According to the Essondon website (http://www.essendonfc.com.au/news/news.asp?nid=7706), we're wearing seat belts this weekend.
Not sure about this one - great cause, but surely there's another way.
Apparently (http://www.theage.com.au/afl/afl-news/dons-to-wear-seatbelt-jumper-after-hilles-plea-20100802-113c9.html) we've agreed to come up with a real clash strip in order to be allowed to wear this. Not really happy about that.
If we have to cheapen our brand by destroying one of the (or is it just "the") oldest continuously worn strips in sport anywhere, at least it's being done for a worthy cause.

I can just imagine the headlines now after we cop a flogging from the pies wearing out seatbelt jumper......

Am I the only one who doesn't give a f**king rats tossbag what jumper we wear.
The boys could wear a pink jumper and a netball skirt as far as I'm concerned so long as it doesn't hinder their performance on the field.
And all evidence would show that it poses no hinderance at all.

Very poor form by the club- whilst the idea behind it is good (although they are getting paid half a million dollars- they have effectively got rid of our historical jumper under the guise of a good cause. Bullshit. Do it for free then if it is so important.
Over time we've:
Gone from navy blue with a red sash to black with a red sash but it's still the EFC.
Expanded the sash but it's still the EFC.
We've moved from Flemington Hill to East Melbourne, back to Windy Hill and likely to the Essendon Airport, but it's still the EFC.
Changed from playing home games at the aforementioned grounds to the MCG to Etihad but it is still the EFC.
I think you get my drift
I really don't give a crap if we have a clash strip. If it is a club endorsed guernsy (which it will have to be) then it is representing the Essendon Football Club. That's enough for me.
The fact we are wearing the seatbelt strip for a great cause shows the respect the EFC was for the wider community. We are always on board to promote good causes and this is yet another.

Its a buckle at the bottom of the existing red sash - Who bloody cares??????
There are more pressing issues at our club than to be worrying about this shite.
Where did this half a million dollar figure come from anyway?

I read the half a million in a article recently about this. We are getting a lot of money for this. What other issues are more pressing then preserving the brand of the EFC? The current board seems to care about money a bit too much- why else do we have such an underresourced department in football spending when we are one of the most richest? why else do we have one of the shittest facilities in the league (thankfully now that Robson is here this will actually be addressed.
My main concern is the club has backflipped over its stance on a clash jumper- for the past few years they stated our constitution will not allow it etc. and now throw a bit of money and voila new jumper.
I support the cause but not the way they went about it.
So is Hille playing or out with a suspension?

So no source for the half a million then.
Organisations are allowed to change their mind. There's a new CEO, new President - are we beholden for eternity to decisions or statements past management have made.
And I'd hazard a guess that they've sniffed around and sussed out that nobody really cares about having another jumper anyway.
I think the jumper looks great. Great cause. Great design. Good cricket all round.

Agree.
I'm actually hoping the club are forward thinking enough to create a clash guernsey and get some publicity and money.

meh, looks good, good cause.
Don't care bout the clash guernsey, just hope they make it look really good too.
To be honest i think we have the best jumper in the league!
Always loved the black with the red strip. Simple and classy.
And don't forget the black is very slimming on our boys ;)

Not sure the boys really need to wear it in the game, maybe just at some promotional thing would have been better, but i'm not that worries since it's for a good cause.
Like a lot of you have said, we have bigger things to worry about than this
So is Hille playing or out with a suspension?
Reprimand, again:D
Some pics of the jumper.

My only issue, the seat belt on the jumper is unbuckled, perhaps a portent to our game plan on Friday night. :(

We may just have to wear it in a grand final.
If it were not for Essendon being solely red and black, I most likely would have ended up a saints fan like my dad. He tried to buy me a saints beanie when I was around 2, but I wouldn't be in it. Instead I wanted the Essendon one. Had clash kits been around back then, who knows what might have happened.
You want to potentially consign future generations of children to lifetimes of misery, just so the St Kilda football club don't have to wear white shorts for a home game?
Why should the home team have to change their uniform for our fans?

Geelong do it. The AFL deem jumpers to be either dark or light. St Kilda's jumper could be deemed to be light, as it has white down the center and red (which is considered neutral) on the side. Given that Essendon's strip is dark, St Kilda's white, they wear white shorts.
Its not as if we are making them change into something that they don't normally wear, which is what is being expected of us. To sell merchandise.

Imagine being a saints fan and the only pic you've got of your team winning a flag has the skipper in a Collingwood jumper. Imagine being an old timer showing that picture to your kids imploring them to follow your team. I reckon they'd be more likely to follow Collingwood.
In fact, maybe that old tradition is the reason there are so many Collingwood fans?
So when we win a flag in a red white and black number (it will most likely be), or red silver and black, Kids are gonna latch onto St Kilda or Melb.

You think all you'll have of the season is a faded newspaper photo? Yeah, I don't think so

Or we could just accept the rules handed down and wear a light strip for two-three games a season

Which would mean fundamentally changing our uniform, when there should be no need. Geelong can do it for Collingwood, St Kilda should just continue to follow suit.
And what about Melbourne?

10 Aug 2010, 17:58
And what about Melbourne?
Away team to wear white shorts should just about cover it. Never had trouble in 2000 grand final telling who was who. And the other team that Sh!ts me is Gold Coast. Hate to tread on their prestigious history by wearing our 138 year old jumper.

you have your opinion mantis, others have theirs. Fair enough, yes?
The cause is great and we are being joined in it by Bendigo, Coburg, Melbourne Victory and all of the TAC Cup sides so you would hope that such a message would get across.
As for clash strips, without wanting to re-open old and divisive wounds, the AFL have ultimately given us no choice in the matter - I still have a copy of the consititution that all the members decided on in 1998. Nowhere in it does it say that we must wear a jumper that has a red sash on a black jumper - it just states that our colours will be red and black. No white either.
So the solution for me is simple - a red jumper with a black sash and RED shorts. Throw in a panel on the back of the jumper in red with black numbering (and for our normal jumper being a black panel with red numbering). It's simple and would achieve what the AFL wants us to come up with.
Sadly, it would seem some people are scared of change.

LOL are you for real? Who gives a ****. If you won a flag you'll be loving life. I couldnt care less if Port won the flag in that all-teal training jumper we wore against Collingwood in 03. Look at Chelsea and Man Utd (two of the world's biggest clubs), they wear different colours, infact Chelsea won their FA Cup in 09 in a yellow shirt!

Taking money to alter our jumper. WTF happened to this club. Seriously. If we wanna help out the TAC, great, fantastic. Appear in ads. Do whatever we can. But whatever happened to respect for the jumper. For over 100 years we wore a black jumper with a red sash, nothing more. Now at the sight of some cash we've changed it.
Pathetic.

Completely agree. The greatest sporting clubs in the world (ie. Man U, Liverpool, Barcelona etc. have clash jumpers, what makes us bigger than them?
If we have an inverted clash strip, all white, pink whatever. I don't care. It's not going to stop me supporting Essendon and I don't see how it'll affect people's view of the club.

You better hope your seatbelt is done up or you'll be flying out the front window down to Tasmania in your next car accident.

It actually works both ways. I support Newcastle United and there would be no way I would wear the black and white striped shirt because of what it represents in Australia. Lucky there are 2nd and 3rd kits which are totally different to the original one which I am usually happy to purchase and wear.

Constant jumper changes are just another of the reasons I can never really get into that sport. They play in the league, they play in the other league, they play in this cup and for that shield. They win, they draw, they lose who gives a toss. Its all so diluted.
