View Full Version : Things you hate about the TV networks...

Here's one that could turn into a very long thread...
One of my pet hates is when TV networks try and 'tease' you by showing bits off an upcoming series with the words 'coming soon' at the bottom. It s hits me how they will not say WHEN the series is starting. If they think that by doing this they will build up suspense and anticipation, they're sadly mistaken. Personally I find it irritating and half the time can't be arsed with the show by the time it comes round. If they would just say when it's starting, I would probably make a mental note to watch.
Oh, and another one is when a network acquires the latest season of a popular show, and intersperse it with 'classic' episodes (repeats). I heard this beautifully described as being like "a spoilt child who won't share his sweets". What are your pet hates?
cross promotion of networks shows
(e.g. having guests of a struggling or new series on a talkshow to beat it up)
lifestyle shows also have alot of crossover, or combined multi-show efforts.
Seven and Nine are especially guility of both these things.
Also Channel Seven putting there own network logo thingy at the start of every commerical break promoting the show is painful.
Something I've noticed whilst watching 24 regularly (probably the only series I bother myself with), in the ads I notice that every other series, Blue Heelers, The Practice, All-Saints and anything else has "a episode you absolutely can't miss" every week. Someone's dying, getting fired, whatever... Such marketing has the opposite effect on me.
i agree about the coming soon thing. i was starting to get interested into that jamie's kitchen show but for about 3 weeks they've had coming soon on the ads. sick of it.
networks cancelling shows mid-season.
big brother all the bloody time on channel 10.
rove is a big culprit on this one too, not that i watch rove anymore. say a big star was due to come on the show, the sort of star that a lot of people would tune in to see, right at the start he'd say 'coming up very soon', then before every single ad break he'd say 'coming up next' before their appearance during the closing credits for about 10 seconds.

Programmers who seem to think a loyal audience means you can **** around with the programming of a show at will because we'll still watch it, no matter what craphole timeslot you dump it in or what weeks you decide to not show it at all because we've got an extra long special on the growing of grass that somehow deserves precedence.
Yes, Channel Nine, THIS MEANS YOU.
(Sopranos, West Wing, Six Feet Under, Star Trek...)
i hate it when networks just carbon copy ideas from overseas network and do a ****ty australian production here, they don't bloody sit down and come up with something new of our own, they are slack bastards.
I hate Ch.10 for making those Australian Idol commercials. The one with Marcia Hines in particular.
When she says, "and this amazing voice comes out.." with a (bad actor) face like she's in awe and wonder especially annoys me. (Damn that American accent!!) For most of the commercial, they do a mega close-up of her face and you can see her huge bug eyes. And to top it all off, at the end of the commercial, she has her head tilted to the side like a model posing for the camera. Urgh!
:o
My hate list:
Watermark logos in the corner of the screen. The WIN-TV logo is huge compared to the other networks.
Shows not starting or finishing at scheduled times. The last few Grands Prix have started 15 minutes late on Channel 10 because Big Brother ran over time. This can be a real pain if you've set the video to tape a show and miss the end.
The split screen they often use to promote next week's movie during the closing credits of the film you've just watched. Very annoying if you want to read the credits to see who played one of the characters.
NSW Lotto results are shown at the bottom of the screen on Monday night, blocking out the answers on Who Wants To Be A Mollionaire?
Repeated repeats. Channel 10 are the worst for this. Episodes of Sienfeld, Everybody Loves Raymond and yes, even The Simpsons are funny the first couple of times but no joke is funny when you've heard the punchline many times before.
Channel 7 also rate a mention here for Get Smart and M*A*S*H.

Yep - this is something that really p*sses me off. Moving time slots, dropping in repeats, taking the show off with no warning, etc etc.
The logo in the bottom right hand corner of every show (yes Ch 7, that ****s me)
Secondly, is when they finally get the show you want started, and the music and introduction blah blah is complete, then, instead of starting the show, they go to an ad break!!
Whats with that? You've done the intro and everything, whats the ad for? Just start the bloody show!!

Hear hear. Her and all the other Australian female comedians. Like that one who's on the soup ads...
They're all as funny as cancer.
I hate it when American shows do a crossover but the shows are on different networks here. One example is Law & Order and Homicide : Life On The Streets .They did a part 1 on L&O and Part 2 on Homicide. The problem was that ch7 dumped Homicide and I had to wait 4 years to see part 2 when Foxtel showed the final season of Homicide a few months ago.

When the tv networks turn the volume up during comercials... and you have to turn it down, then turn it back up for the show... and so on.

When the TV station presumes that every freakin' person in the country has a mega, super-dooper, wide-screen TV. They decide to move the little cricket or footy scoreboard (The one in the top left hand corner) a little bit further across. This sh*ts me because people like me who only have old-school tv's cannot see the all important first number in the score!!

Crappy voiceovers that interrupt the closure of credits. Especially when accompanied with splitscreens so that you can't even read the credits any more.
Wogs. Wog comedy is neither funny nor topical any more. Please stop it. Thank you.

a whole solid month of buffy repeats that don't even really have any bearing on what is currently happening (or supposed to be if we ever got to see it!)! And moving futurama to such a dodgy timeslot or forgetting to shcedule it altogether!
Also, I know live TV shows can be entertaining but ffs! Keep it to your timeslots people! I know when that lovely short-lived piece of junk before buffy was on at the start of this year not one buffy episode started on time when it ran so i missed starts, ends and an entire episode because i could never get the times right to set the vcr!
And late night TV - some of us actually don't mind some of the stuff you put on then, so PLEASE if you put it in the schedule, LEAVE IT THERE! So many times I'll tape a show and then go to watch it later and find i got something totally different to what was scheduled!
And what's with finishing "seasons" of shows in the middle! What's with that?! Gilmore girls ends after about 10eps instead of the shceduled 22 in the States! And they've just completely forgotten the last half of Boston Public, and what they did show was out of order, and as a result really didn't flow so well over what we did see.
And treating people like garbage when they ring up to ask "what's happened to this show?" is just not on - you get away with it because there's so little competition really, but in other industries, that sort of response would have you out on your backside in a second!
Hmmm... didn't realise so many things really did annoy me about TV even though i do like it quite a bit sometimes! Take that you annoying corprate-driven, money-grabbing TV stations!

Totally agree. Both are as funny, if not funnier than their sister show The Simpsons.

pretty much everything about tv.
radio is 1000000000000000000 times better.
The fact that the stations (mainly channel ten and 7) but the same bloody movies on every 2 months. This will be like the 3rd time channel ten will be showing the mummy in like 4 months. They obviously are struggling.

And market it as a kids movie like last time!!
I couldn't believe it - they did the same with Billy Madison. Put it in the 7:30pm timeslot here in Adelaide and advertised them with the kiddy actors featured heavily like it was G-rated. I didn't watch either of them because I've seen both 1000 times but they would've had to have taken the scissors to it in regards to language/violence/sexual references.
Bizarre.

Shameless cross-promotion of other shows in the network stable.
Split screen credits with accompanying voice over.
Saccharine news services.
Weather men (it's a male thing) who take themselves so seriously.
Any current affairs show with the exception of Nine's Sunday program.
Ken Sutcliffe.

Rove McManus should be shot repeatedly with a high-powered, semi-automatic assault rifle. Am I alone in detesting this guy?
