old Carlton zone so I am surprised we overlooked him at pick 11 when we chose Trent Sporn. Sporn may turn out to be a champion but seems to be a fair way off making his senior debut.
I just have this feeling Sporn may turn out to be another Adam Chatfield..promising but not delivering in the short term.

Ah well, just another drop in the bucket of missed opportunities throughout the comp throughout history.

Sorry for the HUGE bump, but I just had to.
Harris is a very good player, imagine how good we would be with him in the midfield.
With Sporn now gone, and Livo well and truly on the outer, this stuff reall hurts.

haha, dont worry about Harris at pick 14, Shaun Burgoyne went at pick 12... and Daniel Kerr went at 18, when we picked up Wiggins at 15

haha always going to be good selections that we cant all pick - but his some embarrasing facts of why we HAVE been in such a bad state.
1998 - pick 6, we selected Murray Vance... J Carr 7, J Bolton 8, Hayes 11
1999 - Had pick 31 (CHAPMAN) on traded for Mick Mansfield!!
- Also had picks 16 and 46 given for O ' Reilly!!! even at 46 Enright and Batemen were still avaialable
2000 - Sam Crange for Aaron Hamill debactle
- but hey we had picks 4, 11 & 15 in a draft S Burgoyne went 12, Harris 14 and D. KERR goes 18. we pick Livingstone, Sporn and Wiggins!
2001 - Massie and Nelson for gallagher and eccles (they dont even deserve caps)
- Gave kangas picks 14 and 30 for Mckernan
Now to Rebuild....
2002 - Picked up Mick Martyn
2003 - Picked up Loats, Hardford and Johnson from Hawks: Teague & Morell (kangas), Clarke (geelong) Mcgrath and Bannister (Dons)

I notice that your list stops at 2003 which means that we have learned our lesson and fixed the problem?

2004 - Chambers and longmuir picked up for draft picks... after declaring we were rebuilding.
Nah i actually agree with you as0l0, we have learnt our lesson - we havnt just thrown away draft picks of late and tried for the quick fix. I was just pointing out we have made some very bad choices over the past decade and as a result we are where we r now. Goddard and Wells wouldnt change it all that much unfortunately.
Also cant really asses the 04 draft picks, they havnt had time to develop (russell, Hartlerr, Raso, etc)
Just thought id point out everything in one post, rather than have everyone here post there own favourite mistake, lol.
08 - finals!

Simpson - Harris - Walker

What a midfield that would be.

Fair call by Sticks, but hindsight is a wonderful thing. IIRC, Dylan Smith was taken before Harris at #6, so you can see there that drafting is no way an exact science.

Goddard is better than the inconsistent Wells and has more of what we need ATM.

No mention of the drafting of Simpson & Fisher with late picks in 2002 and Loats was never on Carlton's list. He actually went to Geelong. I get your point, though, and I am the first to criticise the club for their poor recruiting from 1997 - 2003. One of the main reason's we have struggled for so long.

Suprisingly i didnt mention the great picks of simpson and fisher with late picks whilst trying to point out how bad a position we are in.
Didnt mention getting Fevola at 38 either, or Houlihan in the 70's. Not saying we havnt had our good picks - just that we have wasted numerous opurtunities between 98 and 03 to pick up good solid youngsters.
