Probably not an actress well-known around these parts, but for those who follow classic film, yet another sad loss as more of our greats leave us.
Neal appeared in films such as The Day the Earth Stood, The FountainHead, Bright Leaf, Breakfast at Tiffany's and of course, Hud, in which she won the Academy Award for Best Actress.
She wasn't a bona fide 'screen goddess' in the form of Rita Hayworth, Lana Turner or Natalie Wood, yet she projected a sultry easy-going sexiness that was a joy to watch.
I will always remember her as Alma Brown in Hud opposite Paul Newman as the title character. Being a long time admirer of Paul Newman's work, watching their sly, flirtatious banter is just incredible to watch. It is done with such marvellous subtlety, yet hits like a sledgehammer...the way acting should be.
