Allegedly will launch during September and will be a crime and movie based channel, targeted at the 40+ female demographic.

Article hints that either Gem or GO! will be upgraded to HD, although why they don't broadcast their main channel in HD has me befuddled.
The upcoming Ashes series better be in ****ing HD.

This third channel has to be in HD under the current licencing laws, as they can only own one HD and two SD channels, one of which has to be the main channel.
I find HD to be somewhat overrated.
New channel sounds pretty lame. When I read 'crime and movie' I was thinking huzzah, but 40+? Sounds like a FTA version of Oxygen.

I was thinking FTA version of Foxtel's W channel.

Buck, I'm pretty sure Channel 9 is in HD.
What an age we live in, btw. . . no need for foxtel anymore.

Nine currently broadcasts their main channel in both SD and HD, but when Gem starts they will not be able to do this.
Bummer, 40+ women, but I suppose it was to be expected after all of them have announced there youth channels.

Yep.
Once commercial networks get their third channel they can't broadcast their main channel in HD anymore.

Confirmed (http://www.tvtonight.com.au/2010/09/nine-to-launch-gem-for-women.html)
Nine’s third digital channel GEM will aim at women over 35.
As an acronym of General Entertainment and Movies, GEM will feature shows such as Weeds, The Secret Millionaire, Random Acts of Kindness, The Big C starring Laura Linney and Wife Swap.
CEO David Gyngell, told the Australian Financial Review, “GEM is part of Nine’s strategy to create a cluster of complementary channels to cover all key audiences… [GEM] will be a warm and classy channel.”
As with 7mate, the channel is set to be HD only, to replace Nine HD.
Some News and Current Affairs and a “reworked” version of 60 Minutes will feature as well as some sports, including Cricket and Rugby League, as part of the network’s high-definition sports quota.

I love how they could have Wife Swap and Classy in the same paragraph.
