JAMES Hird says he won't coach in the AFL for at least the next three years and doubts he might ever make the move.
In a stunning development yesterday in Essendon's coaching crisis, Hird told the Herald Sun: "I won't be coaching in the next three to five years, and that might mean I never do."

Doesn't mean Knights will retain his job next year.

I don't think he'll ever coach tbh. The only way i see him coaching is when his sons are about to come of age.

Damn!!!!!!! Knights would be the only one happy reading this.

This is the second time imbeciles on our board have been saved from themselves.

In 2007 we panicked and sacked Sheedy for the wrong reasons (it was the end we had to have but it doesn't excuse the manner in which it happened) and chased Voss. Voss was a guy with no coaching credentials and would have been a foolish appointment.

Three years later a former club great declares interest in a job and the club allows itself to be thrown into disarray because we are again chasing a big name. For the second time the coach we are chasing has no coaching credentials and is simply a romance story.

Who are the idiots elected to our board? Are they successful in business because of blind luck?

It is alarming that our boards approach to the coaching position at Essendon is no more informed than the plebs in the stands.

We have become Richmond. It is disgusting.

Hirdy botched this up a bit in the media this week. It got out of hand and he has had to slam on the brakes. Now it looks unlikely he will coach ever. Because in another 3 -5 years with his business interests and media work he would have been out of the loop for too long IMO. He won't accept an assistant role in 3 to 5 years, play apprentice for 2-3 more years and then go into senior coaching. I think now it's a lost opportunity.

Meanwhile, Matthew Knights, you are far from safe.

Ron Evans left some big shoes to fill, maybe son of Evans is not up to it?

Well it's disappointing but not at all surprising.

If Knights is there in 2011, I'm going to seriously consider renewing my membership or not. I'm just being honest.

He got the job because our club's administrators are cheapskates.

Really? I'd renew my membership no matter who the coach was.

To my knowledge Knights election of coach was more a " best of a bad bunch" after first in line Damien Hardwick was sabotaged by Hawthorn who didnt release his powerpoint presentation to be used in time for his meeting with the board, and Gary O'Donnell pulled out at the last minute leaving Knights the only reasonable choice.
Now however there is Mark Williams available, and after knowing Dave Evans for a couple of years now im almost certain he will not put of with mediocrity and there will be a change in the near future.
I am possitive 'son of evans' will be more than up to it.

This really shows that Hird does need some sort of 'apprenticeship' if he ever wants to coach. Poorly handled. Great player but not as intelligent as everyone makes out. Naive in a lot of ways.

I'd give Knights another year. If not I don't really care if he gets the arse now.

Laidley as a match day coach only and Williams overseeing the whole thing as 'Manager'.

Rumour going around,

Hird is one of the two applicants for the PAFC 2011 Coaching job that the Media are unaware of.

Definetly eh.

Mark Williams it must be then because we're not going to risk taking on another inexperienced coach.

I'm betting Knights will be there next year with Mark Williams as either director of coaching or as an assistant.

Hird should be encouraged to take up an assistant role to gain some experience.

It's untenable. Not sure if you've been listening to the radio airwaves over the past few weeks but Essendon supporters don't want Knights... yes, I realise that the tail shouldn't wag the dog but Knights in 3 years has a winning record of 37.9% with only Hardwicke and Bailey behind him. One of those coaches was tanking and the other coach has a handful of young gun midfielders at his disposal thus a bright future. We're in the same position as we were in 2007.

Who's your choice then Donners????

Because unless the board get lucky and find some one that at least 50% of supporters are happy with then we'll have the same unstable situation for another 3 years.

Of the coaches available - Chris Scott. More often than not a tough player makes a good coach, they get the best out of their players. Knights was a soft player, he's a poor coach and he's also poor with man management.

Scott has also tasted success as a player, not that that is paramount, and I believe he's extremely well respected amongst the coaching fraternity.

We missed out on Hardwick, I hope we don't miss out on Scott.
