View Full Version : Colin Croft incident

A few nights ago I saw highlights of Windies v NZ from 1980 on ESPN. During the match Colin Croft had a "physical" confrontation with NZ umpire Fred Goddard. (He "bumped" into him during his delivery stride) I am just wondering if Croft was suspended for this incident as it looked very, very, delibarate. Also, how long would he have been suspended had it happened in todays cricket, not only that, what would have happened if it was Glen McGrath who has a very poor disciplinary record.
2 other things I noticed were the Windies poor behaviour (just to prove its not just the Aussies who show dissent when things dont go their way) which under a strong disciplinarian such as Clive Lloyd I found surprising as well as that series was the last the Windies lost until Australia beat them in 1995.
I don't know what happened to Colin Croft but I'm pretty sure that his disciplinary record would ahve been as bad as McGraths (although they didn't have match referees in those days), he was one of the nastiests fast bowlers to play Test cricket, a real angry man.
I think he had one spell bowling to Geoff Boycott where 11 out of 14 deliveries where bouncers.
There's another incident that always make me chuckle from that era involving the Windies in Paksitan when Sylvester Clarke knocks out a spectator with a brick because they'd been throwing stuff at him.
I'm not sure but I think there may have been a riot as a result of it.:D

The reason why the Windies behaviour was particularly poor in this series (generally it was pretty good) was that they were coming off WSC where they were treated like royalty and it was quite a come down to the rather drab confines of NZ cricket. That they were up against a surprisingly strong NZ lineup was something they didn't take too kindly to, and the umpiring levels weren't particularly highly rated by the team.

The last season of WSC was 1978-79.
The 1979-80 series (Aust v Eng for 3 and then WI for 3) was back under the control of the ACB.

Who would thunk it? Bad behaviour on a cricket field before this current Australian side, no way!!!!!
